INTERMEDIA*
REPRESENTATION OF A ROOM
INTENSIVE WORKSHOP WEEK Middle School Semester 1 2010/2011
*Intermedia was a concept employed in the mid-sixties by Fluxus artist Dick Higgins to describe the inter-disciplinary activities that occur between genres such as those between drawing and poetry, or between painting and theater for example. Higgins described the tendency of the most interesting and best in the new art to cross the boundaries of recognized media or even to fuse the boundaries of art with media that had not previously been considered for art forms, including computers. He noted that Samuel Taylor Coleridge first used the term intermedium.

INTERMEDIA* is a week of intensive workshops in which you will explore a particular space in your project through representation.
The workshop will develop your understanding of the role of representation in the design process. There will be 6 workshops running during the week, encompassing a variety of media and techniques. Through exploratory representation of the space, you are to consider how light enters the room and the connection the room has to adjoining internal & external spaces. You should also consider proportion, materiality and occupation of the space at a human scale. The finished piece of work will communicate these qualities. An exhibition and review of the finished pieces will be held at the end of the week.

The Room is the place of the mind. In a small room one does not say what one would in a large room. A room is not a room without natural light.

INTERMEDIA* STAFFING PROPOSAL

There are 6 concurrent workshops running during the week. Each workshop will have approximately 18 students. The proposal for staffing these is as follows: 6 x Workshop leader: 36 hours (18 Preparation/collation/marking +18 running workshop) There are currently 5 participating staff members leading workshops who have been assigned 36 hours each over the space of the semester to teach representation in the middle school. These hours have been assigned to the workshop week. Alice Clancy, Fiona Hughes, Wendy Barrett, James Rossa OHare and Chris Boyle (to be confirmed) One assignment of 36 hours is needed to run the sixth workshop - this will be shared by Kevin Donovan and Stephen Mulhall. 6 x Visiting Tutor: 9 hours: Skill training, assistance running workshop Due to the high number of students per workshop, and the aim to teach skills thoroughly, we are recommending the use of a visiting tutor with expertise in the relevant media/techniques being used. They will assist each workshop leader for 9 hours of the workshop. Proposed visiting tutors such as David Healy, Donal OHerlihy and Paul Durcan have proven their ability to teach and communicate representation skills effectively to students in previous workshops in the middle school. An assignment of 6x9 visiting tutor hours are needed to assist running the workshops. 6 x In-house Studio Staff: 6 hours: Studio assistance running workshop

To reinforce the connection between the studio project and the workshops, it is proposed that one member of studio staff assists and participates in each workshop during their 6 assigned hours in the week. This amounts to 6 in-house studio tutors.

To summarise the following are needed to enable the successful running of the INTERMEDIA* workshop week: 1 x workshop leader 6 x visiting tutor 1 x 36 hours 6 x 9 hours
