MITCHELL J.

LANDRIEU, MAYOR

CITY OF NEW ORLEANS

August 12, 2011

Ms. Nicole Hobson-Morris Director, Division of Historic Preservation Office of Cultural Development Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism P.O. Box 44247 Baton Rouge, LA 70804 Dear Ms. Hobson-Morris, The City of New Orleans supports the nomination of the 17th Street Canal Breach and the east side north breach of the Industrial Canal to the National Register of Historic Places. As the former State Historic Preservation Office, I understand the significance of such a designation and these breaches certainly fit the criteria in that they changed to course of history for New Orleans and her many residents. The mere idea that these levee breaches are eligible and under consideration for inclusion is a testament to the many lives lost and the countless lives that were forever changed. Such recognition of their significance will put into place federal processes that are designed to protect these sights and honor the role they have played in history. This administration supports the efforts to achieve this level of national recognition. We ask that the SHPO and Division of Historic Preservation support the nominations of these levee breaches. If I can further amplify my support of this project, please do not hesitate to contact me. Sincerely,

Scott Hutcheson Advisor to Mayor Mitch Landrieu for Cultural Economy
