help When You need it
Where You need it
In this recession, many of us find ourselves in need of support even those of us who have never
before had the need to access assistance.
UJA-Federation of New York created Connect to Care, an initiative that capitalizes on its capacity to
respond to a community-wide crisis and use its vast agency network to leverage the services.
The result is a broad array of services that are coordinated among agencies and area synagogues to
provide you and your family with the help you need where you need it. You can access services near
your home, your job, or are in a more discreet location, ensuring that services are easy to obtain, com-
prehensive, and delivered confidentially.
Comprehensive services include:
Employment and career transition services,
including job networking and career seminars;
Financial consultation, debt counseling
and budget assistance;
Legal services;
Supportive counseling and Jewish spiritual care;
Volunteer opportunities.
Call 631-486-2521 to speak with a staff member

The Alef Bet of Being a Mensch
Zye a mensch" is a Yiddish saying that means "Be a decent, responsible, caring person," infusing both
the best blessing and the best that an educator can wish for their students.
This exhibit is a walk through dictionary of the Hebrew Alef-Bet. These letters form the words that will
lead you and your children through the basics of being a Mensch. From the giant fluorescent Alef that
evokes Ahaval and Emet (love and truth) for all things, especially our Ema and Abba (mother and
father,) to the letter Bet that starts the words Bina and Beracha (understanding and blessing,) for our
own Banim and Banot (sons and daughters,) all the way to the last letter of the Alef-Bet - Taf for Tiferet
of Talmud Torah (the glory of studying Torah,) the Torah that teaches s the essence of being a mensch.
Join us for a fun-filled afternoon - the Alef Bet of Being a Mensch
is awaiting you!

A Fine Balance by rohinton Mistry
With a compassionate realism and narrative sweep that recall the
work of Charles Dickens, this magnificent novel captures all the
cruelty and corruption, dignity and heroism, of India. The time is
1975. The place is an unnamed city by the sea. The government
has just declared a State of Emergency, in whose upheavals four
strangers--a spirited widow, a young student uprooted from his
idyllic hill station, and two tailors who have fled the caste vio-
lence of their native village--will be thrust together, forced to
share one cramped apartment and an uncertain future.
As the characters move from distrust to friendship and from
friendship to love, A Fine Balance creates an enduring panorama
of the human spirit in an inhuman state.

Kitchen house by Kathleen Grissom
When a white servant girl violates the order of plantation socie-
ty, she unleashes a tragedy that exposes the worst and best in
the people she has come to call her family. Orphaned while
onboard ship from Ireland, seven-year-old Lavinia arrives on the
steps of a tobacco plantation where she is to live and work with
the slaves of the kitchen house. Under the care of Belle, the mas-
ter's illegitimate daughter, Lavinia becomes deeply bonded to
her adopted family, though she is set apart from them by her
white skin.
Eventually, Lavinia is accepted into the world of the big house,
where the master is absent and the mistress battles opium
addiction. Lavinia finds herself perilously straddling two very dif-
ferent worlds. When she is forced to make a choice, loyalties are
brought into question, dangerous truths are laid bare, and lives
are put at risk.
The Kitchen House is a tragic story of page-turning suspense,
exploring the meaning of family, where love and loyalty prevail.
Tuesday, October 25, 2011 (Author will be joining us)
the Fifth servant by Kenneth Wishnia
Whoever saves a single life saves the entire world . . . In 1592, as
the Catholic Church and the Protestants battle for control of the
soul of Europe, Prague is a relatively safe harbor in the religious
storm. Ruled by Emperor Rudolph II, the city is a refuge for Jews
who live within the gated walls of its ghetto. But their lives are
jeopardized when a young Christian girl is found with her throat
slashed in a Jewish shop on the eve of Passover. Charged with
blood libel, the shopkeeper and his family are arrested. All that
stands in the way of a rabid Christian mob is a clever Talmudic
scholar, newly arrived from Poland, named Benyamin Ben-Akiva.
Pleading the shopkeeper's innocence to the city's sheriff,
Benyamin is given three days to bring the true killer to justice. But
the search will not be easy. Hampered by rabbinic law, and with
no allies or connections, Benyamin has only his wits, knowledge,
and faith to guide him on his questa trail that weaves from the
city's teeming streets to the quiet of a shul, from the forbidden
back rooms of a ghetto brothel to the emperor's lavish palace.
Infused with history and spiritual insight, rich in atmosphere and
color, The Fifth Servant vividly re-creates sixteenth-century
Praguea bustling city where superstition, ignorance, and hatred
clash with curiosity, knowledge, and tolerance; a world in which
innocent lives are swept away by political and religious struggles,
and righteous men and women sacrifice everything in the name
of justice and truth

the Paris Wife by Paula McLain
A deeply evocative story of ambition and betrayal, The Paris Wife
captures a remarkable period of time and a love affair between
two unforgettable people: Ernest Hemingway and his wife
Hadley. Chicago, 1920: Hadley Richardson is a quiet twenty-
eight-year-old who has all but given up on love and happiness,
until she meets Ernest Hemingway and her life changes forever.
Following a whirlwind courtship and wedding, the pair set sail for
Paris, where they become the golden couple in a lively and
volatile group, the fabled "Lost Generation" that includes:
Gertrude Stein, Ezra Pound, and F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald.
Though deeply in love, the Hemingways are ill prepared for the
hard-drinking and fast-living life of Jazz Age Paris, which hardly
values traditional notions of family and monogamy. Surrounded
by beautiful women and competing egos, Ernest struggles to
find the voice that will earn him a place in history, pouring all the
richness and intensity of his life with Hadley and their circle of
friends into the novel that will become The Sun Also Rises.
Hadley, meanwhile, strives to hold on to her sense of self as the
demands of life with Ernest grow costly and her roles as wife,
friend, and muse become more challenging. Despite their
extraordinary bond, they eventually find themselves facing the
ultimate crisis of their marriage, a deception that will lead to the
unraveling of everything they've fought so hard for.
A heartbreaking portrayal of love and torn loyalty, The Paris Wife
is all the more poignant because we know that, in the end,
Hemingway wrote that he would rather have died than fallen in
love with anyone but Hadley

drop shot by harlan Coben
Sports agent Myron Bolitar is poised on the edge of the big time.
So is Christian Steele, a rookie quarterback and Myron's prized
client. But when Christian gets a phone call from a former girl-
friend, a woman who everyone, including the police, believes is
dead, the deal starts to go sour. Trying to unravel the truth about
a family's tragedy, a woman's secret, and a man's lies, Myron is up
against the dark side of his business--where image and talent
make you rich, but the truth can get you killed.
In novels that crackle with wit and suspense, Edgar Award winner
Harlan Coben has created one of the most fascinating and com-
plex heroes in suspense fiction--Myron Bolitar--a hotheaded,
tenderhearted sports agent who grows more and more engaging
and unpredictable with each page-turning appearance.
