Human Perception
Humans have developed highly sophisticated skills for sensing their environment and taking actions according to what they observe, e.g., recognizing a face, understanding spoken words, reading handwriting, distinguishing fresh food from its smell. We would like to give similar capabilities to machines.

What is PATTERN
A pattern is an entity, vaguely defined, that could be given a name, e.g.,

RECOGNITION

Fingerprint image, Handwritten word, Human face, Speech signal, DNA sequence,

What is PATTERN RECOGNITION

Pattern recognition is the study of how machines can

Observe the environment, Learn to distinguish patterns of interest, Make sound and reasonable decisions about the categories of the patterns.

PATTERN RECOGNITION APPLICATION

ENGLISH HANDWRITING RECOGNITION

PATTERN RECOGNITION APPLICATIONS

AUTONOMOUS NAVIGATION

FACIAL RECOGNITION INTRODUCTION

Complex and largely software based technique Analyze unique shape, pattern & positioning of facial features It compare scans to records stored in central or local database or even on a smart card

WHAT IS BIOMETRICS
It is a unique measurable characteristics of a human being Used to automatically recognize an individuals identity Two types 1.physiological & 2. behavioral characteristics include A biometric system refers to integrated hardware and software used to conduct biometic identification

FACIAL RECOGNITION BASICS

FLOW DIAGRAM OF FACIAL RECOGNITION PROCESS

FOUR STAGES OF IDENTIFICATION

Capture-Capture the behavioral sample Extraction-unique data is extracted from the sample and a template is created. Comparison-the template is compared with a new sample. Match/non match-the system decides whether the new samples are matched or not.

20 Graphical models of Faces

20 Graphical used : OPEN CV Software I models of Faces

This library simplifies interfacing with digital cameras and allows a researcher the flexibility to modify standard facial recognition algorithms. It is open source and works on both Linux and Windows platforms. The open computer vision library (OpenCV) provides a library to utilize Haar classifiers.
