Ancient Greece: Athens/Sparta Lesson Plan Outline

Introduction Lesson topic: Ancient Greece Athens and Sparta Length of Lesson : 40 minutes VA Standards of Learning: 3.4 The student will develop map skills by

a) locating Greece b) describing the physical and human characteristics of Greece c) explaining how the people of Greece adapted to and/or changed their environment to meet their needs. 3.7 The student will explain how producers in ancient Greece used

natural resources, human resources, and capital resources in the production of goods and services.

Cognitive Objectives The students will: Compare and contrast the city-states of Athens and Sparta Identify specific lifestyles of Athens and Sparta

Teaching and Learning Sequence Introduction/Anticipatory Set Instruct the students that we will now be moving on to our Ancient Greece Unit Second teacher or aide will now put on hat labeled Sparta, blow whistle and begin pointing at students while barking at them to get in line Half of students go outside with second teacher

Lesson Development ATHENS: Turn on classical music and begin speaking in a sing-song voice, Boys and girls, what a wonderful day in Athens! We would like to explore the arts and educate ourselves today! Inside, students will be given a variety of choices including: o to make sculptures (with playdough)

o To dance to classical music o Read a book

o Practice math problems Maintain sing-song voice to provide contrast to outside activities After a few minutes of the students playing, tell the girls that they should now learn how to keep the house tidy and instruct them to straighten up the area. Then tell the girls that they are 15 and it is time for them to get married, give them puppets as their husbands to avoid boy/girl complications. After they are married, they may return back to their fun activities but remind them to clean often. Now politely tell the boys that they are now 18 and it is time to line up for their military training Instruct the boys to do ten jumping jacks and ten pushups and then they may return to their activities because two years is now up. Have the students continue to enjoy their activities until the Sparta group comes in from outside. Students will now go outside as Spartans

SPARTA: As the students line up to go outside, the teacher will bark orders Tell students to straighten up and march in straight line Shout Left, left, left, right, left Have students (who are physically able) to run laps around the track outside. Blow whistle and order straight rows 20 jumping jacks, then 10 pushups

Have students march in straight line around track, then march back inside. Students will now go inside as Athenians.

After Athens/Sparta activity Closure Hand out Sparta/Athens comparison handout and Venn Diagram Explain that they will complete this worksheet during morning work. Assign homework, read Daily Living in Athens, complete crossword puzzle Ask students to explain some differences between Athens and Sparta Record on chart with Athens on one side, Sparta on the other Ask students to now think of similar details. Record
