Design Project Descriptions

Reverse Engineering of a Solar Water Distillation Unit
By: A. Ramsoondar, I. Mahadeo Supervisors: Dr. E. John & Mr. Kamel Singh Synopsis: A solar water distillation unit at the UTT-Waterloo Research Centre has gone into disrepair and all documentation has been lost. In this project, students repaired and developed maintenance and operation procedures for the solar water distillation unit so that it can be used to fulfill DI water needs for the campus.

Kinetic Modeling of a Four Bed Radial Flow Ammonia Synthesis Converter

By: A. Albert, S. Koongebeharry, L. Lewis Corporate Liaison: Mr. A. Kissoon (PLNL) Supervisors: Dr. B. Aufderheide & Dr. E. John Synopsis: The primary goal of this project was to find kinetic parameters for the catalysts used at PLNL. The secondary objective was to determine optimal flow rates to the heat exchangers in the ammonia synthesis converter to maximize conversion. Detailed models of reactor bed and overall ammonia synthesis converter were simulated and optimized using Matlab.

Evaluation of an Amine Absorption Tower at a Local LNG Plant

By: A. Maharaj, P. Persad, M. Mangray, M. Chan Corporate Liaison: Mr. C. Sookram (Atlantic LNG) Supervisors: Dr. N. Hanif Synopsis: Analysis of the system downstream one of the amine absorption towers at the facility indicates that spent molecular sieves contain residual amine. Amine is a contaminant in the molecular sieves and reduces the moisture loading capacity of the molecular sieve beds. Using Aspen Hysys the students explored the possibility of overloading at the Amine Absorption tower and developed possible solutions.

Design of Wastewater Treatment Facilities for Water Re-use and Production of Renewable Energy
By: A. Mitchell, A. Mahabir Supervisors: Dr. E. John, Mrs. R. Skeene, Dr. B. Aufderheide Synopsis: The UTT-Point Lisas campus would like to convert the wastewater generated on site into a source of renewable energy and re-use some of the treated wastewaters for irrigation and landscaping purposes. Students designed a wastewater treatment plant to demonstrate cost-effective means for the production of renewable energy and the conservation of water resources.

Evaluation of Cold Plant Operations for the Extraction of Natural Gas Liquids from Natural Gas
By: A. Farrell, D. Pariag, N. Ramkarran, R. Rambeharry Corporate Liaisons: Mrs. J. Babwah , Mr. R. Ramsaran (PPGPL) Supervisors: Dr. M. Watson Synopsis: The extraction of natural gas liquids from natural gas is a critical operation as it affects the viability of natural gas as a fuel and petrochemical feedstock for many process units at the Point Lisas Industrial Estate. The students performed a process evaluation of the Cold Plant by developing design and operating case simulations using Aspen Hysys.

Upgrade of Nitrogen Generation Facility at a Local LNG Plant

By: S. Paramsook, S. Ramjitsingh, A. Baksh, F. Rahim Corporate Liaison: Mr. R. Ramoutar (Atlantic LNG) Supervisors: Dr. M. Watson & Mrs. R. Skeene Synopsis: Atlantic LNG uses membrane technology to supply the nitrogen needs of the facility. However, the requirements have since increased and there is need to supplement the generated nitrogen with vapourised liquid nitrogen at significant cost to the plant. This project required the students to research and evaluate industry relevant design options and select the optimal with the use of Aspen Hysys and Aspen Process Economic Analyser.

Optimization of Disinfection System for Sea Water Cooling Tower

By: M. Isaac, A. Gadoo, K. Downing Corporate Liaison: Mr. A. Kissoon (PLNL) Supervisors: Dr. B. Aufderheide & Dr. E. John Synopsis: The complete disinfection system for a sea water cooling tower is investigated and modeled in Matlab. The goal is to keep alga growth on cooling towers and microbial films on plate and frame heat exchangers to a minimum.

Biodiesel Production from Waste Oil

By: K. Jacob, L. Sobrian, M. Philbert Supervisors: Dr. N. Hanif Synopsis: In an effort to recycle local waste cooking oil, a biodiesel production facility was designed. A collection and transportation system was also designed to service the facility.

Emulsion Prevention and Treatment at a Local LNG Plant

By: D. John, T. Ramdhan, M. Mottley Corporate Liaison: Mr. C. Pedro (Atlantic LNG) Supervisors: Dr. E. John Synopsis: In this project, several designs were developed to prevent or treat emulsions with the intent of processing additional NGLs at the Atlantic LNG facility.
