1.0. INTRODUCTION Insurance is basically a sharing device. The losses to assets resulting from natural calamities like fire, flood, earthquake, accidents, etc., are met out of the common pool contributed by large number of persons who are exposed to similar risks. Thus contribution of many is used to pay the losses suffered by unfortunate few. However the basic principle is that loss should occur as a result of natural calamities or unexpected events which are beyond human control. Moreover the insured person should not make any gains out of insurance. It is natural to think of insurance of physical assets such as motor car insurance or fire insurance but often we forget that creator of all these assets is the human being whose efforts have gone a long way in building up the assets. In that sense, human life is a unique income generating asset. Unlike the physical assets, which decrease in value with passage of time, the individual becomes more experienced and more matured as he advances in age. This raises his earning capacity. The purpose of life insurance is to protect the income of individual and provide financial security to his family, which is dependent on his income in the event of his premature death. The individual himself also needs financial security for the old age or on his becoming permanently disabled when his income will stop. Insurance also has an element of savings in certain plans.

Setting New Standards: The biggest benefit of liberalization has been to the customer, who now has a wide choice in terms of product range, as against the traditional endowment and money back policies Private insurance companies have come out with the latest version of market linked products available in the international markets and they are quite different from other conventional plans Market Linked Plans provide for life insurance where the policy value at any time varies according to the value of the underlying assets at the time. Market linked insurance plan is life insurance solution that provides the client with the benefits of protection and flexibility in investment. . The investment decision is borne by the policy holder where by he may lose under conventional policy .The value of

money and may not achieve his financial goals but has the potential of earning high returns which opportunity is not available the fund goes up and down based upon market conditions. It is a vehicle for small investors to participate and have the potential of gain from the equity markets. . Market linked insurance plan is fundamentally different from with and without

profit plans

Features of MARKET LINKED PLANS: Market linked plans distinguishes itself through the multiple benefits it provides to the customer the plan is a one stop solution providing 1. Life protection 2. Investment and savings 3. Flexibility 4. Transparency 5. Liquidity 6. Tax planning In a falling interest rate scenario and boom experienced in the equity markets, market linked policies are becoming popular and favored by market savvy and high net worth individuals. 1.0.13. Competition has spurred the usage of technology in the insurance industry. While earlier obtaining the status of life insurance policy was a time consuming process, customers can now get their policy status and other information through call centers, interactive voice response systems and through the internet. The creation of the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority (IRDA) has helped customers vastly as the authority now specifies time limits for documentation and settlement of claims. The regulator has also made it mandatory for insurers to have a premium calculator on their website, which makes it easier for the customer to compare products across companies. 1.0.14. In the last three years of liberalization, promoters of private insurance companies have demonstrated their long-term commitment to the Indian market in the best way. The total investment in private life insurance companies is now over Rs.3, 000 crore, which is much more than investments by promoters in any other segment of the financial sector.

1.0.15. The insurance industry has also played a significant role in mobilizing the savings of the individuals, providing cover against unforeseen contingencies and is investing these funds for economic development of the country. With only one fourth of the insurable population provided with insurance protection there is vast scope of growth for all the private companies in the future as untapped potential is still very large.

Quite often a research hypothesis is a predictive statement, capable of being tested by scientific methods that relates an independent variable to some dependent variable. The following null-hypotheses were set in order to achieve the aforesaid objectives. There is no significant relationship between the purpose of investment in insurance and the annual income. There is no significant relationship between the gender of the respondent and the risk taken while investing There is no significant relationship between the risk taken while investing and the amount invested. There is no significant relationship between the purpose of investment in insurance and the occupation There is no significant relationship between age of the respondent and the risk taken by him while investing.

17

2.5 Limitations of the Study The time constraint had restricted the researcher from more detailed study of the reasons behind the responses. The respondents have limited awareness about the private insurance companies. The sampling method adapted to this study is the major limitation. Because in convenience sampling, elements of the sample may not represent the whole population. As the sample size is not determined through customer database provided by the company

18

3.0 RESEARCH METHODOLOGY Introduction: According to the Oxford Advanced Learners Dictionary of current English the meaning of research is a Careful Study or investigation especially in order to discover new facts or information. Research is defined as movement from the known to the unknown. It is an effort to discover something. According to Clifford Woody Research comprise defining and redefining problems, formulating hypothesis or suggested solutions, collecting/ organizing and evaluating data, making deduction & research conclusions and at last carefully testing the conclusion to determine whether they fit the formulation hypothesis. 3.1 Research design: Research design is a plan of action that guides the entire research. There are four types of research design available. They are 1. Exploratory Research Design 2. Descriptive Research Design 3. Diagnostic Research Design 4. Experimental Research Design In this Study Descriptive Research Design has been adopted.

19

3.2Sampling Method: Convenience sampling method was adopted to select sample customer. Convenience sampling, as the name implies is based on the convenience of the researcher who is to select a sample .The type of sampling is also called as accidental sampling as the respondents in the sample are included in it merely on account of their being available on the spot where the survey is in progress. Thus a researcher may stand in certain prominent location and interview all those people who arrive there. The list of 1150 customers who are using the market linked products of ICICI prudential life insurance in Adyar Branch and residing in Adyar region has been given as the population. As per company rules and regulations information about customers are confidential so I conducted the survey in the branch itself. The customers visiting the branch at Adyar and if they are using market linked products and residing in Adyar were samples for the study. 3.3 Sample Size: The research design is of descriptive design .Further the sampling method is sampling method is convenience sampling. Hence no statistically valid conclusions about the population are being attempted. Hence a sample size of 10% of the customers of the branch using market linked plans has been chosen. The sample size is 10 3.4 Pre-testing: Pre-testing is a method which has to be followed strictly. Once questionnaire is drafted it should be field tested before finalizing. The responses are studied to determine the need for restructuring the questionnaire. Pre-testing was done on a group of 15 respondents. With the result of the pre-testing the researcher has reframed some of the questions.

20

3.5 Period of Study: The period of study is for three months i.e., January to March 2006. 3.6 Method of Data Collection: The data collected for the study includes both primary and secondary data in order to attain the objectives of the study. Apart from this, information regarding the company, future prospects etc have been collected from websites, clipping from newspapers, magazines, journals and books. 3.7 Questionnaire Design: Quite often questionnaire is considered as the heart of a survey operation. Hence it should be very carefully constructed. Questionnaire was prepared with the combinations of various types of questions which have been listed below. questions and 2 scaling/ranking questions. The number of questions used under each type is 1 yes/no questions 12 closed ended

21

3.8 Statistical Tools Used: The role of statistics in research is to furnish a tool in designing research, analyzing its data and drawing conclusions there from. As well known that a researcher cannot ignore the science of statistics. Tools used in the study are as follow. 3.8.1 Chi-Square test: The objective of the chi-square test is to determine whether any significant difference exists among the various groups. Chi-square test involves comparison of expected frequency (Ei) with observed frequency (Oi) to determine whether the difference between the two is greater than the tabulated value that might occur by chance. There are 5 steps in using chi-square test. 1. The difference between each observed frequency and each expected frequency is computed. 2. The difference is squared. 3. Each squared difference is divided by the respective expected frequency. 4. Their quotients are added together to obtain the computed chi square value. 5. This computed value is then compared with tabulated chi-square value. If the computed rejected. On the other hand, if the calculated the hypothesis is accepted. Where O E

value is greater than the tabulated

value at a

predetermined level of significance and degrees of freedom, the hypothesis is

value is less than the tabulated valued,

22

3.8.2 Weighted Average method: When the relative importance of the different observations is not the same, we compute weighted arithmetic mean. Xw Where Xw Xi Wi = = = Weighted arithmetic mean the variable Weights attached to the variable Xi i-1n = WiXi / Wi The terms Weight stands for the relative importance of the different observations. The formula for this is,

5.1 FINDINGS

74

The respondents feel that the advisors are a major source of information about the market linked plans. Most of the respondents (69 %) are satisfied with the service provided by the company. Most of the respondents (85 %) are having their risk level between low and medium. Investments are made in such avenues where risk is low or medium. 65% of the investments are made in fixed deposits, real estate and others. The rest of them are made in mutual funds and shares. LIC has been a major competitor for ICICI Prudential in the market linked insurance plans. LIC has been given first rank in terms of safety for the money and options to change the terms of the policy. Nearly two third of the respondents are investing below 50,000and the rest of them are investing above. The fundamental principle behind the life insurance is life coverage and this has been confirmed by the respondents to the survey. ICICI Prudential has been given first rank in terms of option to withdraw the money, service and returns. Approximately 66% of the respondents belonged to the income groups of below 1 lac and1- 2 lac. Most of the respondents (67 %) are graduates and post graduates. Approximately 70% of the respondents belonged to the categories of private sector employee, government servants and self employed .Rest of the respondents belonged to the categories of house wife, retired, professional and others. There is no significance relationship between the purpose of investment in insurance and the annual income of the respondents. There is significant relationship between the gender of respondents and amount of risk taken while investing.

75

There is significant relationship between the risk taken while investing and the amount invested by the respondents. There is significance relationship between the purpose of investment in insurance and the occupation of the respondents. There is significant relationship between the age of respondents and amount of risk taken while investing. Even though Life insurance sector is opened for private, LIC is continuing its strong impact on peoples mind. Bajaj allianz, a private life insurance company had been ranked last in terms of service :ICICI prudential is doing well in terms of renewal premium collection, claim settlements and other services but not in customer care service.

76

5.2 RECOMMENDATIONS The respondents feel that the advisors are a major source of information about the market linked plans .So ICICI Prudential has to improve the effectiveness of other advertising and promotional efforts. ICICI Prudential is doing well in terms of renewal premium collection, claim settlements and other services .But they have to concentrate on their customer care service because this service is not provided properly by the company as well as others. In retaining the customers and getting business through them post purchase service plays a vital role Most of the respondents belonged to the income groups of below 1 lac and1- 2 lac. So ICICI Prudential should concentrate on this group of customers and design products suited for this segment of the population. Most of the respondents respondents are having their risk level between low and medium. So ICICI Prudential should design unique products for this sort of customers characterized by low/medium risk.

77

5.3 CONCLUSION The project title is A study on customer perception towards market linked insurance products of ICICI PRUDENTIAL In Adyar region of Chennai city. Customer perception has been found through a questionnaire gathering information regarding their awareness about the insurance companies, most preferred area of investment by the customer, problems faced by customers in terms of service, relationship between demographics and the amount of investment and risk taking appetite and preference of customers in terms of different players in the industry. In terms of the awareness and safety, LIC is occupying the first position. The risk appetites of the customers are mostly between medium and low. Most of the respondents are having insurance for the purpose of life coverage. Mostly the demographics of the respondents have a significant relationship with the amount of investment and risk taking appetite. The respondents mostly prefer the avenues of fixed deposits and real estate for investment. ICICI PRUDENTIAL is ranked first in terms of service and returns. Private life insurance companies except ICICI PRUDENTIAL dont have the capability to compete with LIC in all perspectives. Customers are facing difficulties in getting responses to their queries and it has been ranked last among the various services provided by the ICICI PRUDENTIAL. Recommendations have been made to overcome the deficiencies observed. Suggestions have also been made to design products to meet the requirements of the largest segment of customers keeping their preference for low/medium risk so as to gain competitive advantages. .
