Day 1 of AM session to day 3 were lectures on pneumatics control with lab sessions on Festo training kits assembly based from the lecture given by Mr. Ching Choong Ming. Day 3 (PM session) was about sharing the experiences about the NYP industrial projects initiated by Mr. Lee Kim Cheng and seconded by the deputy director for R & AS, Mr. Lam Yook Ming. Day 5 afternoon was our 4th field trip to (MIT) Manufacturing Integration Technology Ltd. where the latest IC making machines are demonstrated to us by a Filipino engineer.

This week was initiated by a lecture of Mr. Yeo Boon Pu, who was a Microsoft certified system developer and author of the NYP e-learning system. He showed us the long e-learning journey experiences of NYP. The PM session of day 1 was a visit to Singapore National University, where some of the researches on robotics were shared to us. Day 2-3 (AM) were all about ladder diagram under Mr. Low Chiat Sum. The two last AM sessions was PLC programming under Ms. Shella Tong and the last 2 PM sessions were fieldtrips to Festo, manufacturer of pneumatics systems and we had a chance to visit Sentosa and watched the famous Songs of the Sea.

This week served to be a very challenging part of the module since after the lecture on how to assemble component parts of the Festo MPS (Modular Production System), we were able to bring together, after much effort, this MPS as our mini-project that we were able to explain and present to the deputy director, Mr. Lam Yook Ming. The lectures from day 1-3 were conducted by Mr. Mark Chan and Ms. Shella Tong. Day 4 was about a short exposure and short hands-on programming of the Epson Robotic arm under Mr. Eric Siew.

Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) is one of the most powerful systems for coordinating industrial automation that the Singapore New Water Plant is utilizing. This recycling plant is a very impressive one for Singapore that supplies clean potable water. Mr. Toy Huck Sun, a very good lecturer to my assessment, gave us an equally impressive lecture that guides us vividly to the whole process. One of the hands-on activities is the proto-type design and simulation of a brewery process that we visited at the end of the week to have a look on a popular beer here called Tiger beer which we had a sample drinking session but missed the scheduled tour of the supposedly process of producing this beer. There was a pre-scheduled buffet luncheon which NAYP international brought together 3 international trainees, China, Vietnam and the Philippines.

Mr. Toy Huck Sun This week outshined all the rest of the delegates with that of our own URS delegation since, modesty aside, our team performed very well in the robotic programming that we were able to solve the challenge of smartly programming a toy car robot to run on an S-shaped track. The lead lecturer was Dr. Edwin Foo joined by Mr. Pom YL who personally acknowledged our skill in C programming which I told him, one of my areas of specialization, and to my understanding motivated him and Mr. Pom to share me some extra ideas.

Mr. Jafar Darwis introduced us to the way he teaches his students computer networking. This was a two-day session that is the last session of our training. We had our graduation ceremony on the third day of this week which fell on May 26, 2010, where we were ask to give a short presentation number during the simple but meaningful ceremony. Present on the occasion were Mr. Ho Hooi Min (Senior Director of School of Engineering (Manufacturing), Mr. Foong Tze Foon, Senior Director of NYPi, Mr. John Soh, the Deputy Director of School of Engineering, Mr. Lam Yook Ming, Deputy Director of School of Engineering (Manufacturing), Mr. Nah Yeong Teck, Manager School of Engineering (Manufacturing), Mr. Lucas Chan, the programme leader; Ms. Shella Tong, the assistant programme leader, and Mr. Jafar Darwis, the program coordinator. The master of ceremony was Miss Pebble Teo, the Assist. Deputy Director of NYPi.

Many new opportunities in Mechatronics were given to all of the Philippine delegation. Moreover, both professionally and personally, this had a major impact in my field of engineering and made me realize that in this part of Southeast Asia, Singapore is far more advanced compared to her neighboring Asian countries, even to the rest of the world and yet humble and kind enough to share her blessings and expertise, whether cultural, social or technical. These, I am thankful to all the staff concerned in Nanyang Polytechnic, NYPi and to Temasek Foundation, most especially.

The following few suggestions and recommendations are made: Software used in 3D modeling (Unigrafix), Ladder diagram (FPWin Pro/Gr or Grafcet), and SCADA should have been made accessible and/or installed in trainees laptops whenever possible, for them to practice during free time at their apartment, on the condition that these software applications will be made inaccessible or invalid & uninstalled before they leave Singapore. An alternative to above item is that, an intranet account maybe implemented (given limited privilege or level of access) for trainees to access and have their practice to master or supplement lessons given in a module outside their training time. And with this, at the middle of a module, an exchange of ideas or concept not clearly absorbed or explored may be brought to class discussion for correction and clarification.

Frequent and timely field trips, access to NYP facilities, and socialization activities are very much appreciated and should be carried on to next batches of training in the future. The variation in served meals/snacks during tea breaks is highly commendable. All staff, especially the lecturers, are very accommodating even if it takes more of their time explaining or attending to trainees experiencing difficulties, or otherwise. Senior staff are very approachable going to the level of the trainees, and more importantly, giving them more ideas and learning opportunities at the management level or point of view, sharing their experiences and expertise.
