- 12
(b) Target 1547 is a primary radar target. It
is next to the city or Meaabi aDd lies close to the coastline.
The assembly area is in the Tosa 'Jan l1bi ch has good checkpoints
to position the aircraft in the event of cloudy conditions. The
LP. is on A'II'aji ~ l m a with the axis paralleling the western
shoreline. The approach is fran water to land and radar releases
should be excellent-. Direct synchronous banbing caD be used very
effectively on this target.
(c) Target 263A is a good rEdar target.. It is
located on the prominent portion of lard which extends into the
Osaka Wan. On the radar scope this target area shows up as a
separate distinctive return. This target is very good for a
direct synchronous radar release.. The I.B. 18 also very good
from a radar standpaint.. It is located at 341bN - 1350330E
ani can be easily distinguished.
(d) Target 362. the Osaka Arsenal. is set up
for radar bombing even though it does not stand out as a separate
signal on the P.P.I. For this target an o1'fset aiming point gas
selected to be used. with prespective chart offset synchronous
bombing. '1'be rate ;rill be killed. on the offset aiming point
(Which is lOCated on the coastline) and the banbardier was to
roll in the extra units of tangency equal to the offset dist3nce,.
The procedure was used on the previous incendiary attack in the
same area and had fair results. The I.P. will be the same as
for target 26311.
(e) Targets 240/1833. 196. lCfl are not
considered as radar targets. The I .. P. for 240/1833 is on Hilta Ko
at 351630N .. 1]60l00E and is a good radar :checkpoint. Target 240/
1833 does not shou up as (l sharp r3dar return. The I.P. for 1<]6
and 197 is one mile north of Hachiman.. These t\70 targets are
small t1ll!'gets in burned out 1Ihgoya and c3.nnot be located by radar.
Therefore. the city of Tsu was designed as the prim:lry radar for
targets 240/1833. 196 and 197.
(f) Target 1729 is located. on the p e n i n ~ m l a
south of Nagpya jutting out into the Ise-9an. Its ideal location
makes it an excellent radar tar",;et and can be easily banbed by
the direct synchronous technique.. 71i th an I.P. on Bina Xc all
operators should have no difficUlty in setting up course and
locating the tarBet.
(g) Target 2040 was also set up 8S a primary
radar target. Although this tar..;et does not show up as a
separate return it was belieTed that it can be bombed by means
of several good referQ:nce points. Fran the I.P 3509N _ 1360.5]:.
the course passes over the bridge on the Kiso-Gawa. The coast-
line at target 194 can be used as a reference point for checking
rate and releasing the bombs. In this way. rate and course can
be set up very easily.
(5) Radar Counter 1&lasures; It was planned to D/F
enemy radars and to conduct a saneral search in the 20-.3000 megacycle
reBion. Electronic jammers ware to be employed to barrage: the 72-
84 megacycle and 190-210 megacycle e n ~ radar frequencies. Spot
jamning \7as to be conducted to jam any ,gun-laying signals appear-
ing outside the barrage. The recording of enemy ccmnunications
was to be continUed.

Airfields: Suzuka airfield nBS reported by one gr'oup as

Since reports from higher headquarters indicate that &'zuka is primarily
a trainer field while /JJcenogahara; 20 mles farther sooth is an
important combat field, the later is believed to have been mistaken
for Suzuka. Both fields are on the western shore of Ise nan. and the

12 Remarks I
On this escort mission the reluctance of the to
seod up his fighter forces when an overcast is present over the target
area J1as again demonstrated. Similiar weather conditions have been
encountered on five of this command's eisht previouB VIR escort missions,
and in every case enemy interception has been light This enemy
practice probably is based on the assumption, first, that bombing
accuracy 11111 be low ovor heavily clouded targets aoo, second, that
the possibilities of interception under such weather conditions do '
not justify the expenditure of gasoline and uear and tear on planes,
both ot which are critical considerations for the Jap Air Force.
On this mission only four enem;y planes were sighted above
20,000 feet and these were observed passing several miles to the north
at 30,000 feet over the Osaka area. Four Georges were sighted overthe
Nagoya area at 20;000 feet and the other enemy planes, Zekes. Tojos,
ToD,ys and Georges. ab6ut 40 altogether. 'were sighted at altitudes ot
10.000 to 17,000 feet, all unaggressive. and most ot them too distant
for interception by our fighters. Only one enemy was observed to
begin an attack on a 5-29 and he WaB turned avay.
Th(l main portion ot tbe fighter torce stayed on top 6r
the cloud cover the bombers entered the overcast 2.000 to 3,000
feat Through occasional breaks in the clouds the bombers could
be from time to time singly and in small groups on a variety of
headings going t(r.lard the targets in the Nagoya area. 'In this area
about 10 per cent of tbe fiGhter torce dorm to 16,000 feet and
belOQ to intercept occasional onemy planes observed through openings
in the eloudsl patrols qere then at those lahar altitudes.
Tactics used bythe onemy usually consisted ot sharp
breaks to the right and left, diving spirals, and split osseSl One
Tojo ';las tollotTed through n olimbing turn.mth the P-5l closing to

hits on a GeorB in a spiraling dive uhich began at 19,000' and
continued to 16,000'. The pilot then had to pull out duo to canproSAi-
