Sh!monoki, Tobota, Wekamatsu. Ohofu Onoda, UC., landa, Nakatsu.
Bofu and TOkuyama, The first 6 DamlId form one of the major indu.trial
centers in Japan proper. This center includesl the largest plants
prOducing pig iron, ingot, and rolled steel in the Japanese Empire;
important plants producing alumina, heavy industrial chemicals, and
semi_finished iron and steel products; and a large part of the Shi_
koku coal fields, the most important in Japan, The area has some
plants manufacturing machine tools, machinery parts, and finished
equipment of various kinds, but its importance lies in tbs
tact that it furnishes a major part of the coal. iron. steel, semi-
finished iron and steel, and other basic materials for further pro-
cessing in the districts in central Honshu. Shimono_
seki is also a major transportation centor, tho terminus of the
2 costal rail line connecting with central Honshu and the terminus
of the importQnt railraod tunnel under the Strait of MOji. A recent
concentration of war industry is reported at lanada, and reported
improvement to the harbor at Chofu may indiCate war industries there.
is an important naval fueling port; portions of the Japanese
fleet 1101"9 observed there after the Carrier Task FOrGe attack. on the
Inland Sea on 22-25 March 194.5.
(3) Partial blockade of the Horoshima and Kobo-Osaka
