WhyisLeadaProblem?
Leadappearstoservenousefulpurposeinthe humanbody. Whenitdoesgetintothebody,however,it seemstointerruptimportantprocesses: 1. Itinhibitsandmimicstheac7onsof calcium.(Pb2+takestheplaceofCa2+) 2. Itinterfereswiththeworkofseveral proteins.

DangerousAmounts
Becausecalciumisanimportantionthatis associatedwithmanyprocessesthatoccurin thebodylike. brainfunc7on kidneyfunc7on fer7lity NOAMOUNTOFLEADEXPOSUREISSAFE becauseitdisruptsthesenaturalprocesses.

LeadPoisoninginChildren:ABigProblem
About 310,000 U. S. Children ages 1 to 5 have elevated blood lead levels which can accumulate over months and years and cause serious health problems

Childrensuerneurologicaleectsatmuchlowerexposure levels. Neurologicaleectsmaybeginatbloodlevelsatorbelow 10g/dLinsomecases,anditmaynotbepossibleto detectthemonclinicalexamina7on.

LeadPoisoninginChildren:ABigProblem
Somestudieshavefound,forexample,thatforevery10g/dLincrease
inbloodleadlevels,childrensIQwasfoundtobelowerbyfourtoseven points(Yuleetal.,1981;Schroederetal.,1985;Fultonetal.,1987; Landsdownetal.1986;Hawketal.1986;Winnekeetal.1990ascitedin AAP1993). ThereisalargebodyofevidencethatassociatesdecrementinIQ performanceandotherneuropsychologicaldefectswithleadexposure ThereisalsoevidencethataGen7ondecithyperac7vitydisorder (ADHD)andhearingimpairmentinchildrenincreasewithincreasingblood leadlevels,andthatleadexposuremaydisruptbalanceandimpair peripheralnervefunc7on(ATSDR2005). Someoftheneurologicaleectsofleadinchildrenmaypersistinto adulthood.

Preven7onandTreatment
Thebanonleadedgasolineandpainthave helpedreducetheaveragebloodleadlevels foundinU.S.children. Adietthatishighincalciumisalsothoughtto helppreventleadpoisoning. Whydoyouthinkthisis?
