CERC to review tariff norms for biomass plants With a number of biomass plants getting closed in Punjab, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh, CERC on MNRE's request has decided to review the tariff guidelines for biomass power plants. India has the potential to generate 17,000 MW from agriculture biomass, but so far only 2,300 MW has been harnessed. These plants use agriculture and forest residues as fuel. PSERC issues orders on cross subsidy charges Punjab State Electricity Regulatory Commission's (PSERC) has notified regulations on open access. As per the regulations, consumers are required to pay a cross subsidy surcharge from July 1, 2011. PSERC has also levied wheeling charges on open access consumers at 17.4 paise per unit for 33/66 kV and 34.8 paise per unit for 11 kV. The move is aimed to prevent financial loss to Punjab State Power Corporation Limited due to migration of industrial consumers. The policy envisages setting up hydro projects from 2-100 MW, with higher preference to projects up to 10 MW. Further, no independent power producer will be awarded more than three projects or projects aggregating over 200 MW, whichever is higher. The policy is expected to attract investments in the state which has huge hydro potential owing to the perennial rivers flowing through it. BHEL solar panels in GSAT-8 BHEL has assembled and supplied space grade solar panels to ISRO. These panels have been successfully deployed on ISRO's heaviest GSAT-8 satellite which will cater to telecommunication. The total capacity of these four panels is 4.5 kW. Krishnapatnam UMPP gets CDM registration The Krishnapatnam UMPP has been registered with Clean Development Mechanism Executive Board (CDM-EB) of United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). 12.3 million Carbon credits will be generated from the project during the ten-year period during which the value of carbon credits from the project is estimated at Rs.1,100 crore.

India's first renewable energy based smart minigrid system commissioned First of its kind Renewable Energy Based Smart Mini-Grid System has been commissioned at TERI Retreat in Gurgaon. A Smart Mini-Grid (SMG), or Micro-Grid, is an intelligent electricity distribution network, operating at or below 11 KV, where the energy demand is effectively and intelligently managed by diverse range of Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) such as solar PV, micro-hydro power plants, wind turbines, biomass, small conventional generators such as diesel gensets etc in combination with each other through smart control techniques. residential complexes, educational institutions, remote unelectrified as well as electrified locations to ensure maximum flexibility, reliability and safety. MNRE invites suggestions for grid-connected solar plants under JNNSM MNRE has invited suggestions on guidelines for selection of grid-connected solar power projects under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission (JNNSM) during 2011-12. The ministry has called for suggestions regarding the maximum capacity of a photovoltaic (PV) power plant, the maximum capacity for a company to set up PV plants and modification of any specific clause of the previously issued JNNSM guidelines (dated July 25, 2010). The solar power companies have sought extension of the July 8, 2011 deadline for achieving financial closure under JNNSM as most of the companies developing solar thermal projects have failed to tie-up finances. OGPCL commissions biomass plant in Tamil Nadu Orient Green Power Company Limited (OGPCL) has synchronized 10-MW biomass power plant at Pollachi in Tamil Nadu. The plant is the first of its kind in India and uses coconut fronds for generating power. It is OGPCL's fourth plant in Tamil Nadu where the company is currently operating 155-MW wind-based and 32.5-MW biomassbased capacity.

Conergy completes 5MW solar power project in UK Germany-based developer and manufacturer of solar modules and mounting systems Conergy has completed a 5MW solar photovoltaic power plant in Hawton near Newark on Trent in Nottinghamshire, UK. The free-field solar park covers a total area of 14.6 hectares. The solar modules are expected to generate 4,860MWh of clean electricity annually. Siemens to supply equipment for 50MW solar power plant in Spain Siemens Energy has received an order from UTE Termosolar Olivenza to supply equipment for a 50MW concentrated solar power plant in Extremadura, Spain. The plant is planned to begin operation by the end of 2012.
