Dear Colleague, I hope this finds you well during this blistering heat of summer. As a layman observing the challenges the Church is facing in these times, I could not be more thankful to God for the blessing of the Dominican Friars. He has seen fit to bless the Province this year with 13 new Novices, who recently arrived at my home parish of St. Gertrude in Cincinnati where the Novitiate is located. It seems more and more, echoing what the Friars have recognized and spoken about, that God is blessing the Province, and the Church, with so many vocations, because the Dominican charism is so urgently needed at this time. With their holy witness to the Truth, through the Dominican intellectual tradition that equips them to engage the culture and the challenging issues of our day at the highest levels, they are bringing Light into this ever-darkening world. Furthermore, as a grandparent I am so thankful that these young Dominican men are going to be there during the course of the lives of my grandchildren. As the mission and work of the Friars continues to grow with the steady increase of vocations, so too do the challenges to provide for and maintain the many good works and apostolates, including the formation of the young Friars. Hence, the Friars need of our collaboration and support grows, too.

Dear Friend, May Gods grace and peace be with you and your loved ones. I hope this finds you well at the height of the summer, as you take time for vacation and perhaps some travel, seeking refreshment and renewal. In your leisure, may you, echoing our Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI revivify your spirits by contemplating the splendors of Creation, and may you take time to contemplate the One who makes all things new. St. Thomas Aquinas, O.P. said, the Good News is about God Himself. We continue to share this Good News, God Himself, throughout the summer months, throughout the Province of St. Joseph, across the country at large, as well as in mission territories far and wide. Our Student Brothers in formation are deployed in various apostolates and we take advantage of opportunities that summer brings for youth conferences, summer workshops and the like. We preach, teach, communicate, and share Gods love for each person and His saving Truth, as made manifest in the One who Himself is Love, and is the Truth. Our Holy

Himself is Love, and is the Truth. Our Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI recently stated, in speaking of the Church, that the Christian community must promote sound and demanding journeys of faith. Dear friend, no matter where your summer plans may take you, you are a partner and collaborator with us in promoting and indeed, travelling this demanding journey of faith, through the Dominican charism of preaching reconciliation for all, in season and out of season. Thank you for your faithful friendship. Please read on for snapshots of the manifold works of the Friars that you, through your steadfast support, participate in and help make possible.

May God bless you all for your dedication and commitment to the mission we share with the Dominican Friars. Sincerely in Christ, Ray Clark President

contemporary philosophy, in particular the search for Truth. Last month, the Thomistic Institute of the Pontifical Faculty of the Immaculate Conception (PFIC) at the Dominican House of Studies (DHS) in Washington, D.C. and the Catholic and Dominican Institute of Mount St. Mary College, a 4-year liberal arts college guided by the Catholic and Dominican traditions since its foundation by the Sisters of Saint Dominic in 1960 in Newburgh, NY, co-sponsored a workshop designed to formally inaugurate the project. Laying a foundation for ongoing dialogue, the conference gathered leading Catholic theologians and philosophers for what is hoped will be the first of many dialogues on developing ways to counteract todays dominant schools of philosophy that reject faith perspectives out of hand. Representing the Province were Fr. Thomas Joseph White, O.P., Acting Director of the Thomistic Institute and Fr. James Brent, O.P., who

teaches philosophy at Catholic University of America. They were joined as speakers by Fr. Charles Morerod, O.P., Rector of the Angelicum

Catholic high school youth a dynamic program of Liturgies, workshops and presentations in recognition of their vital role in the future of the Church. As is true each year, the conference reached its capacity quickly and held a record number of 220 students. Friars of the Province were well-represented at the four-day event held at St. Catharine College in Springfield, KY, administered by the Dominican Sisters of Peace. O'Connor, O.P.; Br. Cassian Derbes, O.P., and Br. John Baptist Hoang, O.P. Amongst the line-up of speakers were also priests from Servants of the Cross of Our Lord Jesus Christ of Topsham, ME, Fathers of Mercy in Auburn, KY, influential author and national speaker David Hajduk, and many more religious and lay leaders. Fr. Cuddy, who serves as Chaplain at Providence College in Providence, RI, celebrating Mass on the first day of the

conference, preached on how his hearers could deal with those among their peers who chide you and mock you because of their faith. Dont be afraid, he said, Christ will win the victory for Him through us. On the day that participants prayed outside an abortion clinic in Louisville, KY, Fr. Garrott, Prior of our Church of St. Louis Bertrand, delivered a homily in which he preached that one person can make a world of difference in fighting abortion and other seemingly unstoppable evils. From Sinner to SaintThe Confessions of St. Augustine: During the summer, our Student Brothers are assigned to ministries throughout the Province as a part of their pastoral formation, which provide opportunities to translate their learning into pastoral care and preaching. On assignment at our parish of St. Thomas Aquinas in Zanesville, OH, Br. Augustine Reisenauer, O.P. gave a talk earlier this month on St. Augustines famous Confessions, tracing the arc of the saints journey from the darkness of sin and extreme self-love, through limbo and doubt, to the joyful embrace of faith. Jonah Pollock, O.P. delivered this talk on Biblical Teachings on the Church, showing how Scripture foreshadows the structure of the Church. Summer Reading: Think about making study a part of your spirituality! Are you looking for some good books to nourish mind and soul? Fr. Bruno Shah, O.P., serving at St. Vincent Ferrer Church in NYC, has gathered into a pamphlet of summer reading selections, brief summaries on recommended books with themes literary, biblical, spiritual, and saintly. He notes in the pamphlet that the Friars mode of contemplation is specified by a commitment to study (in Dominican parlance): nailed to the wood of the desk. Please click here to download Fr. Shahs recommendations. Manhattan Pilgrimage: On July 9, making their way from New Yorks Upper Westside to Greenwich Village, six Dominican Friars of the Province of St. Joseph and two Franciscan Friars of the Renewal led some two dozen lay people on a pilgrimage through the city streets. The pilgrims visited and prayed at seven churches along the way, including three staffed by our Friars: St. Vincent Ferrer, St. Catherine of Siena, and St. Joseph (serving New York University, Cooper Union and The New School). The event was part of a new initiative to organize pilgrimages to foster devotion and fraternal charity amongst the pilgrims and to provide public witness to the faith, writes Br. Raphael Forbing, O.P. in his report on the day. Click here for a slideshow of pictures.

MEDIA
Using media old and newprint, radio, the internet and televisionthe Friars of the Province of St. Joseph are highly adept at using communications technology to preach Jesus Christ and engage listeners and viewers. Here are a few recent examples: The Conversion of Dr. Peter Kreeft, Prolific Well-known Author and Apologist: Fr. Gabriel Gillen, O.P. of Kindly Light Media, a newly launched film production apostolate of the Province of St. Joseph, recently interviewed Dr. Kreeft. In this conversation, Dr. Kreeft discusses his conversion, giving a lighthearted account about his

interactions with Dominican Friars. While studying at Yale University, Dr. Kreeft came to know our Friars at our Church of St. Mary in New Haven, CT. The Dominican Friars, whom he calls both strong and gentleand in particular the thought of St. Thomas Aquinas (the worlds greatest philosopher)played a crucial role in his conversion. This piece will be part of a larger video that Kindly Light Media is producing on Dr. Kreefts philosophy of surfingbased on his three books on the subject. I also call your attention to The Language of Form, a video that discusses the vital and distinct language of (Church) architecture and what it communicates indeed throughout history it has been called a Catechism in stone and in particular the value that classical architecture brings to the Church. Produced by Kindly Light Media, the video features footage shot at our Church of St. Vincent Ferrer in New York City. The Moral Minute: Fr. Thomas Petri, O.P., who hails from Owensboro, KY, is a featured guest on Owensboro Catholic Radios The Moral Minute. Fr. Friar of our Province and a Professor of Theology at Providence College in Providence, RI, Fr. Petri reflects in his talks on a perspective that goes to the heart of the Dominican vision. He explains that the purpose of moralitythe Churchs moral teachingis not merely to insist that people follow a set of rules, but that it is a means to make us more fully human, allowing for greater human flourishing. Balancing Tradition and Modernity: There arent many New York Catholics aware of the Archdioceses heritage of history and art who havent heard of St. Vincent Ferrer Church widely considered the finest example of (French Gothic) Catholic Church architecture in New York City. But few know that a few blocks to the East is a second Dominican church and a fascinating masterpiece in its own right. Thus begins a recent online article saluting St. Catherine of Siena Church as a unique example of a creative Catholic architecture successfully balancing both tradition and modernity. To read the article and to view photographs of the churchs interior and exterior, please click here. Advertising Nationally: To introduce and invite others to get to know the Friars of the Dominican Province of St. Joseph, with a focus on attracting vocations, we are now advertising nationally on 150 radio stations, including EWTN Radio. souls of our neighbor. It is a discipline which requires much work; in the Order of Preachers, study took the place of the manual work undertaken in the monastery. In this fascinating in-depth lecture, Fr. Gilles Emery, O.P.Professor of Theology at the University of Fribourg, Switzerlandexplains that the Friars charism of study does not hinge on a pursuit of learning for its own sake but is an integral part of doing Gods work on earth. Indeed the Dominicans study for the sake of preaching which is a spiritual work of mercy, as it pertains to the human vocation to know and love God for his own sake.
