EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
This project was executed for Microlucid technology Pvt. Ltd. The project undertaken was titled Market survey, sales and promotion for website selling. Introduction to project- Need and want of consumers are key ingredients for any business or service. In todays world consumers need and want are drastically changes. For project my organization told me to focus only three sectors i.e. education, hotel and travel and manufacturing industry the project was undertaken with an objective of studying need and use of website in the business decide promotion strategies. Primary objective of the project is to survey various types of business, need and use of website in the consumers business and Selling and promotion of websites according to then. This project has a wide scope because this study can find how websites are essential in business and up to what extent technology spread in small towns and acceptance of new technology from consumers . The study is confined to NASIK district only; hence the results cannot be generalized and the findings in this study are purely dependent on the answers of the respondents and also study was limited to a specific period (May - June 10). As study focuses only on three sectors so we cant predict same for other sectors. I found in my survey education sector adversely affected due to UGC norms as its compulsory to have website. For hotel industry its todays need that to have online booking, online transaction etc. while it have huge scope in service industry as they want to reach maximum number of people. According to my survey I want to suggest to company is first make promotion as consumers dont know from where website created or which company create it? For pricing policy company must want to change pricing structure for educational institute as they dont want luxury but simple website. I have concluded from project NASIK district is one of the potential areas for company as only few knows from where websites to be developed if company make promotion it will definitely help.

Chapter No. 1 INTRODUCTION

1.1 Back ground of study During his evolution journey from Neanderthals to Homo erectus and then to Homo sapiens, man has come long way. Because of his continuous quest for more and more amenities and facilities, the nineties have seen a major turnaround with the invention of computers. 10 years ago, the term internet was practically anonymous to most of the people. And today internet has become the most ever powerful tool for man throughout the world. The internet is a collection of various services and resources. Although, many people still think e-mail and World Wide Web as the principle constituents of internet, there is lot more in store than e-mail, chat rooms, celebrity web sites and search engines. It also became the best business tool of modern scenario. Today internet has brought a globe in a single room. Right from news across the corner of the world, wealth of knowledge to shopping, purchasing the tickets of your favourite movie-everything is at your finger tips. Internet has great potential and lot to offer The Internet is also often simply referred to as the NET.

Internet users in India from 98-08 India had as on September 2008 45.3 million active internet users. This is according to the I-Cube [Internet in India] Study released today and conducted annually by IMRB International and Internet and Mobile Association of India [IAMAI]. Active internet users are those who have used the internet at least once in the last one month this is an internationally accepted benchmark for enumerating internet users. Urban users continue to dominate internet use contributing to 42 million of the 45 million odd users. In September last 2007, the number of active internet users in urban India was 32 million showing a year on year growth of a little more than 30 per cent.

What people generally do on internet? Difference between Internet and World Wide Web The terms Internet and World Wide Web are often used in everyday speech without much distinction. However, the Internet and the World Wide Web are not one and the same. The Internet is a global data communications system. It is a hardware and software infrastructure that provides connectivity between computers. In contrast, the Web is one of the services

communicated via the Internet. It is a collection of interconnected documents and other resources, linked by hyperlinks and URLs. To get online, meaning to connect to the Internet, you need to have:

A Computer: Computer equipment is a sizeable investment and thus you should select a computer carefully. Internet Service Provider: This is the software that you will require to get online. You can choose from a dial-up service or 24-hour broadband services USB modem this is the service that will help you to connect to the Internet.

History of internet
The Internet was the result of some visionary thinking by people in the early 1960s that saw great potential value in allowing computers to share information on research and development in scientific and military fields. J.C.R. Licklider of MIT, first proposed a global network of computers in 1962, and moved over to the Defence Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) in late 1962 to head the work to develop it. Leonard Klein rock of MIT and later UCLA developed the theory of packet switching, which was to form the basis of Internet connections. First user of Internet - Charley Kline at UCLA sent the first packets on Arpanet as he tried to connect to Stanford Research Institute on Oct 29, 1969. The system crashed as he reached the G in LOGIN! The early Internet was used by computer experts, engineers, scientists, and librarians. There was nothing friendly about it. There were no home or office personal computers in those days, and anyone who used it, whether a computer professional or an engineer or scientist or librarian, had to learn to use a very complex system. E-mail was adapted for ARPANET by Ray Tomlinson of BBN in 1972. He picked the @ symbol from the available symbols on his teletype to link the username and address. From 69 to 89 Internet is hard to use it therefore only computer experts, engineers, scientists, and librarians. In 1989 another significant event took place in making the nets easier to use. Tim Berners-Lee and others at the European Laboratory for Particle Physics, more popularly known as CERN, proposed a new protocol for information distribution. This protocol, which became the World Wide Web in 1991, was based on hypertext--a system of embedding links in text to link to other text, which you have been using every time you selected a text link while reading these pages. Although started before gopher, it was slower to develop. The development in 1993 of the graphical browser Mosaic by Marc Andreessen and his team at the National Centre for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) (US) gave the protocol its big boost. Later, Andreessen moved to become the brains

behind Netscape Corp., which produced the most successful graphical type of browser and server until Microsoft declared war and developed its Microsoft Internet Explorer.

History of internet connection providers

There is huge transformation in type of internet connections recent years. We use dial-up broad-band and now Wi-Fi. Wireless has grown rapidly in the past few years, and travelers search for the Wi-Fi where they can connect while they are away from the home or office. Many airports, coffee bars, hotels and motels now routinely provide these services, some for a fee and some for free. A next big growth area is the surge towards universal wireless access, where almost everywhere is a "hot spot". Municipal Wi-Fi or city-wide access, wiMAX offering broader ranges than Wi-Fi, EV-DO, 4g, and other formats will joust for dominance in the USA in the years ahead. The battle is both economic and political. Another trend that is rapidly affecting web designers is the growth of smaller devices to connect to the Internet. Small tablets, pocket PCs, smart phones, eBooks, game machines, and even GPS devices are now capable of tapping into the web on the go, and many web pages are not designed to work on that scale. As the Internet has become ubiquitous, faster, and increasingly accessible to non-technical communities, social networking and collaborative services have grown rapidly, enabling people to communicate and share interests in many more ways. Sites like Face book, Twitter, Linked-In, YouTube, Flicker, Second Life, delicious, blogs, wikis, and many more let people of all ages rapidly share their interests of the moment with others everywhere. WEBSITE Definition A website is a collection of related web pages, images, videos or other digital assets that are addressed relative to a common Uniform Resource Locator (URL), often consisting of only the domain name, or the IP address, and the root path ('/') in an Internet Protocol-based network. A web site is hosted on at least one web server, accessible via a network such as the Internet or a private local area network.

A web page is a document, typically written in plain text interspersed with formatting instructions of Hypertext Markup Language (HTML, XHTML) The pages of a website can usually be accessed from a simple Uniform Resource Locator (URL) called the homepage. The URLs of the pages organize them into a hierarchy, although hyper linking between them conveys the reader's perceived site structure and guides the reader's navigation of the site. Some websites require a subscription to access some or all of their content. Examples of subscription websites include many business sites, parts of news websites, academic journal websites, gaming websites, message boards, web-based e-mail, social networking websites, websites providing real-time stock market data, and websites providing various other services (e.g. websites offering storing and/or sharing of images, files and so forth).

HISTORY
The World Wide Web (WWW) was created in 1989 by CERN physicist Tim Berners-Lee. On 30 April 1993, CERN announced that the World Wide Web would be free to use for anyone. Before the introduction of HTML and HTTP, other protocols such as file transfer protocol and the gopher protocol were used to retrieve individual files from a server. These protocols offer a simple directory structure which the user navigates and chooses files to download. Documents were most often presented as plain text files without formatting or were encoded in word processor formats. Organized by function, a website may be

a a a a

personal website commercial website government website non-profit organization website

It could be the work of an individual, a business or other organization, and is typically dedicated to some particular topic or purpose. Any website can contain a hyperlink to any other website, so the distinction between individual sites, as perceived by the user, may sometimes be blurred. Websites are written in, or dynamically converted to, HTML (Hyper Text Markup Language) and are accessed using a software interface classified as a user agent. Web pages can be viewed or otherwise accessed from a range of computer-based and Internet-enabled devices of various sizes, including desktop computers, laptops, PDAs and cell phones. A website is hosted on a computer system known as a web server, also called an HTTP server, and these terms can also refer to the software that runs on these systems and that retrieves and delivers the web pages in response to requests from the website users. Apache is the most commonly

used web server software (according to Net craft statistics) and Microsoft's Internet Information Server (IIS) is also commonly used.

TYPES OF WEBSITES
There are two types of websites 1) Static website 2) Dynamic website 1) Static website A static website is one that has web pages stored on the server in the format that is sent to a client web browser. It is primarily coded in Hypertext Markup Language (HTML). Simple forms or marketing examples of websites, such as classic website, a five-page website or a brochure website are often static websites, because they present pre-defined, static information to the user. This may include information about a company and its products and services via text, photos, animations, audio/video and interactive menus and navigation. This type of website usually displays the same information to all visitors. Similar to handing out a printed brochure to customers or clients, a static website will generally provide consistent, standard information for an extended period of time. Although the website owner may make updates periodically, it is a manual process to edit the text, photos and other content and may require basic website design skills and software. In summary, visitors are not able to control what information they receive via a static website, and must instead settle for whatever content the website owner has decided to offer at that time. 2)

Dynamic website

A dynamic website is one that changes or customizes itself frequently and automatically, based on certain criteria. Dynamic websites can have two types of dynamic activity: Code and Content. Dynamic code is invisible or behind the scenes and dynamic content is visible or fully displayed. Dynamic code - The first type is a web page with dynamic code. The code is constructed dynamically on the fly using active programming language instead of plain, static HTML. Dynamic content - The second type is a website with dynamic content displayed in plain view. Variable content is displayed dynamically on the fly based on certain criteria, usually by retrieving content stored in a database.

Purpose of dynamic websites - The main purpose of a dynamic website is automation. A dynamic website can operate more effectively, be built more efficiently and is easier to maintain, update and expand. It is much simpler to build a template and a database than to build hundreds or thousands of individual, static HTML web pages. Types of websites- depending upon use of website/ content in website There are many varieties of websites, each specializing in a particular type of content or use, and they may be arbitrarily classified in any number of ways. A few such classifications might include:

Corporate website: used to provide background information about a business, organization, or service. Electronic commerce (e-commerce) site: a site offering goods and services for online sale and enabling online transactions for such sales. Affiliate: enabled portal that rend not only its custom CMS but also syndicated content from other content providers for an agreed fee. There are usually three relationship tiers. Affiliate Agencies (e.g., Commission Junction), Advertisers (e.g., eBay) and consumer (e.g., Yahoo!). Archive site: used to preserve valuable electronic content threatened with extinction. Two examples are: Internet Archive, which since 1996 has preserved billions of old (and new) web pages; and Google Groups, which in early 2005 was archiving over 845,000,000 messages posted to Usenet news/discussion groups. Brand building site: a site with the purpose of creating an experience of a brand online. These sites usually do not sell anything, but focus on building the brand. Brand building sites are most common for lowvalue, high-volume fast moving consumer goods. Information site: contains content that is intended to inform visitors, but not necessarily for commercial purposes, such as: RateMyProfessors.com, Free Internet Lexicon and Encyclopaedia. Most government, educational and non-profit institutions have an informational site. Java applet site: contains software to run over the Web as a Web application. Personal homepage: run by an individual or a small group (such as a family) that contains information or any content that the individual wishes to include. These are usually uploaded using a web hosting service such as Geocities. Porn site: A site that shows sexually explicit content for enjoyment and relaxation, most likely in the form of an Internet gallery, dating site, blog, social networking, or video sharing. School site: a site on which teachers, students, or administrators can post information about current events at or involving their school. U.S. elementary-high school websites generally use k12 in the URL, such as kearney.k12.mo.us.

Search engine site: a site that provides general information and is intended as a gateway or lookup for other sites. A pure example is Google, and well-known sites include Yahoo! Search and Bing. Social networking site: a site where users could communicate with one another and share media, such as pictures, videos, music, blogs, etc. with other users. These may include games and web applications. Web portal: a site that provides a starting point or a gateway to other resources on the Internet or an intranet. Wiki site: a site which users collaboratively edit such as Wikipedia and Wiki how.

ADVANTAGES OF HAVING WEBSITES IN BUSINESS 1) The information is available to be accessed by anyone, anywhere, anytime. The information within a site can be quickly accessed. There is no need to sift through several pages. 2) The site may provide links to other sites on the same topic and can be updated to always provide the latest information. 3) The site creator/author doesnt need to be present when someone is retrieving information. The author can usually be contacted through an emailing address or a message board connected to the site. 4) There is no need to carry a hard copy of information with you. (No heavy book) Easy to use the information to create your own resource. DISADVANTAGES OF HAVING WEBSITE IN BUSINESS 1) It may be difficult for researchers to locate, especially if there are many similar sites. Because it is not published or authorized by a reputable source, the site may be disregarded as inaccurate. 2) The information on the site may not be reliable or Information may be interpreted incorrectly or used inappropriately. 3) A connection to the web is needed to access the information, which will be impossible if a computer and connection is not available. 4) It may be difficult to reach your target audience. 5) Because the author is not present when others are retrieving information there is no opportunity to ask questions or have things explained in greater detail etc. As it can be seen, website format has both
its strengths and weaknesses. Its complexity is its advantage but may also be its downfall. Careful consideration should be made when deciding which medium is best to present information. These include things such as who is the target audience and whether the simplicity of an overhead or a piece of paper may be a more desirable option

1.2 Background of the Topic:-

Theoretical Background:Marketers today have better marketing metrics for measuring the market demand, market share, and opportunities in area. Market Survey A market survey is a research technique used to gather consumer preferences and purchase intent of a company's products and services within a geographical area. Market surveys are conducted either in-house by the company or through a marketing research agency. Significance of market survey Market surveys are extremely important because companies learn what their customers like and dislike about their products and services. That way, companies can better meet their customers' demands. Types of Surveys 1. Telephonic interviews: Companies use telephone interviews to gather specific information from their customers. The questions are developed ahead of time in the form of a questionnaire. Telephone interviews can be conducted relatively inexpensively versus other survey methods. 2. Online market survey: Some companies use direct mail surveys to collect information from their customers. A series of "yes/no" and "agree/disagree" questions are simple and can be completed within a few minutes 3. One-on-One Surveys: One-on-one market surveys, another qualitative market-survey technique, are typically used for introducing new products. For example, a company may observe a customer operating a new type of software. The interviewer would then ask the customer and others how they like the new software and whether or not they would purchase it. One-on-one surveys are often used for beta tests to iron out problems before the product goes national..

Drawback in market survey 1. Market research surveys usually reflect what consumers say they will do and not necessary what they will do. This is particularly true when companies ask customers and non-customers how likely they are to purchase a particularly product in the future.

SALES

A sale is the pinnacle activity involved in the selling products or services in return for money or other compensation. It is an act of completion of a commercial activity. Sales techniques A sale can take place through:

Direct sales, involving person to person contact Performa sales Agency-based o Sales agents (for example in real estate or in manufacturing) o Sales outsourcing through direct branded representation o Transaction sales o Consultative sales o Complex sales o telesales o consumer Travelling salesman 1) Door to door methods 2) Hawking

Difference between marketing and selling Marketing process is broad and includes all of the following: 1. 2. 3. 4. Discovering what product, service or idea customers want. Producing a product with the appropriate features and quality. Pricing the product correctly. Promoting the product; spreading the word about why customers should buy it. 5. Selling and delivering the product into the hands of the customer. Selling is one activity of the entire marketing process. Selling is the act of persuading or influencing a customer to buy (actually exchange something of value for) a product or service. The selling concept, instead of focusing on meeting consumer demand, tries to make consumer demand match the products it has produced. Where the marketing encompasses many research and promotional activities to discover what products are wanted and to make potential customers aware of them. Objectives of the sales Promotion:Businesses can target sales promotion towards three different audiences:

Sales promotion acts as a competitive weapon by providing an extra incentive for the target audience to purchase or support one brand over another. Sales promotion is a tool used to achieve most of the following five major promotional objectives:1. Building product awareness: several sales promotion techniques are highly effective in exposing the clients to products for the first time and can serve as key promotional components in the early stages of new product introduction. 2. Creating interest: marketers find that sales promotions are very effective in creating interest in a product. In fact, creating interest is often considered as the most important use of sales promotion. 3. Providing information: Generally sales promotion techniques are designed to move the customers to some action and are rarely simply informational in nature. 4. Stimulating demand: next to building initial product awareness, the most important use of sales promotion is to build demand by convincing the clients to make a purchase. Special promotions, especially those that lower the cost of ownership to the customer (e.g. price reduction) can be employed to stimulate sales. 5. Reinforcing the brand: once clients have made a purchase, the sales promotion can be used to both encourage additional purchasing and also as a reward for purchase loyalty.

Exploratory research has done by collecting data. The study was mainly conducted in three steps i.e. Survey, Data collection and Analysis of the data. The detailed steps are as shown below: Introduction and Briefing Problem Identification and Planning of the Study Research Proposal Research Proposal was Prepared Exploratory Research Questionnaire was Prepared. Survey and Data Collection Data Collection from client Data Analysis and Interpretation Suggestions and conclusion.

DATA COLLECTION:
There are two types of data 1.PRIMARY DATA :-

Data that is collected for the specific purpose at hand in called as primary data. It is customized according to the needs of the researcher and focuses exclusively on the current research problem. The collection of primary data is costly and time consuming. It calls for greater planning and co-ordination. Collection of primary data requires deploying more manpower In situations where it is impossible to use the secondary data keeping in view the requirements of the study, or in cases where there is no secondary data keeping in view the requirements of the study, or in case where there is no secondary data available, the only way out is to collect primary data. LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY

The research was carried out in only in Nashik so conclusion may vary with reference to the whole country or world. It is not possible to ascertain the exact market size and to find out the facts and figures from the market. It was also relatively difficult to come out to a conclusion as the feedback from the market is of pail The future market conditions may change from the existing one. So the reliability in terms of the application of market strategies in future is the biggest limitations.

Experience And Difficulties faced in field

The market research that we conducted provided me excellent opportunity lo implement all that we had learnt in our classroom session in practical outfield. After designing the questionnaire I have to make Jew minor changes when we

were ready to out in the field out the survey as mentioned earlier We covered Nashik region. We found that respondent were very forthcoming and cooperated with us for most of the time.

Limitations:1. The study was based on the perception. Ideas and preferences of the respondent, which are complex in nature and depend on subjectivity of nature. 2. Respondents are not much aware about IT technology. Relay on another advertising medium. 3. Due to unawareness in IT technology its hard to explain technology used and how it can be useful. 4. Due to unawareness some respondents gave negative response.

FINDINGS
Research finding:-

My project work was in Microlucid Technology Pvt. Ltd on Market survey, sales and promotion for Website selling I observed that respondents are not much aware about IT technology, even they dont know from where website development can be done. To increase sales volume there is need of little promotional activity to increase awareness of localities.
1. AWARENESS OF RESPONDENTS:-

Most of the respondents are not aware about website development; even they dont know companies who develop it. Large no. of Respondents are unaware about which companies work in their region.

2. LOW LEVELS OF LITERACY IN IT SECTOR:-

The survey of Nasik district shows that the most of the respondents are not much literate in IT technology; hence they didnt understand importance of it.
3. DIFFERENT WAYS OF ADVERTISING:-

There is different thinking level of the respondents some of them relay on traditional advertising medium. They are not ready for change their opinion about use of IT technology.
4. OTHER FINDINGS A) Little promotional activity will definitely help to increase sales. B) The charge taken by local developer is quite high than company rate but most of respondents are unaware about developing companies. C) Executive work in this area needs a branch office because some criminals ran after taking money so respondents are not ready to pay in advance. D) Price value affects purchasing of website at respondents end. E) Company must change his pricing structure because respondents need are totally different some want it due to rules and regulation so they are not ready to buy high rate website. While some want it for their customer they are not much bothered about it. F) Company may decide software range and website range in this area as demand of particular type is not there.

RECOMMENDATIONS
Important suggestion for Nasik :-

Regarding pricing strategy:

Company must change his pricing structure because respondents need are totally different some want it due to rules and regulation so they are not ready to buy high price website. While some want it for their customer they are not much bothered about it. Therefore besides selling same price structure Website Company varies it with quantity provided in it.
Regarding distribution strategy:

There is need of branch office in this area as some criminals ran after taking money. And some problem in communication as main branch is at long distance in Pune. It takes a long time to deliver required website of customer.
After getting order There is need of translator as local language is Marathi and respondents provide data in regional language. Regarding data collection There is problem lies between marketer and developer because of communication gap as marketing person give demonstration according to respondents need which developer fail to understand. Regarding promotional and advertising strategy: 4) Respondents visit Face to face publicity plays important in this area therefore while meeting with customer technical person will be highly beneficial for increase in awareness. 5) Advertisement

Advertisement should be flashed on Cable TV in regional language. Need of advertisement in Newspaper like Sakal, Lokmat, and prime Marathi dainik, some banners will be beneficial at prime locations of the city. Etc. 6) Demonstrations

Demonstration of already developed website will definitely help as respondents ask about previous work in this area.

Regarding segmenting market Company should segment market according to respondents need not according to content in website. Pricing strategy should match the segment demand Regarding target market:-

Company should target big educational institute by regular visits and follow ups through these small institute get automatically influenced. Focus more on city area.

CONCLUSION
Nasik district is one of the potential areas of North Maharashtra region
where many companies rise in recent years but due to technology spread it far long from getting it.

There is large market for Website selling. Company can generate sales
by proper marketing activities like advertising, sales promotion etc. In case of IT illiterate client suggestion to him by expert person is most important; it is advisable that every district have branch office this is draw back seen by researcher.

For website selling promotion strategy in a free market economy has

to be reoriented for achieving complete customer satisfaction. For improving industrial, institutional productivity software industry will have to reorient its role.
