PRONOMI PERSONALI COMPLEMENTO I pronomi personali complemento in inglese sono solo sette e corrispondono a tutti i venti pronomi personali complemento italiani. Es. Do you visit him on Sundays? Can you give it to me? SOGGETTO I you he she it we you they I pronomi personali complemento:

Give Ann the book./Give the book to Ann./Give her the book. / Give the book to her.

Im Youre He, she, its Were Youre Theyre Im not You arent He, she, it isnt We arent You arent They arent am I? are you? is he, she, it? are we? are you? are they?

Es. Are you optimistic? Yes, I am. Are you in love? No, I'm not

avere torto avere sonno avere fretta avere paura avere vergogna
per esprimere 1'et usando la sequenza "soggetto + be + et + years old" (years old spesso omesso). Es. My sister is 12 years old.

SIMPLE PRESENT
Es. I eat three times a day. Water boils at 100. The train for London leaves at 12.
FORMA AFFERMATIVA
I eat You eat He/she/it eats We eat You eat They eat In alcuni casi, nella terza persona singolare dei verbi, invece della desinenza s troviamo es. Quindi incontrerai frasi del tipo: Mary watches TV; He goes to school; Robert passes his examinations; Dad washes the car; He fixes the picture with a nail; The bee buzzes round our house; She studies French, ma He plays tennis.
DOES: Do you know her? I do not/dont eat You do not/dont eat
He, she, it does not/doesnt eat
Do I eat? Do you eat? Does he, she, it eat? Do we eat? Do you eat? Do they eat?
15
RISPOSTE BREVI
Yes, I / you do. Yes, he / she / it does. Yes, we / you / they do. No, I / you dont. No, he / she / it doesnt. No, we / you / they dont.
Es. We often go to the cinema on Mondays. Es. He never watches TV after dinner / She's never late for school . Ever equivale all'italiano "mai", nel senso di "qualche volta". Do you ever go on holiday abroad? No, I never do, unfortunately.
Es. He often goes there. / Does he often go there? / He doesn't often go there. / We can always do that. /We seldom have dinner at 7. / I have always liked History. Es. She is not usually late for school. / He is usually late for school Precedono sempre l'ausiliare nelle short answers. Es. Do you often watch this programme? / No, we rarely do. / Is he usually late for school? / Yes, he usually is. Es. Sometimes I listen to the radio news./ I listen to the radio news sometimes. Nota le seguenti espressioni: once a day / once a week / twice a day / once a month / once a year ma: three times a day / four times a day.

19
WHOSE + VERBO + DIMOSTRATIVO + SOGGETTO Es. Whose is this car? Is it Tom's?. WHOSE + SOGGETTO + VERBO + DIMOSTRATIVO Es. Whose car is this?

Tuttavia i pronomi e gli aggettivi personali e possessivi che ad essi si riferiscono sono spesso al plurale (they, them, their). Es. Everybody goes home at five. / Nobody saw him leave. - non vengono usati davanti ad of ed in questo caso vengono sostituiti dagli aggettivi indefiniti: some, any, none, all. Fa eccezione everyone. Es. None of my students is absent. / Some of them protested. / Everyone of you is tired. - i composti con -where non sono mai preceduti da preposizioni di luogo, ad eccezione di from. Es. I can't find it anywhere. / Who sent this fax? It must have come from somewhere! Inoltre i composti di any: s - se usati nelle frasi affermative, esprimono indeterminatezza e corrispondono agli indefiniti italiani "chiunque, qualunque, qualsiasi cosa, dovunque, in qualunque luogo. "Es. Anybody could do that. / Anywhere you go, you make friends. Nobody can help me. / Is there anything for me? No, nothing. Es. Somebody's/ Someone's car is parked in front of my garage. Es. I don't like tea. Isn't there anything else?
25
Es. A / the / my book is on the desk. / There are three/some oranges in the fridge. Es. My mother uses oil instead of butter. / Honesty is very important to me. - Possono essere accompagnati dagli aggettivi indefiniti (some, any, no). Es. Can I have some sugar, please? (a piece of la numerazione pi generica). Es. a piece of cake / two litres of wine / a glass/ bottle of water / a can or tin of beer or coke / three kilos of sugar. Es. Can I have two teas and a coffee, please? I seguenti sostantivi in inglese, a differenza dell'italiano, non sono numerabili, e i verbi e i pronomi ad essi riferiti sono sempre al singolare. advice consiglio / consigli information informazioni business affari luggage bagagli furniture mobilio / mobili money soldi / denaro hair capelli news notizie homework compito / compiti shopping spesa / compere housework lavori di casa spaghetti spaghetti
IMPERATIVO
In inglese, come in italiano, usiamo l'imperativo per dare comandi, indicazioni, istruzioni, per fare inviti, richieste e proposte. In inglese, tuttavia, a differenza dell'italiano, il tono di comando dell'imperativo pu6 risultare poco cortese; quindi, per attenuarlo, si pu far ricorso: all'intonazione della voce, a please, oppure agli ausiliari modali come can, could, will ecc. Es. Open the door! / Shut the window. please! / Can you pass me the salt?
AFFERMATIVO
Come here! Lets (Let us) go in!
NEGATIVO
Don't (Do not) come here again! Don't let us go in/Let's not go in.
Open the door! Es. Let's watch the film!
26
Es. Do not (Don't) go! / Do not (Don't) let's look at the presents now! / Let's not look at the presents now! Es. Close the window, please. - consigliare, avvertire. Es. Don't be late! / Mind the step! - invitare, fare un augurio. Es. Come to my party. / Have a good trip! - dare istruzioni e indicazioni. Es. Dial the number / Go over the bridge, then turn left. - ordinare, proibire. Es. Shut up! / Don't stand in the way. Es. Let's go out for a walk.
Es. Come and watch this programme with me! (Brit. Engl.) / Come watch this program with me! (Amer. Engl.)
27
Es. BE travel -> travelling /AE -> traveling. La forma in ing usata: nelle forme progressive: Jane is writing = Jane sta scrivendo; per esprimere unattivit: We go skiing every winter = Andiamo a sciare ogni inverno; come sostantivo: Reading is my favorite hobby = La lettura il mio passatempo preferito; dopo alcuni verbi come like (piacere), hate (odiare), enjoy (divertirsi), love (amare), mind (dispiacersi): I like watching TV = Mi piace guardare la TV ; dopo le preposizioni: Karen is good at dancing = Karen brava a ballare

FORMA
INTERROGATIVA,
Es. My friends went by car and I went by train.

Es. We are in the twentyfirst century. / Christmas is on December 25th. Es. I am more relaxed than him). + -er 1 termine di paragone + verbo + THAN + 2 termine di paragone. more + agg. Es. France is bigger than England / New York is more modern than Rome.

Bob is the most ambitious of my school friends. / It is the oldest building in Boston. / It is the hottest place on Earth. / Peter is the tallest boy in the class. / This is the least crowded camping site in the area. - da una frase relativa. Es. He is the stingiest man (that) I know / This airfare is the least expensive that I've seen.
Es. She is the richest woman in town. / He is my best friend

Could / Couldnt
Risposte brevi
Ad una richiesta fatta con can / could non si risponde " Yes, I can ", ma con una serie di frasi fatte, come per esempio: " Yes, certainly / Yes, of course" (formali) e "Sure / O. K. " (informali). Es. Could you please close the window? Yes, certainly. / Can you turn down the stereo? Sure. "I'm sorry I can't / I'm sorry but Im busy today". Es. Can you take me to the airport? / I'm sorry but I'm busy the whole day. Anche may e might esprimono il verbo "potere" e si usano per indicare possibilit o probabilit che qualcosa avvenga. Es. It may rain. He can pass the exam. = Pu passare lesame. (quasi certamente lo passa) He may pass the exam. = Pu passare lesame. (ha qualche possibilit di passarlo) He might pass the exam. = Potrebbe passare lesame.

Es. May I make a phone call? Yes, that's fine. / Do You mind if I make a phone call? No, that's fine. Es. Can I close the door? (informale) / Could I close the door? (cortese) / May (Do you mind if) I close the door? (molto formale). Es. May I telephone from here? No, I'm sorry, you can't. Per esprimere i tempi mancanti di can e may quando si chiede o si concede un permesso, si usa il verbo to be allowed to; si usa not to be allowed to quando si rifiuta un permesso a causa di circostanze esterne. To be allowed to pu essere usato anche al posto di can e may e in questo caso esprime maggiore formalit. Es. Smoking is not allowed in the library.

PRESENT PERFECT
Es. I've just had my exam results. Il Present Perfect si forma con l'ausiliare to have + il participio passato del verbo. Es. I have sent a fax. - Nella forma interrogativa have/ has precede il soggetto. Es. Have you spoken to her? - Nella forma negativa have / has seguito da not. Es. She has not heard the evening news. Si usa l'ausiliare to have anche con quei verbi che in italiano hanno l'ausiliare "essere" come il verbo to be e i verbi intransitivi. Es. She has been ill. / Have they gone to London? Es. I've lost my gloves and now I'm cold. Es. They've just arrived. - in un arco di tempo non del tutto trascorso, con le espressioni di tempo come this morning, this week ecc. Es. I've worked too much this week. Es. Have you ever won a sports competition? Es. I have never ridden a motorcycle. Es. Have you read this book yet? / I haven't read it yet. / Haven't they arrived yet? Le espressioni di tempo indefinito come in the past, before, recently, lately vanno generalmente in fondo alla frase. Es. She hasn't been here in the past. Nota che il verbo go ha due participi passati: gone to e been to (vedi gli esempi). He's gone to London. He's staying near Trafalgar Square. / He's been to London. Now he's at home.

Non si usa la forma progressiva con i verbi di stato (to be), di percezione (to hear, to see ecc.), di sentimento (to love, to hate) e nel le f rasi negative.

(azione completamente passata) When John arrived I was having breakfast. (azione in corso rispetto ad un'altra azione interamente compiuta) While I was having breakfast, I was listening to the news. When John arrived, I greeted him. (due azioni successive interamente compiute nel passato.)
