God made man and woman in His image, in the Imago Dei. He made us perfectly. He designed us with one goal: to worship Him. We chose to sin and that marred our ability to be image bearers. God had to send Jesus to remedy this sin. Jesus lived a perfect life, died on a cross for our sins, and rose from the dead three days later. We can now have a relationship with God again and do what we were created to dogive glory to God.

Dear Sunday School Teacher, Your ministry as a teacher for our Lord has eternal value! When we view our ministry in light of eternity, we see its importance and the privilege that God has entrusted to us. In Psalm 78, the Bible also reminds us of this great calling: One generation commending the Gospel to the next. Treasuring Christ Curriculum: The ministry resource that you hold in your hand is produced and shaped by the local churchThe Bride of Christ. We have three primary strategies that guide us. First, we desire to produce a Gospel-centered curriculum that allows every child, babies to high school students, to study the same Scripture passage each week. Second, we seek to equip parents to thrive in their God-given role as their childs primary discipler. We want this resource, therefore, to connect the church and the home by providing the Connecting Church and Home resource within the curriculum. Third, we want to respond to the desperate need for curriculum resources around the world. We desire to bless the nations with a tool that will help them reach the world with the Gospel of Christ. Quarter One: God on Display Every relationship begins with an introduction. God introducing Himself to us is the heartbeat of this study. God on Display is a major theme that runs throughout all of Scripture. Gods desire to have communion with those He created is seen from cover to cover of the Bible. In the first few pages, we see God communing in the Garden of Eden with Adam and Eve. The theme of communion continues to be seen through the role of the Old Testament tabernacle and temple. In the New Testament, God became incarnate in Jesus, God with us. After Jesus, the Father gives the Holy Spirit to believers and institutes the Church. Fellowship in the Church breeds community, both with God and others made in His likeness. As believers, we are guaranteed that we will spend eternity in communion with God, dwelling in His presence. God is on display: everywhere; in the past, present and future; and in our lives as believers. Let us live continually to display Gods greatness and love.

Enter the story Money. Something we cant live without. Many of us could probably use a little more of it. Few of us have everything we could want and more. We spend it, give it, invest it, lose it and waste it. Currency used to be chickens, cows, goats, eggs, food, etc. People bartered with what they had. Nowadays people will take cash, a check, or allow you to use your charge card. There are television shows entirely devoted to the stock markets.

When we look at the heavens,

the moon and stars that God has put in place, it would surely seem that this is where we see the greatest display of Gods life and character. But it is not so! No, greater than the stars, the moon, the mountain ranges, the oceans, or anything else is manhuman beings who have been made to display more of what God is like than anything else does in all of creation. Dr. Bruce Ware, Big Truths for Young Hearts, pg. 82

The God of Genesis is the

Creator, bringing order out of chaos, calling life into being by His word, making Adam from earths dust and Eve from Adams rib. And He is Lord of all that He has made. J. I. Packer, Knowing God, pg. 84

One fascinating aspect about money is the engraving on the coin or the print on the bill. Who picks whose portrait goes on the different currency? What did these former leaders have to do to get their faces on items so fixed in our society? Washington, Lincoln, Jefferson, Sacagewea and many others are forever imprinted on the currency of America. Other countries have their leaders and national monuments on their currency as well. I enjoy collecting coinage and paper money from the countries I visit, even though it will never be of assistance to me at my bank. It gives me a piece of that particular countrys history.

Just as currency bears an image, so do we. We bear a more important image. We, as human beings, both male and female, were made in the image of the Almighty God who created the entire universe with His spoken word. To be made in the image of God is the Imago Dei, a Latin term meaning the image of God. God made us in His image, to reflect and bear His image. Only one part of creation had the hands-on approach by the Creator. He spoke the rest of creation into being. God formed man out of dust and took a rib of man to form woman. But we are more than little dust people. We have been made into Gods image. What a great honorthat God would choose man to bear His image, to be like Him.

The Pinnacle of Creation

Genesis 1:26-2:25

genesis 1:26-2:25: Then God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth. So God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. And God blessed them. And God said to them, Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth. And God said, Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit. You shall have them for food. And to every beast of the earth and to every bird of the heavens and to everything that creeps on the earth, everything that has the breath of life, I have given every green plant for food. And it was so. And God saw everything that He had made, and behold, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day. Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. And on the seventh day God finished His work that He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work that He had done. So God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it God rested from all His work that He had done in creation. These are the generations of the heavens and the earth when they were created, in the day that the LORD God made the earth and the heavens. When no bush of the field was yet in the land and no small plant of the field had yet sprung upfor the LORD God had not caused

it to rain on the land, and there was no man to work the ground, and a mist was going up from the land and was watering the whole face of the groundthen the LORD God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature. And the LORD God planted a garden in Eden, in the east, and there He put the man whom He had formed. And out of the ground the LORD God made to spring up every tree that is pleasant to the sight and good for food. The tree of life was in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. A river flowed out of Eden to water the garden, and there it divided and became four rivers. The name of the first is the Pishon. It is the one that flowed around the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold. And the gold of that land is good; bdellium and onyx stone are there. The name of the second river is the Gihon. It is the one that flowed around the whole land of Cush. And the name of the third river is the Tigris, which flows east of Assyria. And the fourth river is the Euphrates. The LORD God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it. And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, You may surely eat of every tree of the garden, but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die. Then the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him. Now out of the ground the LORD God had formed every beast of the field and every bird of the heavens and brought them to the man to see what he would call them. And whatever the man called every living creature,

that was its name. The man gave names to all livestock and to the birds of the heavens and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper fit for him. So the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. And the rib that the LORD God had taken from the man He made into a woman and brought her to the man. Then the man said, This at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man. Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed.

Man and woman were made to be in relationship with God, with creation and with others (Genesis 2:7-25): Relationship with god (Genesis 2:15). God puts Adam in the Garden of Eden and converses with him. Man should have felt humbled as he conversed with the very One who had created him; he had a direct connection with the God of the universe. This is carried throughout the Old Testament, as God talks with different prophets and other men. We see it in the New Testament as God talks to man through His Son, Jesus. We see this in the early church and in modern times through the ministry of the Holy Spirit. One important way we are in relationship with God is that He has written eternity on mans heart (Ecclesiastes 3:11). God is eternal; He made us. We bear His image in that we were created for eternity. This theme of man being eternal is continued throughout Scripture.

God has placed man into a

Relationship with creation. God gave us dominion over the rest of creation (Genesis 1:26, 28; 2:15-20). Adam was given the responsibility to name the animals, livestock, plants, etc. How did he come up with hippopotamus or skunk or dandelion? And whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name (v. 19b). This special authority should not give man and woman room for boasting, but instead should only point us to the One who has dominion over all things.

There are two key implications from this order of the making of man and woman by God: Man and woman are made equal in worth (in their nature and being) because their worth is based upon their being made in the image of God. They share in the uniqueness of bearing the image of God (Genesis 1:27). Man and woman are made to have different functions. Man was made first, which sets the tone for his leadership in dominion over creation and in relationship with the woman. Woman was made out of the man, to be a helper suitable for him (Genesis 2:18).

Relationship with others. The foundational relationship God set up for mankind is the one of marriage. As Adam was naming the animals that God had created, he came to a point when he realized that there was not a creature like him. God had a solution to that unsatisfied desire. He caused Adam to go into a deep sleep and performed the Bibles first surgery. Eve was formed from Adams rib. When Adam awoke, he spoke the Bibles first poem: This at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man (Genesis 2:23). The first marriage happened right there in the garden (Genesis 2:24-25).

Gospel Truths About God

gOd Is ThREE In OnE. We have established the fact that God is one God. That is true. In the first verse of the Bible, a plural form of God is used, Elohim. In the verses found in our lesson this week, God refers to Himself in the plural form, in conversation with other members of the Trinity.

We were created as persons by

Gospel Truths About Man

Man was created by the eternal God to be in a relationship with Him. Man tainted that relationship all too soon. Man decided to go his own way and not listen to or adhere to Gods perfect plan.

Gospel Truths About Redemption

Man was not content with only having dominion over creation. Man wanted Gods complete dominion; he wanted to be in charge of all things. Therefore, we see the grand narrative for mans redemption has begun. The continual theme of redemption runs throughout Scripture. Man and woman were made perfect in the image of the Creator. However, man and woman would sin, thereby needing to be rescued by their loving Creator.

desire of those who fear Him; He also hears their cry and saves them. The Lord preserves all who love Him, but all the wicked He will destroy. My mouth will speak the praise of the Lord, and let all flesh bless His holy name forever and ever. Ecclesiastes 3:9-15: What gain has the worker from his toil? I have seen the business that God has given to the children of man to be busy with. He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also, He has put eternity into mans heart, yet so that he cannot find out what God has done from the beginning to the end. I perceived that there is nothing better for them than to be joyful and to do good as long as they live; also that everyone should eat and drink and take pleasure in all his toilthis is Gods gift to man. I perceived that whatever God does endures forever; nothing can be added to it, nor anything taken from it. God has done it, so that people fear before Him. That which is, already has been; that which is to be, already has been; and God seeks what has been driven away. 1 Corinthians 15:20-28: But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. For as by a man came death, by a man has come also the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive. But each in his own order: Christ the firstfruits, then at His coming those who belong to Christ. Then comes the end, when He delivers the kingdom to God the Father after destroying every rule and every authority and power. For He must reign until He has put all His enemies under His feet. The last enemy to be destroyed is death. For God has put all things in subjection under His feet. But when it says, all things are put in

subjection, it is plain that He is excepted who put all things in subjection under Him. When all things are subjected to Him, then the Son Himself will also be subjected to Him who put all things in subjection under Him, that God may be all in all. Ephesians 2:8-10: For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. Ephesians 5:22-33: Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, His body, and is Himself its Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands. Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave Himself up for her, that He might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, so that He might present the church to Himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish. In the same way husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ does the church, because we are members of His body. Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh. This mystery is profound, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church. However, let each one of you love his wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband.

God had to send Jesus to remedy this sin. Jesus lived a perfect life, died on a cross for our sins, and rose from the dead three days later. We can now have a relationship with God again and do what we were created to dogive glory to God.

Bible story Time: (30 minutes) Teacher Note: Read Genesis 1:26-2:25 out of the Bible or let the students take turns reading the verses in the passage. Encourage them to think through the following ideas based on Scripture and how Scripture is the truth (instead of what we see in culture). From this passage, we learn much about Gods design for authority and relationship. Divide the students into groups and ask one group to study Gods design for authority and the other to focus on His design for relationships. Each group would then present their findings.

Authority
god has ultimate authority as the One who created everything. He gave Adam and Eve dominion over the earth. This is one way that man reflects the image of the Creator. We are to have dominion over the earth, take care of it, be fruitful and multiply. We are to reflect that gracious dominion as well, not dominating. To dominate has been given a negative connotation in todays society; however, the command was given for our good and blessing. god has given us his authority. Gods authority is spoken to us in the Bible. The Bible is the very breath of God and is true and will never lead us in the wrong direction. Colossians 3:1-4: If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. relAtionships
We have been made to have relationship with god and mankind. First and foremost, we have been made to have a relationship with the God of the universe. He created all things. He chose to make us in His image so we could have a relationship with Him. In this Treasure Story, we also find truths about the relationship we have with the opposite sex. god made us male and female. God made you and He made you in His imagethis is not up for societys discussion or debate. If you choose to live outside of this God-given authority, that isnt a choice, it is sin. Gods authority is lasting and true. It is right for every question we have. There is no alternative that isnt sinful. god made men and women with equal worth but different functions. Both male and female are equal in their nature; both have the same worth in Gods sight. However, man has authority, especially in the marriage relationship. This is not to be seen as domination but as selfless love and sacrifice. (Remember that a dating relationship is not a marriage. However, the male in the relationship should lead by humility and God-passion to be himself growing toward Christ and wanting to run hard after God, treasuring Christ above all else.) God made the woman to be mans helper. genesis 2:18-25: Then the Lord God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him. Now out of the ground the Lord God had formed every beast of the field and every bird of the heavens and brought them to the man to see what he would call them. And whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name.

Genesis 1:26-2:25

However, let each one of you love his wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband.

discussion Questions: What are the implications in our society of homosexuality, cohabitation and TV shows that promote glamorous but sinful lives? Ask the students to state the problem and base the solution on Scripture. What are the implications for these biblical truths? Because men and women are created equal yet with different functions and roles, how does this truth affect their relationships with the opposite sex? homosexuality: For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions. For their women exchanged natural relations for those that are contrary to nature; and the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another, men committing shameless acts with men and receiving in themselves the due penalty for their error. And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a debased mind to do what ought not to be done (Romans 1:26-28).

Cohabitation: Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled, for God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterous (Hebrews 13:4). The divorce rate in the United States is high. Forty-three percent of marriages end in divorce within 15 years (www.dcd.gov). Findings from the Rutgers University National Marriage Project showed divorce rates are even higher for those who cohabitate before marriage. The evidence seems to show that living together before marriage increases the risk of divorce. TV sitcoms that show living in sin to be glamorous: I will ponder the way that is blameless. being a man or woman were a triviality. It is very far from being a triviality. It is our nature. It is the modality under which we live all our lives; it is what you and I are called to becalled by God, this God who is in charge. It is our destiny, planned, ordained, fulfilled by an all-wise, all-powerful, all-loving Lord. Elisabeth Elliot, Let Me Be a Woman, pg. 17

The Pinnacle of Creation

Genesis 1:26-2:25

connecting church and home

Imago Dei is Latin for the image of God. Of all of Gods creation, only man and woman have the distinct honor of being image bearers. One of the first rights and privileges of being an image bearer of God was mankinds absolute rule over all of creation. One would think that that would have certainly given man enough jurisdiction and rulership to be content and satisfied. Unfortunately, man was not content. Because he did not obey God, this ability to bear the image of God would be marred.

In Psalm 139, we see that God has gone to great details to create each of us. These verses use the analogy of God knitting us together in our mothers womb. The passages that your child(ren) will study this Sunday point to man and woman being the pinnacle of Gods creation. They will learn of their ability to communicate directly with God, their position to stand before Him with no guilt, and of Gods great desire to relate to His creation. Encourage your child to consider how God clearly desires a relationship with everyone who bears His image. One of the most important ways we and our children bear Gods image is that of all of Gods creation only we have a soul. Treasure Verse: For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mothers womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them (Psalm 139:14-16).
