2011 - 2012 COURSE OUTLINE DETAILS English IV: World Literature This course aims to integrate the classic with the modern and illuminate the unknown with the familiar. Its scope ranges from the literature of the ancient world to that of the present day. The students will be taught specific techniques for textual analysis in units throughout the school year. This division into units is only for making it easier for the teacher to explain the concepts and for the student to master them. In reality, all the elements in a text are tightly woven Course Description together and cannot simply be discussed out of context. The teacher will reiterate this during lectures and other classroom activities. Integrated into the study of literature are language lessons focusing on grammar, punctuation, and other formal conventions. These are applied through various activities that allow students to explore and experiment with different forms of writing. The goal is for students to master not just the techniques for understanding literature, but also to express their appreciation through fluent writing and speaking.
