NEW ZEALAND FARM PRODUCTION GENERAL


Area Situation The total area of New Zealand (including minor islands) is 26.8 million hectares. The main islands are located between latitudes 34 and 4 7S and from 166 to 179E longitude. Including outlying islands, New Zealands administrative boundaries are significantly larger. Approximately 1600 kilometres north to south and 450 kilometres at the widest point. New Zealand is very m ountainous with approximately one quarter of the total area below 200 metres altitude.

Distance

North Island 11.5 million ha. Mountainous area is one-tenth of total. South Island 15.0 million ha. Mountainous area is over half of total. Climate N ew Zealand national climate summary for 2010: Settled and warm. Annual mean sea level pressures were above average over the New Zealand region in 2010. The increased prevalence of anticyclones (highs) near New Zealand produced a relatively settled climate for the year overall, with average or above average annual temperatures in all regions, normal or above normal sunshine hours in most districts, and drought at either end of the year.

POPULATION (2010): New Zealands total population is estimated at 4,367,700 at 30 June 2010, an increase of 1.2 per cent over the previous 12 months. Based on 2006 Census data 14% of the population live in rural areas and 86% live in urban areas. 76% of the urban population is in the North Island.

BREEDING FLOCKS The major breed in the North Island and southern districts of the South Island is the Romney. Corriedale and Halfbred sheep are mainly found in Canterbury, Marlborough and parts of Otago. Merino sheep are predominantly farmed in the South Island high country.

WOOL
New Zealand is the third largest producer of wool on a clean basis in the world, and produces 11% of world production. The main shear generally takes place from November to January and sheep are machine shorn on approximately 45,000 stands. Merino sheep are sometimes blade shorn in cooler regions.

Wool fibre export earnings for the year ended 30 June 2010 were $552.5 million (FOB). Wool carpet and rug export receipts were $72.4 million with intermediate products (tops, yarns and sliver) and other final woollen products contributing a further $120.8 million. All wool products represented 2.1% ($745.8 million) of the total value of New Zealand merchandise exports.

Few farmers devote themselves exclusively to beef production. In general, the raising and finishing of beef cattle is carried out in conjunction with sheep farming. In addition, beef is produced from cull dairy cows and bobby calves. p = Provisional.

DAIRY PRODUCTION 2009-10 SEASON Seasonal herd test averages showed production per cow was 318 kg milk solids or 3,642 litres of milk (comprising 181 kg milk fat and 137 kg protein content). In 2009-10, 1.44 million tonnes of milk solids were processed by dairy factories. EXPORTS OF DAIRY PRODUCE

DAIRY COMPANIES There are four co-operative New Zealand dairy companies; Fonterra, Tatua, Westland and Gisborne Milk co-operative. In addition, there are three other non co-operative dairy companies exporting dairy products - New Zealand Dairies Ltd, Open Country Dairy Ltd and Synlait Milk Ltd. The largest of these companies is Fonterra which is owned by over 11,000 dairy farmers out of approximately 11,690 dairy farms. Fonterra accounts for around 95% of New Zealand dairy production. DAIRY MEAT In the year ended 30 September 2010, 1.5 million bobby calves and 0.62 million cull cows were slaughtered. In spring 2009, an estimated 0.88 million calves were retained for dairy beef production.

ARABLE
Arable farming in New Zealand is located mainly in the South Island on the plains and easier downland country. The greater portion of the area sown is in Canterbury. The following summarises the main arable production: CASH CROPS

A large percentage of pasture seeds are grown under the MAFBNZ Seed Varietal Certification Scheme administered by AsureQuality Limited. The scheme operates to ensure that cultivars of important plant species maintain their identity through successive generations of multiplication for the ultimate benefit of the end user.

PIGS
At 30 June 2010, estimated total pigs numbered 325,000. Of these 32,300 were estimated breeding sows. There were 200 Registered Pig Farms according to the New Zealand Pork Industry Board. For the year ended 30 September 2010, pig slaughter numbers were 694,137, which produced 47,081 tonnes of pig meat. The South Island accounted for 62.7% of total pig meat production. Most of the pig meat production is consumed in the local market. Total supply of pig meat in 2009-10 was 84,772 tonnes, of which 37,960 tonnes were imported in to New Zealand.

For the year ended September 2010, total deer industry exports were $280 million. Venison exports were worth $211 million, velvet export earnings totalled $31 million while co-products and other totalled $14 million. Deer hides and leather receipts were $22.7 million. Venison exports total 15,693 tonnes, of which 37% went to Germany, 17% was imported through Benelux and 7% went to France. In 2009-10 China was the largest export destination for New Zealand velvet accounting for 43% of exports, although Korea remains the largest market for the consumption of New Zealand velvet.

GOATS
A total of 82,229 farmed goats were recorded in 2009 by Statistics New Zealand. 67% of goats were in the North Island with the largest population in the Waikato region. It is estimated that two thirds of goats were on commercial Sheep and Beef farms. For the year ended September 2010, goat exports totalled $7.8 million (excludes goat dairy products). This comprised $6.9 million of goat meat, $0.5 million goat fibre and $0.4 million for skins.

FERTILISER SALES Most New Zealand soils need fertilisers - especially phosphate and sulphur - and topdressing of pastures is essential for their maintenance and productivity. Total stock units at 30 June 2010 were estimated to be 4% less than in 2000. The reduction is largely due to the decline in sheep numbers. While the stock unit is a broad measure of pasture demand, it could be argued that the stock units in 2010 were better fed and more productive than in 2000.
