DISADVANTAGES OF INTERNET

Its the new millennium and we at the dawn of the Information Age. With technology changing and evolving everyday, it may seem hard not to slip behind in this ever changing world. The Information Superhighway has been following computers throughout the past few years. Along with the Internet, an emerging group of elite cybersurfers have turned into todays computer hackers. Most people do not know about them, most people do not know that they exist, but they are out there, lurking in the shadows, waiting for the next victim. It can be a scary world out there. Welcome to the Internet. In the reality it is not as bad as it sounds, and chances are it would not happen to you. However, there are a lot of disadvantages of internet among people as it comes with multi entertainment source. While the internet has made life easier for people in many ways it is also reflecting an uglier side to its existence through a number of problems that it has thrown up for its users. The first disadvantage when using the Internet is that security problems. Your personal information is not safe, especially important one. The valuable websites can be damaged by hackers and your valuable data may be deleted. Similarly, confidential data may be accessed by unauthorized persons. In fact, as you surf the web, read emails, download software or even chat with your friends, a Trojan, known as a hidden program, can be sent to your computer without your knowing. It will steal and transfer all the information you save to the sender. This person, after that, may make use of or give it to somebody else. For example, if you use Internet to shop online, your credit

card number can be stolen, and then the money in your bank account will probably be used up. Or if you send some confidential material to your business partners, your opponents may try to steal it and harm your company. The internet has also allows a great deal of anonymity to a large number of people who may access the different websites, forums and chat rooms available. This has allowed perverted individuals to at times take advantage of innocent people and abuse their trust. Besides that, providing personal information online when shopping or banking can result in hackers gaining access to private data that can be used to steal your funds and even your identity. With a large amount of information freely available on the internet theft and misuse of this information is a likely possibility. Time and again you see cases of people using someone elses information and research and passing it off as their own. Since business dealings and financial transactions have become easier because of the internet another problem that has arisen is that people can now misuse your private information including financial details such as the credit card number. There have been cases of financial frauds and other problems that people have experienced following misuse of such sensitive information. Some unscrupulous individuals have been successful in creating viruses and links that once clicked can automatically transmit your personal email addresses and other details to certain parties and even your bank account details in some extreme cases. The case where funds are withdrawn or where sensitive data are obtained is called phishing. Moreover, on the Internet, credit card fraud is also common. Perhaps the most occurring is the ability to create false accounts for example, on America Online (AOL). At one point, more than 70% of AOL users were using fake credit card number. The scary part is that almost none

of them were caught. Other people send pyramid schemes and chain letters to people by the thousands, these get rich quick, schemes are illegal scams designed to get your money. Yet another fraud on the internet is the selling of carded merchandise. Although it is not common, people take real credit cards numbers and buy expensive electronics by phone ad then sell them on the Internet for extremely low prices. According to the investigation in United States, The US Secret Service believes that US$ 500 million (RM 1.9 billion) may be lost annually by consumers who have credit card and calling card numbers stolen from online databases.

The internet has also given birth to viruses that can wreck havoc in the system and cause a lot of damage. What is a virus? A virus is nothing but a program which disrupts the normal functioning of your computer systems. Computer viruses are not colds for computers. They are destructive time bombs waiting to destroy a computers data. They are usually attack the most common and the more important files on computers and delete them. Unfortunately, they are very easy to get, especially on the internet, and they are not always detectable. Many websites are notorious for sending adware, viruses and also other malicious software that can slow the computer and in some cases even harm it considerably. On the other hand, 99% percent of viruses can be detected by using an antivirus program. Hackers often make their viruses disguised as real programs. Viruses are also can be attached to email messages. Computers attached to internet are more prone to virus attacks and they can end up into slowing down your computers speed, destroying data and crashing your whole hard disk. Maybe most of us here have at least once suffered from viruses no matter how hard we have tried to prevent them from infecting the computers by using some anti-virus programs. These viruses create different

problems in your computer. For example, they can affect the performance of your computer and damage valuable data and software stored in your computer. Going online often means subjecting your computer to viruses that can crash your system, causing you to lose important files and sometimes destroying your operating system. So we should know clearly that they cause bad damages, but are inevitable.

One of the biggest problems that the internet has created is that of spamming. Spamming refers to the activity wherein unwanted emails and other links are sent in bulk to people. These emails may pertain to advertising or random bulk emails and these may contain viruses that may corrupt the system and even if they dont cause any harm these can be plain annoying. This is also another field of hacking on the Internet known as electronic-mail (email) hacking. A hacker can intercept email enroot and read it with no detection. To safeguard this, company use encryption programs and no one but the sender and its recipient can read it. A mail bomb is simply an attack unleashed by dumping hundreds or thousands of email messages onto a specific address. The only way to fix this problem is to either delete each message one by one, or to call your ISP for help. Email forgery is also common. A hacker can change the return address on any given piece of email to anything they want, such as pm@malaysia.com.my. This is illegal because they can use someones address to send fraudulent emails to people. Such illegal activities can be very frustrating for you, and so instead of just ignoring it, you should make an effort to try and stop these activities so that using the Internet can become that much safer.

Apart from that, the internet is particularly attractive for a child since it has so much to offer in terms of entertainment. However pornography is a serious threat in todays world, especially when it comes to children in terms of emotional and mental well being of the child. Nowadays there are thousands of pornographic sites on the Internet that can be easily found. These sites are very harmful to the kids, and may incite them to act out sexually against other ones. According to the study of researcher Dr. Jennings Bryant about 600 American males and females of junior high school age and above, 31 percent of the males and 18 percent of the females admitted actually doing some of the things they have seen in the pornography. Moreover, a recent study has shown that frequent exposure to pornography may cause the children to involve in sexual illness, sexual addiction and unplanned pregnancies, which have bad influences on the childrens mental life. There are practically millions of pornographic sites and without supervision a child can easily fall into the trap of accessing such sites. Even though a number of informative sites are available there is also a darker side to the internet with the availability of a large number of other problematic sites that can cause serious effects on a child during these impressionable ages. There are thousands of pornographic sites on the Internet that can be easily found and can be a detrimental factor to letting children use the Internet. Though, internet can also create havoc, destruction and its misuse can be very fatal, the advantages of it outweigh its disadvantages. Consequently, these pornographic sites can cause immorality among children and teenagers as these websites contains immoral materials in the form of text, pictures or movies. These websites damage the character of new generation and can cause sexual affliction problems among society.

Internet also leads to crime activities as there are many fields of hacking on the Internet. When companies talk about network branches, they mean that someone has gotten a login and corresponding password to the companys information. For example, Citibank was hacked and had US$11 million (RM 41.8 million) stolen by a Russian Hacker. Once the hacker gets administrative access, they are free to get important, maybe even secret information from the company. They can also destroy the data or implant viruses that could attack the machines of a large organization. Another concern is online banking. It allows people to exchange information, mostly money, to and from bank accounts. At this point, prospective customers have no way of knowing which banks can be trusted with Internet accounts. Just because a bank is well known, it does not men its security is airtight. Hackers can use tools such as password sniffers which lock onto an Internet dwellers IP (Internet Protocol) address. The IP address is a persons identity online and it records the information being sent by his or her computer. Thus with a password sniffer, a hacker gets the password. Once this is accomplished, they use another tool called an IP spooler. This tool will fool other computers that you connect on the Internet into thinking that the hacker has some elses IP address, making them that person. In a sense, it changes your identity. The hacker, now with the password and with an identity change, logs on to the remote World Wide Web page and modifies it to his desire or, he can steel information only accessible through the password such as credit card information, important or classified information, or he could simply cause havoc to that person or company.

Last but not least, another disadvantages of Internet is that people who spend too much time sitting in the front of computer can easily gets ill. Radiation emitted by

computers screen is harmful to eyes. People who spend too much time at their homes because they need not go anywhere as they can do everything using Internet are getting weaker. Using the Internet for long periods of time can isolate people from family and friends. Though many develop online relationships, these "cyber" buddies cannot replace "real life" socializing. These may cause people to have weak communication skills and less confidence in social networking in real life. Sitting a for long time is also harmful to the spine and can cause addictive. Some people just cannot live without it. They have no real friends and when Internet is down they are getting furious.Internet has some opponents but more and more people treats Internet like telephone, or radio. They use it for fun and work, and at present living without internet would be quite difficult for some addictive people. Besides that, when a person addicted to Internet they are prone to waste time and forget things happening at surrounding. Student especially will not do their homework and revision for their exam. Consequently, they will not be able to obtain flying colours in their exam.

In conclusion, the Internet has many good things about it, but with all good things comes the downside of humanity. Child pornography is unfortunately easily available on the Internet. As many people know, the federal courts are now in the process of determining what you are allowed to post on the Internet. Apocalyptically, all of the tools and programs mentioned in this document are very common on the Internet and can be downloaded 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and anyone can get them. Go to your favourite search engine on the Internet and type in hacking, pictures, bombs, anarchy, warez, or cracking for your query and you will find millions of documents with everything a hacker would need, all just a click away. It can be a scary world out there

and if you are willing to except both the good and the bad then, welcome once again to the Internet.
