The Arc Mercers Art Program is lead by a recent graduate of The College of New Jerseys Art Program, Eric

Zimmermann. Eric is a working artist and has had his art on display in local art shows throughout New Jersey. The Arc Mercer offers an art experience for all of the individuals who attend the agencys Adult Training Center and Aftercare programs. Eric works with large groups allowing all the individuals to express themselves artistically, using free expression through numerous mediums. The Agency also offers small group and individual lessons. Utilizing the Arcs Art Studio located at our Adult Training Center, individuals can experience specialized art classes. The individuals receive lessons utilizing the free expression style of the Matheny Art Access Program. The lessons are open to all individuals with development disabilities in Mercer County through the Arc Mercers Recreation Department. The Arc/Mercer, Inc. recently partnered with the Matheny Arts Access Institute to train in a cutting edge method of facilitating art to individuals with disabilities ranging from physical to cognitive. The program has allowed the Arc/Mercer to introduce art and, more importantly, provide choices to individuals who have limited or no exposure to independent expression and decision making. The Arts Access program is grounded in the belief that self-expression through art can, and will allow each artist to demonstrate that they are more than just a person with a disability. The principles of Arts Access are: 1. Freedom of Choice Through empowerment and ownership, allow for complete control of their works. 2. Artists assisting Artistswe are all equal, there is no teacher and no student. 3. Neutralitywe remain non-influential to ensure the work being produced is 100% the vision of the artist. 4. No Preconceptionsthere is no set school of thought, and no judgments. Enjoy the art and allow it to exist. No piece is better or worse than any other, rather, they are equal. We believe that each piece should be viewed as a Revelation into the mind of the artist. If the principles of the program are followed, there is no limit for our artists.
