YWCA Hartford Region is stronger than ever. In 2010, we did more than just endurewe deeply touched the lives of the people we serve. As the economy continues to struggle, disparities in education, health care and the changing job market have made our purposeour missioneven more relevant and meaningful. Despite these economic challenges, our financial picture continues to improve as we prepare to launch new programs with a focus on racial justice and economic empowerment. we are looking ahead and ready to face the future. In 2010, we increased our financial stabilityallowing us to achieve many successes. We expanded advocacy efforts with programs centered on racial justice, including a Racial Justice Employee Education Program to ensure that our staff is prepared to live our mission. We have experienced continued success in our programs and services with strong enrollment in child care and a crowd of 1,500 at our 15th annual In the Company of Women Luncheon. Many more great things lay ahead. our plan for the future is our mission in action: A continued commitment to racial justice New economic empowerment program for women to assure family economic security Continued expansion of our child care programs Increased collaboration with our community supporters in the non-profit, government and corporate sectors We have a legacy in the Hartford area community. As the first community social service agency in Hartford and the third oldest YWCA in the country, we are determined to continue the legacy as we evolve to meet the changing needs of our community. tara is on her way

Tara always wanted to succeed but wasnt sure what success might mean, especially given her shyness. She attended A. I. Prince Technical High School, and, as a senior, Tara became involved in the Young Womens Leadership Corps (YWLC). It was a wonderful, spectacular experience, Tara said. With the help of her experiences at YWLC, she is on her way to a bright and fulfilling future. She is prepared to start college this fall to pursue a career in broadcast journalismknowing she can succeed. It is not easy to be a young woman in a complicated worldespecially when that world includes an inner city high school. Many teens face difficult challenges including low self-esteem, poverty and low academic achievement. The young women learn how to positively interact with their peers and develop leadership skills. One accomplishment for Tara was that she developed a positive attitude and now thinks of herself as a leader. One day, when Tara was mocked by another female student about her appearance, she applied what she learned in a YWLC workshop that focused on the stereotypical portrayal of young women in the media. Rather than losing control, she was able to deal with the situation using her words, not her fists, while practicing positive social skills. As a result, she avoided a fight and the inevitable school suspension. While in YWLC, Tara set several goals and developed action plans. She is most proud that she became more organized and is now able to get things done on time. YWLC staff and workshop presenters did more than just encourage participants to set goals; as Tara said, YWLC taught me to set goals I can live up to. In YWLC, participants develop effective communication skills, including public speaking. Tara, like most people, was nervous the first time she was asked to speak before a group, but she is nervous no more. Now, public speaking is all I want to do, she said.

The speakers and trips were great, Tara said. One of those trips was exceptionally important: the YWCAs 2010 In the Company of Women Luncheon. Taras new confidence led her to make connections with several influential women, including the keynote speaker, NPRs Michele Norris. Tara joined other young women for a special Creating Opportunities forum at the luncheon where she met Sarah French, news anchor/reporter for FOX 61, and participated in a discussion about journalism. As a result, Tara wants to prepare for a career in communication or broadcast journalism. She will start her education in the fall of 2011 at Manchester Community College and plans to attend Southern Connecticut State University for her junior and senior years. One of my goals is to come back as a speaker at YWLC, she added. So the shy, sometimes tentative young woman from an inner city high school in Hartford is stronger, more confident and determined to meet her goalswherever they take her.

preparing young women for the future
YWCA believes that every woman should have the opportunity to succeed. The Young Womens Leadership Corps empowers young women to succeed by focusing on personal leadership, career readiness and financial capability. Participants enjoy activities including yoga, horseback riding, community service and college tours. This approach helps prepare young women for education after high school and economic self-sufficiency as an adult. Young women leave YWLC with new self-confidenceready to face the future.

committed to social justice and lasting change

Stand Against Racism is an annual event that enlightens people about racism and its effects ranging from issues of economic disparities to racial slurs. The event also celebrates the richness of diversity. Each year, people across the Hartford area unite and pledge to rid our society of racial disparitiescreating lasting change for a just society.

providing a stable future with quality child care

Convenient, affordable, quality child care is our goal. YWCA gives parents peace of mind by assuring that their children are in good hands with dedicated and trained staff in programs where children learn and have fun. Early Learning Centers offer quality child care for infants, toddlers and preschoolers for families with low to moderate incomes in racially diverse communities. YWCAs Early Learning Centers prepare children for kindergarten with activities that stimulate physical, mental, social and emotional development. Families are engaged in their childrens learning to improve academic success providing a stable future. Programs are located in Hartford, East Hartford and West Hartford.

YW Kidslink, for students in kindergarten through 5th grade, is a before- and after-school child care program that offers creative activities for children. YW Kidslink programs keep kids safe, improve academic success and relieve the stresses on working families. Children also learn the values of diversity and respect for others. The program is offered in Bolton, Rocky Hill, West Hartford and Wethersfield.

helping people make the most of their tax refund

YWCA participates in the Volunteer Tax Assistance Program (VITA), which provides free tax preparation for those with low to moderate income. Because of the complexity of the IRS tax forms and eligibility requirements, Earned Income Tax Credits (EITC) often go unclaimed. Community volunteers sponsored by YWCA Hartford Region are certified to prepare basic tax returns.

The annual Money Conference for Women gives women the power to prosper. The free conference addresses the unique financial challenges women face in their work and personal lives. YWCA gives women the tools to succeed by focusing on money management, and investment retirement strategiesallowing them to achieve financial well-being.

securing a stable futureand a warm bed

Women at risk for homelessness turn to YWCA for emergency shelter at Soromundi Commons. Soromundi Commons is an innovative supportive housing facility managed in collaboration with Chrysalis Center, Inc. It provides emergency shelter, transitional housing and affordable permanent housing. This award-winning model offers a continuum of services on-site including case management, job counseling, health care and a community learning centerhelping people stabilize their future.

a look ahead
Teens as Successful Parents (TSP) will provide support to teen parents and their children to break the cycle of poverty. The program will collaborate with area high schools to assure that teen mothers graduate from high school ready for college and a career while they learn to be good parents. TSP will operate in Manchester and East Hartford. The Young Womens Leadership Corps (YWLC) will broaden its focus to enrich the lives of young women. YWLCs new focus will meld personal growth, career exploration and readiness, and financial literacy. The program will prepare young women to further their education beyond high school and build an economically secure future. YWCA will broaden its commitment to economic empowerment of women with a new program designed to support women as they pursue the education necessary for a healthcare career that will provide economic security for their families. This program is designed for lowincome women with a high school diploma or GED who are ready to further their education. In collaboration with local community colleges, the program will help women navigate the financial and personal challenges of obtaining an education and embarking on a new career. A Racial Justice Employee Education Program will enhance employee knowledge and understanding of racism and how to become an antiracist advocate. This program recognizes that racial justice and advocacy must begin with usat our core. This program includes a choice of training activities, books, films and community activities. The Elmwood Early Learning Center in West Hartford will be expanding its child care services to include a new infant care program and expanded pre-school enrollment. The center will also be building a new playground. This expansion exemplifies YWCAs commitment to quality and affordable care.
