Dear Friends,
The focus of this months issue is Exchange Traded Funds or ETFs as they are popularly called. With this issue we try to bring a better understanding of this relatively new investment option in India. We also intend to give you a broader perspective on the various types and benefits of ETFs. With Empower, we are in the constant endeavor of adding value to you and your performance. This month our section First Impression aims to arm you with some great presentation techniques. Delivering that perfect presentation, especially the first time often defines your performance. Follow the simple techniques mentioned inside and gear up to win over your investors. Inspiring our partners always has been our key objective and we believe nothing is more inspiring than a great success story. The inspiration stroke this time is lent by Fred Smith who got a C Minus for his project paper on overnight package delivery and soon turned the much criticized business into one of the worlds leading overnight delivery brand, Fedex. Hope you enjoy reading this issue.
Warm Regards,

Investment Outlook
Equity Investment Outlook
Indian equity markets posted modest gains over last month as evident in 3.4% and 3.3% move in the Sensex and the Nifty. Capital Goods (7.6%), FMCG (7.2%), and Banking (4.4%) outperformed the benchmarks, while Real Estate (-4.9%), Oil & Gas (-2.9%), Metals (-0.6%) and Autos (-0.5%) lagged behind. Broader market indices like the BSE-100 and BSE-200 also trailed behind, signalling the relatively weak performance of mid cap universe. Over past couple of weeks, global markets have had a change of palate savouring riskier assets. This has been brought about by (1) Greek parliaments approval for the austerity measures that the country needed to receive continued disbursements from the bailout pact agreed last year and (2) IEA members decision to release crude supplies from their strategic reserves. The later development hints towards regulatory resolve to cap unchecked rise in crude oil prices and its effect on consumers. The resurgent mood is aptly corroborated by the FII inflows into Indian markets which stood at Rs. 45.7 billion after recording outflows amounting to Rs. 66.1 billion in previous month. Over last 6 months, India has considerably underperformed the world markets, principally driven by the shift in investor focus from Emerging Markets to Developed Markets. As short-tem concerns fade, the trade might reverse soon attracting higher flows over the balance part of the calendar year. We have earlier highlighted that Indias corporate earnings estimates have been downgraded over past few months; most of these should be reflected in the H1 FY2012 numbers, including the forthcoming result season. Our views are more sanguine about the H2 FY012 earnings growth and the exit rate for FY12. This is premised on (1) inflation is likely to peak off towards year end, thus removing the pressure to tighten rates further; (2) government has started making gradual progress on policy decisions - the recent increase in administrative fuel prices, relaxation of onerous environmental norms for coal mining and discussions on the proposal to open up multi-brand retail to foreign investors; and (3) selectively, valuations have become quite cheap even though Sensex is trading in a fair value range. As market focus moves from immediate pain in growth towards medium term prospects, the multiple contraction we have witnessed over past few quarters is likely to reverse and take equity prices higher. Over the next 2-3 months, every single opportunity thrown by any adverse newsflow should be utilised to increase exposure to equity assets. We are specifically looking at increasing exposure to mid cap stocks on selective basis.

Benefits of Savings Solutions: Make Inflation work in your favour: Inflation affects your returns from any investment including mutual funds. But, in case of savings solutions, you can use it to your advantage - through indexation - which can help you reduce the amount on which you have to pay tax. You can benefit from indexation, if investing for more than 1 year. Please consult your tax advisor on how to take advantage of indexation. Aim to preserve your money: These schemes generally invest in instruments like bonds of reputed Indian companies and securities (bonds) issued by the Government of India which are considered relatively safe. Aim to provide Liquidity: If you need to withdraw your money, all you have to do is submit a redemption slip and your money is normally credited to your bank account within one working day. You may also opt for an online redemption facility offered by many fund houses for added convenience. Tax-efficient returns: You can earn returns in the form of monthly / quarterly dividends which are completely tax-free in your hands. A dividend distribution tax of 14.1625% is applicable and is deducted by the fund house. There are various savings solutions available depending on the time period that you would like to invest for:a. 1 day to 3 months b. 3 to 6 months c. 6 months to 1 year d. 1 year +

What are Tax Savings Solutions? Our Tax Savings Solutions help to reduce your tax burden and at the same time, aim to grow your money through equity investments.
Who can benefit from Tax Savings Solutions? Tax saving is important, especially when investors can save up to ` 30,900 in taxes! Section 80C of the Income Tax Act, 1961 provides options to save tax by reducing the taxable income by up to Rs. 1 lakh. But, wealth creation is also important. Isnt it? Thats why these solutions are ideal for investors who would like to create wealth along with tax saving.
Benefits of Tax Savings Solutions: Low lock-in period: Your money is locked-in for just 3 years, as against the much longer lock-in periods in other options. Potential to earn dividends: While your money is locked-in for 3 years, you may opt for the dividend option and can receive returns in the form of tax-free dividends during this time. This feature is unique only to tax saving solutions from mutual funds. Earn market linked returns: Since investments are made in stocks of Indian companies, the value of your investment moves with the stock market. Although it comes with market related risks, your money is diversified i.e. spread out across stocks of multiple companies and is being monitored by an investment expert with an aim to minimize such risks. Tax-free returns: When you withdraw your investment after 3 years, the returns are totally tax free. Yes, you save taxes on both, your initial investment and also on the returns.
The Financial Solution (Tax Saving Solution) stated above is ONLY for highlighting the many advantages perceived from investments in Mutual Funds but does not in any manner, indicate or imply, either the quality of any particular Scheme or guarantee any specific performance/returns. Tax deduction available u/s 80C of the Income Tax Act, 1961 is subject to conditions specified therein. Investors are requested to consult their tax advisor before investing for individual nature of tax benefits.

Inspiration
FredEx
When Fred Smith attended Yale University Business School, he wrote a project paper on the concept of overnight package delivery. The professor awarded Smith a C minus for it. This was because he thought the proposal had little potential as the postal industry was monopolized by the US Mail. Who would want to send a package through another courier when there was the US Mail?. Undeterred, Smith put his money where his mouth was and started Federal Express. On the first day of business, his goal was to deliver 167 packages. However, he only delivered 7, 5 of which were packages sent to him. He had belief and more so, he had perseverance. Today, Federal Express is one of the Worlds largest overnight delivery companies and more so is a pioneer.

First Impression
Effective presentations are the final step towards success, the crucial packaging of the valuable product or idea. However, this is also where most of us falter. The problem is not paltry research. Rather, it's not being able to put it across in a way that generates a 'wow' response. Even if one does not have the charm to dazzle an audience, some basic public speaking points will help in the long run. Keep it short When everyone is brimming with competitive ideas, yours is of no life-changing consequence to your boss, no matter how eureka it is to you. One has to find a middle path between matter and brevity. You want to pack in the maximum, but keep it short and crisp. Use visuals Anything that's visual holds attention. So put that AV room to use. For instance, instead of 'saying' what your consumers feel about the brand, why not have a video of your consumers talking about it. This is one place where
you can get very creative. And as they say, a picture speaks a thousand words! Talk to Foreheads You should be making an effort to speak to the whole audience, which means looking around the room and making each attendee feel as though you are speaking to them directly. If eye contact makes you even more nervous, then talk to foreheads. Nobody will really notice your lack of true connection yet you will still convey your ability to engage the entire room. Wear Comfortable Clothes Always Familiarity breeds confidence and your attire is an important part of it. Wear something that you are comfortable in. Also ensure you wear something that's not too flashy. You want the audience to pay attention at what you are saying, not what you are wearing.

Methodology of Ranking
*Value Research Ratings - Ranking Methodology and Disclaimer Value Research Fund Ratings are a composite measure of historical risk-adjusted returns. In the case of equity and hybrid funds this rating is based on the weighted average monthly returns for the last 3 and 5-year periods. Four stars indicate that a fund is in the next 22.5%, middle 35% receive three stars, the next 22.5% are assigned two stars while the bottom 10% receive one star.
