From the CEOs Desk

Dear Friends,

The focus of this months issue is Exchange Traded Funds or ETFs as they are popularly called. With this issue we try to bring a better understanding of this relatively new investment option in India. We also intend to give you a broader perspective on the various types and benefits of ETFs. With Empower, we are in the constant endeavor of adding value to you and your performance. This month our section First Impression aims to arm you with some great presentation techniques. Delivering that perfect presentation, especially the first time often defines your performance. Follow the simple techniques mentioned inside and gear up to win over your investors. Inspiring our partners always has been our key objective and we believe nothing is more inspiring than a great success story. The inspiration stroke this time is lent by Fred Smith who got a C Minus for his project paper on overnight package delivery and soon turned the much criticized business into one of the worlds leading overnight delivery brand, Fedex. Hope you enjoy reading this issue.

Warm Regards,

A. Balasubramanian Chief Executive Officer

All About Mutual Funds

Rising expenses, childrens education, unexpected emergencies and finally retirement the demands on peoples money are ever-rising. And savings alone are not enough to meet them all. Making judicious equity investments though can make their money work harder for them. However, most people are reluctant to invest as they find it very puzzling. More so, they dont have the time to monitor the stock markets. What is the way then to help you achieve your financial needs and goals? The answer is mutual funds. Here are a few things about mutual funds that you must know in order to benefit from them:
What are mutual funds? A mutual fund is a professionally managed collective investment scheme that pools money from many investors. This money is then invested in stocks, bonds, short-term money market instruments, and/or other securities. Types of mutual funds Mutual funds can broadly be classified as open ended or close ended. While open ended funds are available for subscription and repurchase on a continuous basis and do not have a fixed maturity period, close ended funds are open for subscription only during a specified period at the time of launch of the scheme and have a stipulated maturity period. They can further be classified according to the investment objective as: Growth or equity funds: The aim of growth funds is to provide capital appreciation over medium to long term. Such schemes normally invest a major part of their corpus in equities and have comparatively high risks. Debt funds: The objective of growth funds is to generate steady returns while preserving your capital. They invest only in fixed income instruments like company bonds, de bentures and government securities. Balanced funds: These funds invest in both equity and debt in varying proportions and earns regular income. So, their average returns and risks also fall somewhere in between. How do mutual funds score over equities? Unlike equity Investments, mutual fund investments do not require your clients to analyze and track companies and the ways of the market. Also they help them stay less affected by the fall in the prices of one particular stock as their returns are derived by overall performance of various stocks that the company invests in. Whats the right time to buy and sell mutual funds? The right time to buy mutual funds is when the prices of the funds are low or falling. However, the holding period should be determined by the market conditions and they should not be sold before the market turns around. In fact, a greater holding period offers greater chance to benefit. It also offers greater surety in returns. What are SIPs? A systematic investment plan allows your clients to invest in a fund at regular intervals rather than a lump sum one time amount. SIPs are based on the principle of rupee cost averaging which makes a fall in their schemes NAV work to the investors advantage. When the NAV falls because of a fall in the market, they accumulate more units at lower rates while it restrains them from going overboard in a rising market by giving them fewer units at those higher levels. Further, by staying invested for a long period of time, they profit from the appreciation equities tend to show over the long term. How do I select the right mutual funds? While choosing a mutual fund, its important to keep your objectives, risk appetite and investment budget in mind. You should also keep in mind the performance of the fund over the last couple of years and check the exit load charged by a particular scheme which is charged as a percentage of NAV and has the effect of reducing returns by that amount.

By keeping these simple things in mind, you can make mutual fund investments that work to your advantage and help in realizing your financial goals.

Investment Outlook
Equity Investment Outlook
Indian equity markets posted modest gains over last month as evident in 3.4% and 3.3% move in the Sensex and the Nifty. Capital Goods (7.6%), FMCG (7.2%), and Banking (4.4%) outperformed the benchmarks, while Real Estate (-4.9%), Oil & Gas (-2.9%), Metals (-0.6%) and Autos (-0.5%) lagged behind. Broader market indices like the BSE-100 and BSE-200 also trailed behind, signalling the relatively weak performance of mid cap universe. Over past couple of weeks, global markets have had a change of palate savouring riskier assets. This has been brought about by (1) Greek parliaments approval for the austerity measures that the country needed to receive continued disbursements from the bailout pact agreed last year and (2) IEA members decision to release crude supplies from their strategic reserves. The later development hints towards regulatory resolve to cap unchecked rise in crude oil prices and its effect on consumers. The resurgent mood is aptly corroborated by the FII inflows into Indian markets which stood at Rs. 45.7 billion after recording outflows amounting to Rs. 66.1 billion in previous month. Over last 6 months, India has considerably underperformed the world markets, principally driven by the shift in investor focus from Emerging Markets to Developed Markets. As short-tem concerns fade, the trade might reverse soon attracting higher flows over the balance part of the calendar year. We have earlier highlighted that Indias corporate earnings estimates have been downgraded over past few months; most of these should be reflected in the H1 FY2012 numbers, including the forthcoming result season. Our views are more sanguine about the H2 FY012 earnings growth and the exit rate for FY12. This is premised on (1) inflation is likely to peak off towards year end, thus removing the pressure to tighten rates further; (2) government has started making gradual progress on policy decisions - the recent increase in administrative fuel prices, relaxation of onerous environmental norms for coal mining and discussions on the proposal to open up multi-brand retail to foreign investors; and (3) selectively, valuations have become quite cheap even though Sensex is trading in a fair value range. As market focus moves from immediate pain in growth towards medium term prospects, the multiple contraction we have witnessed over past few quarters is likely to reverse and take equity prices higher. Over the next 2-3 months, every single opportunity thrown by any adverse newsflow should be utilised to increase exposure to equity assets. We are specifically looking at increasing exposure to mid cap stocks on selective basis.

Debt Investment Outlook

Growth and Inflation Outlook Though the central bank in its mid-quarter policy statement (June 16, 2011) expressed no anxiety of a gradual domestic growth slowdown, we maintain our view of weak investment sentiment amid higher cost of funds for producers and weak pick up in new project announcements. We expect a sub-8% GDP growth for FY12. Inflation is expected to remain in the 9% plus zone till October 2011, peaking out in August-September as it completely reflects the fuel price hike undertaken on June 24. Global Growth outlook The Global economy is slowing as some of the positive effects of monetary and fiscal stimulus, implemented last year, are now fading. We think the current slowdown might be more structural in nature than due to temporary factors such as the Japanese Tsunami, Oil price increases etc. Given our conservative view on Global growth in H2 2011 we also think that there is a fair chance that commodity prices have peaked in the near term. growth slows enough to prompt Fed into QE3, we will revisit our views. On the EU periphery, Time has been bought. Greece will probably fade away from the headlines for the next 3 months till the next quarterly assessment by the official lenders. The bottom-line is that its easier to approve an austerity package than to implement it. Solvency remains an issue for Greece. On the risk-reward framework, we think investors have become overly pessimistic largely due to EU periphery concerns and weak economic data and so, we think risk assets (equities, commodities) will catch a tactical bounce in the next 1-2 weeks. Longer term, we think there is more downside potential to risk assets. Banking system liquidity The month of June closed with a deficit of INR 65,000 cr. We expect the banking system liquidity to be relatively comfortable in the coming month and a half. Post advance tax payment mid September, the deficit cash levels by September-end would touch the June-end levels of INR 60,000-65,000 cr. again. Expected RBI monetary Stance The RBIs policy action to curb inflationary pressures may turn less hawkish in the coming policies (next scheduled on July 26, 2011) as we may be approaching the fag end of the tightening cycle. We would expect a peak of 8% Repo rate (another 50bps of hike), the risk to this view being a sudden shark spike in crude prices. View on Government Bonds Government securities traded in the range of 8.20-8.40 in the month of Jun 2011, however supply concerns and expectations of an eventual increase in borrowings by the Govt. of India appear to have narrowed that band to 8.30-8.40 as of now. While expectation of a pause from RBI, uncertainties in Europe, and headwinds to global growth have capped the upside in yields as of now, consistent weekly supply of SLR securities will check any unbridled rally in GoI securities and may pose the risk of eventually pressurizing yields higher. In view of this, we will continue to trade tactically in this segment. All in all we see Government finances stressed and the fiscal deficit overshooting the targets by more than 40 bps, resulting in 40k-60k of extra borrowing in the second half. The fear of higher borrowings should keep pressure on the Gsec curve though the growth inflation framework turns benign for other rate curves. We feel the RBI would be doing OMOs in the coming quarters to infuse requisite liquidity in the system and that should keep a lid on Gsec yields. View on Corporate credit and bond markets We believe that the spread between GSecs and AAA corporate bonds have peaked for this cycle. There are firm signs of slowing investment activity in the country. Even currency with public, which is a good indicator for consumption demand and real estate activity, has been growing at a slower pace (the growth has fallen from 21% in Oct 2010 to 16% in May2011). All these indicate that credit will continue to slow down over the next many months, and that has significant influence on credit spreads. As economic activity slows, we believe that spreads between AAA and lower rated papers are expected to widen even though the nominal level of lower rated corporate papers may still come off. Further, with the advent of the base rate regime, many large and mid-sized corporate have started accessing the bond markets, to avail of funds at a lower cost. This has resulted in opening up new investment avenues especially in the manufacturing sector. View on short term rates We maintain our view of the short term rates having peaked at their March 2011 levels. The expectation of weaker credit off-take in the coming months has also meant reduced rollovers of CDs in the market and hence putting a check on the hardening of rates

Tax Savings Solutions

What are Tax Savings Solutions? Our Tax Savings Solutions help to reduce your tax burden and at the same time, aim to grow your money through equity investments.

Who can benefit from Tax Savings Solutions? Tax saving is important, especially when investors can save up to ` 30,900 in taxes! Section 80C of the Income Tax Act, 1961 provides options to save tax by reducing the taxable income by up to Rs. 1 lakh. But, wealth creation is also important. Isnt it? Thats why these solutions are ideal for investors who would like to create wealth along with tax saving.

Benefits of Tax Savings Solutions: Low lock-in period: Your money is locked-in for just 3 years, as against the much longer lock-in periods in other options. Potential to earn dividends: While your money is locked-in for 3 years, you may opt for the dividend option and can receive returns in the form of tax-free dividends during this time. This feature is unique only to tax saving solutions from mutual funds. Earn market linked returns: Since investments are made in stocks of Indian companies, the value of your investment moves with the stock market. Although it comes with market related risks, your money is diversified i.e. spread out across stocks of multiple companies and is being monitored by an investment expert with an aim to minimize such risks. Tax-free returns: When you withdraw your investment after 3 years, the returns are totally tax free. Yes, you save taxes on both, your initial investment and also on the returns.

The Financial Solution (Tax Saving Solution) stated above is ONLY for highlighting the many advantages perceived from investments in Mutual Funds but does not in any manner, indicate or imply, either the quality of any particular Scheme or guarantee any specific performance/returns. Tax deduction available u/s 80C of the Income Tax Act, 1961 is subject to conditions specified therein. Investors are requested to consult their tax advisor before investing for individual nature of tax benefits.

Inspiration

FredEx
When Fred Smith attended Yale University Business School, he wrote a project paper on the concept of overnight package delivery. The professor awarded Smith a C minus for it. This was because he thought the proposal had little potential as the postal industry was monopolized by the US Mail. Who would want to send a package through another courier when there was the US Mail?. Undeterred, Smith put his money where his mouth was and started Federal Express. On the first day of business, his goal was to deliver 167 packages. However, he only delivered 7, 5 of which were packages sent to him. He had belief and more so, he had perseverance. Today, Federal Express is one of the Worlds largest overnight delivery companies and more so is a pioneer.

Effective presentations are the final step towards success, the crucial packaging of the valuable product or idea. However, this is also where most of us falter. The problem is not paltry research. Rather, it's not being able to put it across in a way that generates a 'wow' response. Even if one does not have the charm to dazzle an audience, some basic public speaking points will help in the long run. Keep it short When everyone is brimming with competitive ideas, yours is of no life-changing consequence to your boss, no matter how eureka it is to you. One has to find a middle path between matter and brevity. You want to pack in the maximum, but keep it short and crisp. Use visuals Anything that's visual holds attention. So put that AV room to use. For instance, instead of 'saying' what your consumers feel about the brand, why not have a video of your consumers talking about it. This is one place where

you can get very creative. And as they say, a picture speaks a thousand words! Talk to Foreheads You should be making an effort to speak to the whole audience, which means looking around the room and making each attendee feel as though you are speaking to them directly. If eye contact makes you even more nervous, then talk to foreheads. Nobody will really notice your lack of true connection yet you will still convey your ability to engage the entire room. Wear Comfortable Clothes Always Familiarity breeds confidence and your attire is an important part of it. Wear something that you are comfortable in. Also ensure you wear something that's not too flashy. You want the audience to pay attention at what you are saying, not what you are wearing.

Methodology of Ranking
*Value Research Ratings - Ranking Methodology and Disclaimer Value Research Fund Ratings are a composite measure of historical risk-adjusted returns. In the case of equity and hybrid funds this rating is based on the weighted average monthly returns for the last 3 and 5-year periods. In the case of debt funds this rating is based on the weighted average weekly returns for the last 18 months and 3-year periods and in case of short-term debt funds - weekly returns for the last 18 months. These ratings do not take into consideration any entry or exit load. Each category must have a minimum of 10 funds for it to be rated. Effective, July 2008, we have put an additional qualifying criteria, whereby a fund with less than Rs 5 crore of average AUM in the past six months will not be eligible for rating. Five-stars indicate that a fund is in the top 10% of its category in terms of historical risk-adjusted returns. Four stars indicate that a fund is in the next 22.5%, middle 35% receive three stars, the next 22.5% are assigned two stars while the bottom 10% receive one star. The number of schemes in each category is mentioned along side the categories name.
