PLATFORM ART, INC., a nonprofit organization, is a collaboration of artisans and art lovers whose ultimate goal is to showcase new and exciting talent in the fields of art, film, fashion, sound and performance. Platform Art Party #18: Orbs & Spheres Saturday, November 12, 2011, Art Party: 7-11pm The Ritz Theatre, 263 W. Central Avenue, Winter Haven, FL 33880 The theme is Orbs & Spheres We are seeking artworks that are edgy, traditional or cutting edge. Visual art, sculpture, and photography, installations are welcome. One artwork that incorporates the orbs and sphere theme or an artistic bra (brassiere) as a part of the submitted artwork is required. Have fun with the theme. This is a juried event. A limited number of artists will be accepted due to space constraints. Awards are: Best wearable bra art (wearable bras may be modeled during the fashion show) We must receive wearable bras by November 5th for fitting and rehearsal Best unwearable bra art (painted, sculpted, photographed, digital artwork, etc) Best artwork related to the Orb or Sphere theme Please feel free to pass along this call to artists to any artists you fell may be interested. If you are not familiar with Platform Art please check out our site www.platformart.org Wikipedia Definitions: The word "orb", from the Latin orbis 'circle', is another name for a round object, especially a disk or a sphere. In astrology, orb refers to the difference between the exactness of an astrological aspect. In optics, orb refers to an unexpected and often circular photographic artifact. A sphere is a perfectly round geometrical object in three-dimensional space, such as the shape of a round ball. Like a circle in two dimensions, a perfect sphere is completely symmetrical around its center, with all points on the surface lying the same distance from the center point. Celestial spheres, or celestial orbs, were the fundamental entities of the cosmological models developed by Plato, Eudoxus, Aristotle, Ptolemy, Copernicus and others. In these celestial models the stars and planets are carried around by being embedded in rotating spheres made of an ethereal transparent fifth element (quintessence), like jewels set in orbs. In the heliocentric celestial orbs model introduced by Copernicus, the ascending order of the planets and their spheres going outwards from the Sun at the centre was Mercury, Venus, Earth-Moon, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn. In modern science, the orbits of the planets are simply the paths of those planets through mostly empty space. For medieval scholars, on the other hand, celestial spheres were actually thick spheres of rarefied matter nested one within the other, each one in complete contact with the sphere above it and the sphere below. A brassiere, commonly referred to as a bra is an undergarment that covers, supports and elevates the breasts. Since the late 19th century, it has replaced the corset as the most widely accepted method for supporting the breasts. Women can choose from a wide assortment of bras for a variety of purposes: to enhance the perceived shape of her breasts, to minimize or to enlarge the perceived breast size, to restrain breast movement during an activity such as exercise, to enhance her cleavage, to conceal her nipples, to overcome sagging, for prosthetic purposes, or to facilitate nursing. Womens brests vary widely in size and shape. Most are asymmetric to a degree and can change from month to month depending upon a variety of factors. The bra has also become a garment with erotic significance and a feminine icon or symbol with political and cultural significance beyond its primary function.

Application Deadline: Applications and accompanying materials must be received NO LATER THAN SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 24, 2011. Artist Acceptance: Artists will be notified of acceptance by SATURDAY, OCTOBER 1, 2011. Event Location: The Ritz Theatre, 263 W. Central Avenue, Winter Haven, FL 33880 Event Date: SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 12, 2011, 6:00 PM 11:00 PM Requirements: Submit one digital photo of each artwork of at least 3x4 at 300dpi (900x1200pixels) in jpeg or pdf format for publishing in the event magazine and catalog no later than SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 24, 2011 for curating and cataloging. Email digital photos to social@platformart.org. Digital images sent in MS Word documents or that are a resolution of less than 300dpi are not acceptable. Because we are creating a catalog of art for the event, do not submit artworks that you do not intend to display at the event. Artist Setup: Set-up is FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 11, 2011, 1:00 PM 7:00 PM. Artists are responsible for all components of their display This includes but is not limited to: pedestals, tables, walls, hooks, lights, extension cords etc. Accepted artworks must be tagged with the name of the artist, title of the work (or untitled #1, untitled #2, untitled #3, etc.) and the asking price for the work. Due to space constraints, NO TENTS OR BOOTHS will be permitted. Special needs should be discussed with the Curator and will be accommodated if possible. Artists will have adequate space to exhibit up to five (5) artworks that the curator selects for the event. NEW! ART DESK: Artists will check in and verify their cataloged entries at the Friday set-up. Please let the art host/hostess know if there is an acceptable minimum below the asking price on a piece, especially if you are not be available for consulting on the evening of the event. All art sales are managed through Platform Art. A 20% commission fee is charged. Art hosts/hostesses will assist patrons/guests with art purchases.
