Most Beautiful Mosques In The World
April 20, 2008 Shahrzad
Masjid Al Haram , Mecca , Saudi Arabia
A mosque is a place of worship for followers of Islam. Muslims often refer to the mosque by its Arabic name, masjid. The
primary purpose of the mosque is to serve as a place where Muslims can come together for prayer. Nevertheless, mosques
are known around the world nowadays for their general importance to the Muslim community as well as their demonstration
of Islamic architecture.
Which one of these mosques youve ever visited?
Imam Mosque, Isfahan , Iran

These photos remind me that Islam really does live throughout the whole world, in peace and glory, at least here in
these mosques, which are, indeed, the most beautiful in the world. I hope to visit some of them before my earthly life is
over. Ive seen Masjid al Haram, in Mecca, many times, and it is most beautiful. I ve been blessed to have seen the
Umayyid Mosque in Damascus, and the Sultan Ahmed Mosque in Istanbul. Thank you for collecting thse magnificent
photos.

I wonder what is the state of heart/mind of the architects, workers, engineers who are involved in these projects. The
sense of achievement must be much higher then usual.
My personal favorite is the great Qurtaba or Cordaba mosque of Spain. And the sad part is no Muslim is allowed to
offer prayers in it.
@ Shahrzad
have you read Allama Iqbals famous poem on this mosque?

Marahm, Welcome. You remind us a good point. Still there are many beautiful masjids that i didnt post. Sultan Ahmad
mosque is in my list to do visit.
~W~, Thank you. Along with Umayyad, Masjid al Haram and Imam mosque, i visited Khatam Al Anbiya masjid in
Beirut too. I wish i can travel to spain someday. Alot to see there.
aMmAr, Sure it is. Thats why in Islamic architecture, always masjid comes to be the most beautiful place. Ive not
heard that poem. Share with us here..

yes: youre ending up in my Akismat at the moment.
I know youre surprised but I havent been to the mosque at Cordoba yet. If you go to Spain well go together! and to
the Alhambra too. I didnt know muslims arent allowed to pray there! That seems very weird. Just pretend youre
catholic! And drop your handbag, or something.
I love the blue mosque in Istanbul, and the Khatam al Ambiya in Beirut. and the masjid al Haram in Mecca.

Haha I couldnt believe when I saw the Canterbury mosque there, thats where I usually go for Friday prayers (well it
is the only mosque here). It is very tiny, but how cool is it to have a mosque in a city called Christchurch.
Oh and you can add the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, it is very impressive in my opinion.

chandelier in the world.
AnywayI know i lost many other beautiful mosques in my post.
I searched for a mosque in Australia. But i just found a historical prayer room. Is there any mosque in Australia? I

Thanks for this beautiful post!
I had the utmost pleasure to see three of them
1 the Imam Mosque in Isfahan,
2 the Blue Mosque in Istanbul, and
3 the Al Aqsa Mosque as well as the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem.
All of them are absolute FANTASTIC and of mindboggling beauty!
Are you upset if I clarify something? The picture you show is NOT the Al Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem it shows the
magnificent Dome of the Rock or Qubbat al Saccara! (I did post once about it).
Both are located only some (Im bad in guessing) 100 meters apart on the Temple Mount or Haram as Sharif!

Karin, Thank you for clarifying. I knew that Ghubba Al Sakhrah is not a mosque. But i just like its architecture more
than Al Aqsa mosque which is almost next to it. I would like to visit both of them someday inshaallah.

Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately?) both records have been since surpassed by Sheikh Zayed Mosque in Abu Dhabi

how many of the mosques retain much of the look and feel of the countries that they are in, especially the Chinese
one. Wonderful collage of pictures Shahzarad. You certainly bring the World to your readers with posts such as these.

Allhamdulilah, very beautiful architecture. Looking at the variation of the architectural style of the diff mosques
makes me wonder of the influence. Circular structures being of an eastern influence, Square being of a western one.
Regardless of what the mosque may look like, its what goes on inside that is important. In my humble opinion the true
mosque should be in the heart not in a man made structure.

well i love all mosques. all mosques have their own style and all are beautifull. i think of course mecca is the most
important and greatest mosque in the world. the mosque of prophet muhammad sas in al madina is also great. but the al
aqsa mosque and the dome of rock are also wonderfull and very traditional. muhammad sas went to the heavens from
the dome of rock.. from the modern mosques i really like the Hassan 2. mosque in morocco al maghrib.. its known as
the second largest mosque in the world after mecca and its minarett is 210 meters high. it was build over the atlantic
ocean. It stands on a promontory looking out to the Atlantic, which can be seen through a gigantic glass floor. Built on
reclaimed land, almost half of the surface of the mosque lies over the Atlantic water. This was inspired by the verse of
the Quran that states the throne of God was built on the water. Part of floor of this facility is glass so worshippers
can kneel directly over the sea; above, spotlights shine at night from the top of the minaret toward Mecca. if u take a
look at the pics from wikipedia from inside and outside that its a bit suprising that allmost all muslims here on this
thread do not recognize what a great and wonderfull mosque it is mashallah.

Did u no that the mosque in Cordoba has a great history it actually started as a mosque then became a church then
returned to a mosque. if u look at the towers you can see the change in the architectural design. from arabic to
european to arabic. its quite intense!!!

Dear Shahrazaad
I like very much that you gathered such beatufil photos from of Mosques, and the fact that they come from all over the
Muslim world
I had an idea a while ago to spread the Muslim culture and make us all feel united to have an album of pictures from
the muslim world.
I have a web album on Picasa (a service from google)
and if you download Google screen saver you can point it to this album so such mice photos will be shown
And the beautiful things is that if you computer is on the internet it will check for new photos as added ; so you screen
saver will always show new photos.
So , I am interested in copying the pics of Mosques you provided here but thier resolution is too small. Can you tell
me where is the source of them on the web.

P.S. the address of my photo feed is

Ummayad, mosques in Doha, Morrocco, Syria. I think the chinese masjid is simply beautiful, showing how religion and

Assalamu Alaikkum. Allahu Akbar. ALLAH is Greatest. Beautiful architecture. Looking at the variation of the
architectural style of the mosques makes me wonder of the influence. I wonder what is the state of heart/mind of the
architects, workers, engineers who are involved in these projects. The sense of achievement must be much higher then
usual. My personal favorite is the great mosque Jami Ul Alfar Mosque, Colombo, Sri Lanka

well, it was great to can expression my felling about mosqoue which we know it is used to pray to Alloh s.w.t as the
holiest Alloh house. and know wee see many beautiful and luxirious mosque but the people whos pray for hisself too
little than before, and little by little their Iman was abrasive by the modern and become mosqoue as a symbolic, that is
not good, thegreat mosque is if all of the human being always come and keep in pray there not be admiring it.

This is not El Aqsa and originally this was not a mosque.
Built by Omar over the stone where Abraham intended to sacrifice his son.El Aqsa is about 200 meters to the east and
not so attractive. Kind Abdalla of Jordan (the great grandfather) was assassinated there during Friday prayer.

different countries Ive visited. The Blue Mosque in Istanbul (Istanbul has so many amazing mosques!!), the Umayyad
Mosque in Damascus and the Imam Mosque in Isfahan are all amazing. Egypt also has some beautiful mosques (some
that I went to I dont remember the names of, but the Muhammed Ali Mosque in the Cairo is quite grand).
