Geology played a key role in fashioning the Cayman Islands into one of the most sought-after watersports destinations in the world. Residing atop the peak of a sheer submerged mountain range, the islands are surrounded by the Cayman Trench. The northern edges of the Trench form the massive wall known as the Cayman Ridge which plunges dramatically to depths in excess of 25,000 feet, making it the deepest point in the Caribbean sea. This dropoff (or wall) commences its vertical descent approximately 100 yards from shore where depths range from 40 to 60 feet. North of the Cayman Ridge, the sea again becomes progressively deeper, creating the Yucatan Basin. Thus, the islands are completely surrounded by a series of abysmal undersea walls on all sides. This unique confluence of geomorphic features is responsible for the existence of the famous Cayman walls and dropoffs. The walls, together with such factors as climate, sea temperature, underwater currents and the islands topography, form the basis of Caymans uniquely complex and multifaceted tapestry of underwater life.

Watersports Tame sealife abounds at Stingray City Two Stingray City locations were inadvertently created in the early 1900s as fishermen returning to port anchored in the calm waters of the sound to clean their catch, casting unused bait overboard. Southern Stingrays, who hunt by sense of smell quickly discovered these new restaurants where they now dine primarily on squid provided by visiting divers and snorkelers. Ideal for extended diving and snorkeling, both locations are situated in shallow water. Stingray City averages 12 feet in depth while Sandbar is slightly shallower with depths ranging from 3-10 feet. Boat Diving

There will usually be a 4060ft sandy bottom under the boat; this is a good place to get oriented, fine tune your buoyancy, check your gauges & camera/video equipment and make sure your buddy is comfortable. Your journey to the wall will commence through or over tunnels, chutes and caverns populated with lobster, shrimp, crab and copious species of fish and bottom dwellers. Look (but do not reach) into little nooks and crannies along the way and you may spot a moray eel gazing back at you. Once you reach the wall, maintain an ongoing vigil for Spotted Eagle Rays who soar gracefully like immense butterflies in slow motion. While they can be spotted virtually any time, they are particularly prevalent during summer
The shy and elusive Queen Angel Fish is among the most beautiful and ornate sea creature in all the worlds oceans
months along the walls of the north side. Turtles and (occasionally) several species of sharks can also be spotted swimming along the wall. Black coral can be found near depths of 100ft, usually under outcroppings or inside tunnels; soft and bush-like, it will appear light brown or white in color. Do not touch it! Black coral is very delicate and grows a mere inch every 2-3 years. As you make your way back to the boat you will have an opportunity to explore the top of the wall in depths of 4060ft. Here, you will descry a vast bio-diversity of fish, soft co rals, fans and sponges to capture your intrigue right up to your very last second of bottom time. (continued)

Location: North Wall Dive Name of site: Princess Penny Average Depth: 40 130 feet Access: Boat Easily one of the more dramatic and diverse wall dives on the island, Princess Penny offers the best features of several dive sites all rolled into one. The mooring ball is pinned at ~60ft. where you will find a plaque dedicated to one of Caymans beloved late divemasters. Coral encrusted tunnels and caverns lead out to the wall where eagle rays, turtles and the occasional shark soar among the myriad resident fish. Several feet beyond the wall a massive pinnacle soars to a depth of 70 feet. Swimming completely around the pinnacle is facilitated by a vast cavern lined with black coral. The top of the pinnacle is rich in vibrant colors and diverse in sponge, and coral formations. Photographers, bring your wide angle lens and at least onne external strobe. Kittiwake Shipwreck
Be sure to ask about diving Grand Caymans new Kittiwake shipwreck dive. This magnificent 250 foot retired US rescue vessel now rests at the Northwest Point marine park at 15 to 65 feet. All of our recommended dive operators offer a choice between a guided dive or a buddy dive on your second dive. The latter lets you pursue your individual interests at your own pace. Always begin your dive at the maximum depth and gradually ascend throughout your dive. On the sandy bottom you may encounter conch, flounder, garden eels and hermit crabs. Small holes & crevices frequently house eel, shrimp, crab, octopus and lobster. Look for outcroppings and overhangs to swim under; they are often occupied by tarpon, grouper, silverside and other fish seeking shade and shelter. Shine your light along the top and inside walls to reveal sponges, corals, algae and tunicates in a sparkling array of vibrant colors. Tube sponges are often home to tiny shrimp and goby fish. Brittle star, cowrie and nudibranch often inhabit sponges, sea fans and many species of coral. Continuing your ascent along the side of the reef as the sunlight gradually intensifies, you will notice a progressive increase in the spectrum of color. Fish, corals, sponges and fans will impart their true resounding brilliance. Listen to the soft sublime sounds of the clicking of the snapping shrimp and the parrot fish pecking away methodically at the hard coral. Back away several feet and cogitate the simple complexity transpiring before you. Thousands of diverse organisms attaining together as one single remarkable entitythe living reef.

Snorkeling provides a fast, easy and very affordable medium for putting you directly in touch with the underwater world. A mask and fins, available for sale or rent at any dive shop, is all that is required to participate in this fun and relaxing activity. If you have not snorkeled before, begin in the shallow water of a sandy beach. Always snorkel with a buddy, and help each other as you don your mask and fins on a calm beach in waist-deep water. Practice clearing the snorkel with a fast exhale and lie motionless as you gain confidence in your ability to float effortlessly on the surface. As you venture out to deeper water, be mindful of currents and keep a watchful eye on your point of entry. Darker areas below the surface usually denote the presence of a reef, sometimes only several feet below the surface. Here you will find myriad species of colorful fish, corals, sponges and much more. Take three deep breaths (and no more), holding the third breath and dive down for a closer look at the fascinating creatures below. DO NOT TOUCH ANYTHING! There are many fish and corals which deliver a painful (and sometimes toxic) sting; also, the reef is an extremely delicate entity which can be easily destroyed by contact. Be one of the first to dive Caymans newest wreck!
Sunk on January 3, 2011, the Kittiwake rests on a sandy bottom between 15 and 65 feet in a scenic marine park located in West Bay. Admission fees are $10 to dive and $4 to snorkel, which is included in your dive or snorkel rates. Kittiwake is 250 long with 5 decks towering near 50 vertically. Her crows nest, mast and large stern frame were refitted to reduce height and allow easy access for exploring. All other decks remain in tact and accessible, including captain & officers quarters. Main deck features include a rec room, mess hall, workshop and recompression chambers. Lower decks have crew quarters, sick bay, engine room and many nautical holds and equipment ripe for exploration. Snorkelers can see the top decks, peer down smokestacks and even see into many of the holds. Kittiwake is one of the largest snorkel friendly shipwrecks in the world! Marine life has already started to inhabit the wreck, with several species of fish, stingray and eels settling into their new home. Dive and snorkel enthusiasts alike will find the Kittiwake one of the more fun and fascinating experiences of their vacation.

As evening falls upon the reefs, creatures, coral and colors arise! At night the underwater world provides a rare experience that reveals nocturnal fish in predatory mode, as corals with their polyps open reflect a kaleidoscope of colors not seen during the day. When the sun sets and moods change, consider this most sophisticated and intimate experience. A relaxed ferry ride to the submarine near sunset sets the mood as soft shore lighting provides the backdrop scenery to the start of your evening adventure. At the dive sites the sea is dark but 20,000 watts of underwater lighting illuminate the most sensational evening entertainment you could ever imagine. Once the Submarine hatches are closed and your night dive descent begins, your adrenaline doesnt know quite what to do, as initially there is nothing to see. But within several minutes as the submarine approaches 20 feet of the bottom, the reef slowly comes into view. As the pilot sets the depthwithin 6 feet of the reef, the corals opened polyps and sponges begin to reflect a full spectrum of colors back to you in the submarine. At this point, the nocturnal predatory fish should also be visible, scouring the reefs by the lights of the submarine for unwary daytime fish asleep in crevasses of the coral. These fish will usually follow the submarine throughout the tour, providing distraction and excitement. Throughout your 45 minute underwater experience, their tour guide provides commentary on the fascinating underwater world at night, in a humorous and entertaining fashion. They regularly schedule two departures between 7pm and 8pm to accommodate your preference of an early or late dinner. The entire tour lasts 1.5 hours so you can choose to have an early dinner and late dive; or an early dive and a later dinner. South Sound refers to the bay of water and adjoining land along this southern stretch of the island. The soundless than 8ft deep, is largely comprised of turtle grass, rocks and juvenile fish. Not particularly suited to swimming or snorkeling, it is often suitable for windsurfing. Smith Cove resides within this prestigious community of predominately modern upscale homes. Red Bay Dock lies near the easternmost end, which will most likely be your departure point when diving during a norwester. West Bay, primarily a residential and farming community, comprises the westernmost region of the island and is home to several secluded beaches and attractions. Just past Cemetery Beach at the four way stop, look to the left for Boggy Sands Road. Starting from Seven Mile Beach, make your first stop Fosters Food at the Strand (map 3/C8). Get a cooler and fill it with beverages and delicious ready made snacks from their extensive deli. They offer a vast selection of hot and cold meals at very reasonable prices. Drive towards town with the ocean on your right and pass through George Town along South Sound. Visit Cathy Churchs Underwater Photo Gallery located at Sunset House and then just a few blocks farther, Pure Art is packed with an extensive assortment of local arts and crafts. As you reach the end of South Sound make an immediate left through the roundabout and stop at Black Pearl Skate/Wave Park at Grand Harbour shopping center. While you are there, be sure to pick up an exotic cappuccino and pastry at Brew House; or a deliciously affordable lunch or dinner and cocktails at Brick House. A half mile further you will see Caybrew on the right side of the road. Stop for free samples of their delicious locally produced beer. Continuing east, a few miles farther on the right is Pedros Castle plan at least an hour to explore the castle, theater, gift shop and panoramic ocean views. Then continue east for about 3 miles to Bodden Town where you will find Pirates Caves on your left. Plan at least an hour (longer, for photo enthusiasts) to explore authentic caves dug by pirates from Caymans past. Meander along nature trails teeming with exotic birds, animals and aquatic life. Continuing on from Bodden town its about ten miles along some of the islands most scenic coastline to Frank Sound Rd.; past there its exactly 4.1 miles to the Blow Holes. There are swimming and picnic areas near the blow holes. Continue on for a few more miles and enjoy a spectacular view of the Wreck of the Ten Sails Look for the large 8 propeller, marking the trail to the observation point to view the wreck and read the plaque that describes the story of their plight. Start making your way to Kaibo as lunch time approaches. Continue east until you reach the north end of Frank Sound Road and look for the Queens Monument. Weather permitting, this area offers some of the best snorkeling and shore diving on the island for experienced swimmers. From here you can either keep going straight to Cayman Kai or turn left on Frank Sound Rd. to Mastic Trail and Botanical Park. Kaibo at Cayman Kai is admission FREE and provides the ultimate remote getatway; much like visiting a different island or going back in time to a more laid back lifestyle. Their shallow 220 ft. lagoon is ideal for learning to snorkel while encountering starfish and becoming comfortable before moving out to deeper water and seeing even greater sites. Plan a day ahead for an exotic, relaxing and educational kayak eco tour with Cayman Kayaks who will have your kayaks ready at Kaibo. Drive south on Frank Sound Road for about 2 miles until you see the entrance to Botanical Park on your left. Plan on spending at least an hour exploring this immense nature preserve with breathtaking photo opportunities. Then continue south for about a mile until you reach Mastic Road turn right and drive about a half mile until you see the sign for Mastic Trail. This is a fairly rugged trail so pace yourself according to your physical conditioning and the current temperature. If you become hot or tired, stop, rest and turn back; a mile or less is usually adequate to see most of the various types of plant and animal life. Continue south along Frank Sound Rd. to the main road and turn right for an extraordinary meal at Lighthouse Restaurantone of Caymans very best restaurants; or right to return to Seven Mile Beach. Starting from Seven Mile Beach, make your first stop Fosters Food at the Strand shopping centre (map 3/C8). Get a cooler and fill it with your favorite beverages and delicious ready made snacks from their extensive bakery and deli, offering everything from sandwiches to complete local and continental meals, all at surprisingly affordable prices. Drive north, past public beach with the ocean on your left until you see a cemetery on your left, marking the trail to Cemetery Beach. The darker areas below the surface denote reefs, which lie about 30 yards from shore at 1530 feet. When you leave, continue in the same direction until you reach the 4way stop. Behind the Texaco, you will find Boggy Sand Road, which runs about a mile along one of the areas most pristine and uninhabited beaches. This is a perfect spot for walking, snorkeling, picnics or just curling up under a shady tree with your favorite book and a beverage. Leaving Boggy Sand, turn left and keep the ocean on your left until you come to West Bay Dock, where you will find a serene white sand beach with clear turquoise blue water. From there keep left until you reach Lighthouse Point, where divers have easy access to one of the closest and most spectacular areas of Turtle Canyon Reef at Northwest Point. Non divers can snorkel in their pristine and relatively shallow areas teeming with life or enjoy affordable food and drink at their on site restaurant. Snorkelers may prefer the sanctuary and always perfect conditions and abundant sea life at the Turtle Farm, with their delightful local restaurant - Schooners. This is the perfect spot to freshen up for dinner at one of Caymans most outstanding local and seafood restaurants. If its not quite dinner time, continue on to Spanish Bay; while the resort itself is closed, you will find easy beach access trails leading to where the snorkeling and diving conditions are commonly nothing short of extraordinary. Divers will want to continue on to Cobalt Coast for a spectacular north wall shore dive, where the famous north wall is in closest proximity to shore and easily accessible from their entry and exit ladders and docks. Have lunch at Cobalt Coast or Lighthouse Point and you can shower and change after your dive. This will save a lot of time and allow you to proceed directly to Pappagallo for the dinner of a lifetime!
