Whats inside...
Elisa Santana Co-editor Walking into any classroom and there will be at least one student who always falls asleep. However, do students intentionally fall asleep in class, or is it just an unconscious action? Studies done by Stanford University showed the reason many teens have trouble falling asleep is due to melatonin, a hormone that keeps students awake past 10 PM. This is why students find themselves watching South Park at 1 am, while their parents are fast asleep. I just start watching one show and every time I flip through the channels I find something else I want to watch, senior Deon Bryant said. Another reason that students do not get enough sleep that many of them are overly involved. Students try burning the candle from both ends; they have jobs, extra curricular activities, and school to manage, English teacher Lisa Prejean said. When students do fall asleep in class it is likely due to lack of participation. In soccer, Im running around and I enjoy the class, so I stay awake. But in other classes where I sit the entire time I daze off, senior Adrian Jasso said. This supports the idea that active involvement in the classroom keeps students awake. At night, when nearing the time you wish to fall asleep, it is important to not

I always feel well and energized after having a good nights sleep, senior Christian Parker said. By not having enough sleep your immune system can become weaker and make a person more susceptible to serious illnesses. Some students may not know how to fall into a deep slumber. Can students identify mainstream political figures?

High school students assume that the latest in government politics does not apply to them. Congressman Chet Edwards, the incumbent in the Congressional District 17 said, Many of the laws we pass today in Congress will directly impact students future - like student loan programs that may impact their ability to go to college. The reason why it is impor-

tant for students to be involved in politics is, knowing how a representative can represent you, Van Taylor, Republican candidate for Congress District 17, said. Garcia said that high school students need to be more involved because they should have a voice in government. Edwards said that many of his campaign staff consists of people that got involved during high school or earlier. One way to be active and knowledgeable in government politics is by reading the newspaper, added Edwards. Charleton said that teenagers certainly have the opportunity to be better and well informed voters by watching and tuning into political debates, and forums. Taylor also said that teachers are another great source; teachers can encourage their students to be more politically involved. Its never too early to get involved! Even if you are not eligible to vote, you still have an important stake in the decisions being made in government at both local and national levels, Edwards said.

Body mutilation or body glorification?

Elisa Santana Co-editor In times when plastic surgery is common and achieving perfection is desired, it is easy to understand the concept of someone wanting to change their body by means of tattoos and piercings. With ten percent of teenagers having tattoos and about thirty percent of them having piercings, it is obvious that body glorification has its support among BHS students. Some of these people being recently turned eighteen celebrate by getting a tattoo or a piercing. Wanting to get a tattoo builds up inside of you until your eighteen and then you are building on yourself, senior Erica Zimmerman said. Those who go out and change their appearance by getting a tattoo or a piercing on their birthday or on any occasion see it as improving and beautifying themselves. Other refute this idea and think that getting a tattoo is a bad idea. Senior Sam Jones echos this idea and says getting a tattoo is careless and leaves a permant mark that you may or may not want later on in life. Although piercings and tattoos used to be taboo and on the fringe of society, they are now common-

place. The definition of what is truly extreme has been pushed once again by peoples participation in scarification and hook implantation. Body scarification involves taking a scapel and cutting the body in order to leave scars in the form of a picture. While other people are having rings hooked through their backs so that when the hooks are tied properly it resembles a corset. Or, for fans of X-Men, Wolverine-like claws can be implanted into the hands. Permantly altering my body isnt something I would ever consider doing, and it suprises me that anyone would go to the extreme of scarification or implantation, senior Charlie Stott said. Whatever different personalities may desire, there is a traditional or completely inventive way to change the bodies appearance.

Local Halloween Fun: Tricks or Treats

Rachael Daylong Staff writer Jason Galindo Co-editor What scares you the most? Ghosts, ghouls, goblins? Facing your parents when you are ten minutes past curfew? Or having to eat your green beans? Whatever your fear, around Halloween there is always a way to satisfy your need for adrenaline. In Bryan/College Station there are many places that can fulfill the hunger for fear. A lot of local families and organizations create their own haunted houses or scary woods. Mexican American Seniors, an organization filled with BHS students had their own Field of Fears on October 28 and 29. Every year around mid-September, the Commanders, a local family, begin constructing a Haunted Fortress on the side of their house, located on East 29th street. This is one of the most well-known houses that goes all out for Halloween, with blow-up figures, cobwebs, pumpkins, and even cookies and juice Another yearly endevor frequented by many people is the Wicked Woods which is hosted by the Texas A&M fraternity, Kappa Sigma located across from Easterwood Airport at 4466 Raymond Stozer. The Wicked Woods starts at 8 pm on Oct. 30-31, and the cost is $9. This event also aims to link good old fashion fun with charity by offering a $2 discount to anyone who brings a canned food item. Some people dont enjoy the fear induced rush of haunted houses and opt to go the calmer route of trick-or-treating and costume parties. Halloween parties are famed for the candy, games and costume contests. Many local churches and even Post Oak Mall also offer a safe environment where people are encouraged to play games and eat lots of candy. The food, the decorations and even the people are all themed to spooky proportions as people get into the spirit of the holiday by taking on the persona of their costumed character. If you want to stay in for the night, it is always an option to rent a blood curdling, scary movie or participate in one of the most famous Halloween

pastimes, pumpkin carving. There are thousands of scary movies to choose from or just turn on the television to watch the Peanuts classic, Charlie Brown and The Great Pumpkin. Pumpkins work as a great medium for sculpture and can be carved into anything from the standard pumpkin face to something more artistic like a replica of a movie stars face. Millions of pumpkins are sold and carved each year, only to be left rotting on the porch for weeks once Halloween has passed. Whether its fear you crave on Halloween, or maybe something more lighthearted, like pumpkin carving, you can be sure to find it in Bryan or College Station

Got Milk? Got Stomach Cramps?

Many of us have all experienced being forced to get a milk because it is a part of the enriched lunch in our cafeteria. At least once a week I have to get the milk and chunk it in the sad Elisa Santana pan of ice cubes with the Co-editor other rejected milk cartons. I try to expalin to the cashiers that Im lactose-intolerant, but it never seems to work. Being lactose-intolerant means my stomach can not digest lactose, which is contained in dairy products. Everytime I get the milk its a slap in the face. . . The World Revolves Around Me
Most students have heard their peers remark about how they can get whatever they want from their parents. Although there are some students who are heavily involved in school activites and work hard for their grades, there are other students who just rely on their parents while they coast through school. Many students feel like the world owes them something and they are the center of the universe. Those students lack the skills needed to be selfsufficient and earn the things they want. This group of students expect to get a brand new car on their sixteenth birthday and never to have to wear anything without a name brand label. This doesnt make sense to those who have to juggle two jobs and high school homework to pay for their gas, insurance, clothes, food and anything else they need to survive. With many students, if the handouts arent there, the cocky attitude is. The idea that only I matter because this is my world because I live in it is seen amongst the lunch tables and classrooms. Not only does this attitude completely disregard the feelings of those around that person, but it also makes that person look obnoxious and arrogant. So whether you are sporting the if I got it flaunt it or Im number one! attitude, lose it. I can buy some apple juice, tea, or koolaid in order to suppress my thirst. Sometimes I forget my money though and its a waste for me to have to spend my own money on something that should be given to me for free. I set out then to to find a way for us lactys to have liberation from the harnesses of cafeteria milk. Although I tried contacting the administration, they were tied up in meetings and could not be reached on my lacty revolution. Instead I went to the source of my pain, the cafeteria, where I chatted it up with the gals. They informed me that if I brought a doctors note explaining that I was lactose intolerant they would put it in the system so I could get free juice at lunch. Success! I confirmed this with Lety Corpesm, a member of the school nutrition services. Once again success for Elisa and my fellow lactys. So bring a note from your doctor and get juice instead of milk. Monstrous Messy Muddy Hill

I hate muddy shoes. I spend valuable amounts of my time picking out the perfect shoe and when I arrive at school I am forced to brave The Hill. We all know what the Hill is. We have all, at Rachael Daylong one point, had to walk Staff writer across its eroding surface. We have all dirtied some article of clothing trying to get into the fine arts building or to the buses. Not only are our clothes in danger, are well being is in danger as too. Many people fall trying to get up that hill every rainy day. The signs of these stumbles can be seen on the legs and bottoms of freshmen who didnt know better than to try and brave the Hill. However, people can not solve this problem by simply avoiding the hill. That path must be utilized by bus riders, who if they chose any other path would miss their buses and also by numerous people that are forced to enter the fine arts building through the door near the tennis courts.

These people have no other choice than to walk along side the building through the mud. If you are a teacher reading this article and you seem to think it has nothing to do with you, I will inform you otherwise. If a student walked into your class in a ghastly mood, covered in mud all along one side, with no change of clothes and no one to bring them some, what would you do? Strokes of Improvement
Logan Kickham Staff writer Swimming With the Bryan Aquatic Center currently unusable, the swim team is having a hard time finding ways to make their practices effective. Practices are being held at Henderson Harbor, a four lane pool with no heater or starting blocks. Many swimmers feel that this is impacting the outcome of previous and upcoming meets. The pool is really crammed but we cant do anything about it. We dont get the best workout, but we are still doing good junior Nicole Taliaferro said. Bryans boys and girls teams recently suffered a loss during their first meet at A&M Consolidated on Oct. 12. Most of the team, however, is not discouraged. They know once Bryan Aquatic is usable again, practices will become much more efficient and improvements in all events will be made. Bryan Highs swim team appears to

have a promising future. Senior Daniel Karkoska thinks there is a lot of potential talent in the new girls and they look to have a strong team. With over ten new freshmen many are hoping to see winning swim teams for years to come. Water Polo Even though the Bryan High water polo teams season did not go in their favor, the team is very young and only looks to improve. The boys were unable to field a complete team, but still played some games by borrowing players from other teams. The girls had a young team this year with two seniors and eight freshman. Although this was a building year, many think it means that there is a great future for girls water polo at Bryan High. Next year, improving may still be the primary goal, but the team will have more experience and confidence when they hit the pool.

Ultimate Sports
Rachael Daylong Staff writer How would you like to try a twist on an old sport, instead of a classic like football and soccer? If you like running, throwing, and catching there is a relatively new sport that is sweeping across high school and college campuses - Ultimate Frisbee. Many people have played frisbee with their friends, however traditional frisbee lacks the structure and excitement to make it a sport. The rules of Ultimate are pretty easy; the goal of the game is to pass the frisbee to the opposing end of the field and get it past the goal line. The hard part of the game is that you can not run with the frisbee, you must pass it to another team member in order to progress it across the field. Also, if you drop it or miss a pass then possesion switches to the other team. Many BHS students participate in this game, but few know of its hidden potential.

The best way to play Ultimate Frisbee is in the dark. To play the game you first need a large, dark, open space. You also need two different color glow in the dark bracelets or necklaces. One color, like green, for the first team and another color, like orange, for the second team. Now there is only one thing left, a glow in the dark frisbee. Or a frisbee that lights up. It makes the game much more fun and interesting. Senior Stephen Marquardt, a notorious frisbee athlete, said that the best place to play is in a dry well lit place and at night becuase it is cooler. He also recommends playing sevenon-seven for the most intense play time. Ultimate Frisbee doesnt require players to be ultimate athletes, only energetic and sociable. Ultimate is fun to play and Shaun Payne is the man! Marquardt said. New CDs Give Listeners a Variety of Music

Jason Galindo Staff Writer For those music fans that are waiting for all of the hot new CDs, this article is for you. If you are looking for a new Hip-Hop CD to rock in your iPod, jam in your car, or sleep to at night, an up and coming artist by the name of Jibbs is dropping his debut album Jibbs feat. Jibbs on October 24. If Hip-Hop is your thing, you can swang with ZRos new CD 4/20 the Anthem, however, you will have to wait until June 27. If that doesnt float your boat you can get your thug-thizzle on with The Makings of Me that was released on October 3 by a pro in the game, Monica. I like the track Everytime the Beat Drops, but dont really enjoy any of the other tracks on the CD. If you enjoy a smoother, lower sound you might like Lyfe Jennings The Phoenix which was released on August 26, 2007, or if you have a taste for the complete opposite try Extreme Behavior that the group Hinder released earlier this year on September 27. Beyonce dropped BDay on September 5 and it proved to be a huge success. Justin Timberlakes song My Love ft. T.I., that has had tremendous radio play,

Page 7

is featured on his CD LoveSounds and will be released September 12, a long wait for the former NSync fans and the new fans of Justin since he went solo. Another hit for the Pop listeners is definitely Christina Aguileras Back to Basics which you can purchase on August 15. For those of you who are not looking for new CDs, but instead for throwbacks, worth purchasing or downloading, from your childhood you can try a mix-tape by the group Dead Prez of Lets Get Free originally released in the early months of the year 2000. If you like Kanye West then you would probably like any CD by the artist Talib Kweli. If you like a more uplifting sound like that of John Legend, try Commons One Day Itll All Make Sense released in 1997. Common being one of my favorite artists in the Hip-Hop genre. Wyclef Jean of The Fugees, a Haitian with a message, has a handful of CDs worth buying. One of my favorites being The Ecleftic featuring the song 911 that got a small amount of rotation on the radio when it was released. If you have the money I recommend that you buy all of the CDs mentioned in this article and learn the CORRECT lyrics, because it really chaps my hide when you hear someone singing your favorite song, but totally butchering the lyrics!

Cult Classic
Tiffany Torres Staff writer 9/10 Donnie Darko is about the odyssey of a young confused, maybe a little dark, teenager played excellently by Jake Gyllenhall. This movie contains an all-star cast including Jena Malone who plays the kind girlfriend of Donnie. Drew Barrymore is the insightful and sarcastic English teacher, Ms. Pomeroy. Noah Wyle is the caring physics teacher, Dr. Monnitoff, and Patrick Swayze beautifully plays the Southern televangelist who takes it upon himself to make sure the suburban town of Middlesex does not succumb to the path of fear. Donnie Darko is probably one of the darkest protagonists in 21st century cinema. A character possibly

related to Donnie Darko is Holden Claufield from the literary piece Catcher in the Rye. Donnie suffers from schizophrenia which causes him to have hallucinations, mostly about a demonic bunny rabbit. Yes, a six foot tall bunny rabbit named Frank who tells him that the world will end in 28 days. To really be captivating this movie may be an acquired taste. It really makes viewers think outside the box because it questions the existence of God and theories of time travel. The ending didnt quite do it for me, which made it come up just short of a perfect 10. This movie is one of those movies that you either love or hate. One thing for sure this movie leaves quite an impact and is revered, by many, as a cult classic.

Networks Combine Hit Shows

Logan Kickham Staff writer Americas Next Top Model, Gilmore Girls, One Tree Hill, and many other teen favorites have joined together on a new network, The CW. The CW combined the most popular shows from the WB and UPN. With a strong response from the key demographic (15-40 year olds) the station has been an instant success with 4.19 million viewers tuning in to watch the premiere of 7th Heavens 11th season. Charged with success of many shows on their previous networks The CW looks for a gain in viewership. Gilmore Girls is one of the highlights of The CWs schedule. It is a great show to sit down and watch with your a group of friends or your mom. Lorelai Gilmore (Lauren Graham) plays a large role in what makes the show so entertaining. Graham brings a style of acting to the show that makes you want to be friends with her character. The show never lets itself get too weighty as it demonstrates that even the roughest times in life Primetime Sunday Monday

cant be taken too seriously. One of The CWs most popular shows, One Tree Hill, is another teen drama about a group of high school students and their attempts to make it through each of their individual struggles. Half-brothers, Nathan and Lucas Scott, have grown up on opposite sides of the track while still sharing the same father. Through a series of events the two come together as teenage life creates drama and suspense. One Tree Hill is a teenage soap opera that deals with issues ranging from school shootings to teen marriage. The writers ability to make a role for all personalities to relate to is only one of many reasons this show is a hit. With so many different personalities on the show, viewers will eventually find themselves rooting for at least one of the characters. Although many students might not see their own high school experiences reflected identically in the lives of the students at Tree Hill High, it makes for some great entertainment.
