Bio

Why were the 1950s so uncomplicated, the 1970s so turbulent, the 1990s so cynical, and the 2000s so divisive? Looking back to colonial times reveals a repeating cycle, in which those same generational characteristics have played out again and again. We will learn about the characteristics of each generation type and the cycle they inhabit. We will understand where we are today in the cycles, and look more closely at what is predicated for the next 15 years, if we follow the historic patterns. We will also review the research that is the basis for this powerful theory of cultural behavior. Instructor: Stephen Troutman Date

History The Orphan Trains
The orphan trains ran from New York City to many of the mid-western states. Over 200,000 children were placed out over a 75-year period of time. Dorothy will share a part of American History which isnt in our history books. The orphan trains were set up to give needy children the opportunity for a better life. It was the prelude to adoption, orphanages, and foster care in the United States. In May 2004, Dorothy published a book, Burkes Journeys, about one of the early orphan train riders to Indiana. The young man was Andrew H. Burke, who later became a governor of North Dakota. The book was illustrated by Howard Ralston of Rochester. Dorothy is also the author of The Home We Shared. Along with Part 2 (World War II in the Pacific), the classes reveal many significant, but often hidden, facts about WW II which have been frequently misunderstood these past 70 years. Many composers from abroad have looked to America for inspiration. Swede Hilding Rosenberg penned Voyage to America to describe his countrymens journey to a new life. Sergei Rachmaninoffs Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini became an American to continue the creative life that he knew would be stifled in the Soviet Union. Antonin Dvorak visited for three years, composing much of his masterpiece, The New World Symphony, just south of us in Spillville, Iowa. And Aaron Coplands Fanfare for the Common Man remains the briefest, most direct musical statement of what it means to be an American. About Looms and Weaving

Whether you are a weaver, a wannabe weaver, or just curious, come see dozens of looms. There are large antique floor looms brought by Scandinavian immigrants and modern floor looms as well as smaller table, rigid heddle, frame, tapestry, inkle, cradle, tape, band, and pocket looms. Of historical interest is a reproduction warp weighted Viking loom. Many of the looms are warped and you can weave on them if you like. Come and explore wines that are coming from an exciting, up and coming growing region. Greek wines are a mystery to many, however the winemakers in this country are in the midst of a rennaissance. Steeped with a long and rich history, a new young breed of makers along with an influx of money from the EU markets has vastly improved the wine of this country. We will be trying several indigenous varieties that are unique to Greece, yet have a modern twist on them. One of the presenters will be Mr. Janavares. He is a new importer based in Minnesota. Originally from Greece, he has started importing great wine from several long time friends from the region. He will have a unique insight into each of the wines along with the Greek wine market in general. Greece is famous for its rich history, yet is a vibrant modern culture. The wines are much the same. We will be trying several ancient varietals that have a new modern twist on them. You must be 21 years. Light appetizers will be provided. Instructor: Sam Kolas Code

More and more we hear about the importance of drinking tea. Many people have experienced High Tea. However, High Tea is a misnomer. It comes from eating at a high dining table rather than a low tea table. The English Ceremony of Afternoon Tea dates back to the 1840s as a way to ward off inevitable hunger before dinner. It is less a working class meal and more of an "Event." Today it has become an elegant affair served in many restaurants and hotels across the world. Come and experience this complete three course tea with sandwiches, scones, sweets, and a dessert finale. Instructors: Diane Wrobleski and Barbara Snyder Luna Date

NEW Basic Scone Making
Please join us for a morning of exploring the versatility of a basic scone recipe. We'll start with a hands-on exercise making cream scones. They're delicious on their own--but we'll go one step further and enhance the recipe with a variety of mix-ins such as chocolate, berries, and spices. We'll discuss considerations to be made when adding things like fresh fruit or spices, and while the scones bake, we'll make two different toppings. Of course, we'll finish the class with a taste test! Bring a container to take home extras. Instructor: Cara R Schmidt Code

T 'ai Chi/Yoga T'ai Chi ChihBeginning
T'ai Chi Chih is a series of 19 slow, gentle movements and one pose. The purpose of these movements is to circulate and balance the energy or "Chi" in the body. It is not an exercise program, a martial art, or a religion, but rather a form of moving meditation with benefits for body, mind, and spirit. It is easily learned, requires very little practice space, no special clothing, and can be done by anyone regardless of age or physical condition. While benefits received vary with the individual, many people report improved balance and flexibility; improvement in chronic problems such as blood pressure, arthritis, and fibromyalgia; and reduced stress and an over-all sense of well-being and joy in life. Founded nearly 1,000 years ago, T'ai-Chi Ch'uan (pronounced Tie-Gee-Chwan) is an ancient Chinese slow-motion exercise for health, self-defense, mental development, and meditation. This class includes education and practice of gentle warm ups, standing meditation, and Yang-style long form. Based on this understanding, you will learn a program of stress management that has the potential to improve your well-being, health, and overall quality of life. A Parent's/Grandparent's Guide to Bully Protection According to recent surveys, 70 percent of children have to deal with a bully at some point. Do you know what to say when your child tells you: 'They're picking on me.' Do you know what to do when your child comes home with torn clothes or a black eye he can't explain? Hint: saying "Just ignore them" doesn't work. In this class, parents will learn how bullies target students and how to teach children simple, effective, repeatable, assertive, non-violent ways to block bullying behavior. These "Bully Blocker Personal Self Defense" techniques work in concert with Minnesota school bully prevention policies to keep your child safe and provide the school with the information it needs to address bullying.
