*** Got to IPC Daily agenda at www.austinisd.org/staff/22. Under today’s date, there is a document linked to show
you how to create a graph with linear regression and R squared value. Be sure to read what an R squared value is

LAB: OSMOSIS IN POTATO CELLS ANALYSIS QUESTIONS

1. The independent variable is the concentration of the

sucrose solution.
2. The dependent variable is the change in mass of the
potato cylinder.
3. There would be no net change in the mass of the potato
in the 0.4M (+/- 0.1) sucrose solution. (where line crosses
“X” axis)
4. The least percent change in mass is in the 0.4M (+/- 0.1)
sucrose solution. (refer to data table for support)
5. There is no net change in mass of the potato in an isotonic
solution.
6. In the 0.8M sucrose solution the mass of the potato
decreases since the solution is hypertonic.
7. The mass of the potato in the water increases since the
solution is hypotonic.
8. The potatoes in water feel firm while potatoes in 0.8M
sucrose feel soft due to plasmolysis.
9. When the potato cells were in a concentrated solution water
left the potato just as water left the Elodea cell when it was
in salt water. Both the concentrated solution and the salt
water solution were hypertonic to the potato cells and the
Elodea cells.
10. A person who drinks salt water goes crazy due to
dehydration caused by the hypertonic salt solution causing
water to diffuse out of the brain cell membranes by the
process of osmosis.
