the United Kingdom (UK) a culturally diverse, historically significant, socially alive, environmentally aware, visually stimulating experience. Heriot-Watts main campus is situated in Edinburgh, the stunning capital city of Scotland, and is a one hour flight from London and about two hours from many major European cities.
Testament to the fact that students in Dubai are studying the exact same degrees as our students in the UK, all our management, engineering and built environment undergraduate students can transfer to our UK campus at any time after their first year in Dubai. With guaranteed accommodation at our beautiful campus, full academic support and welfare advice, this is an option that is very popular with our current students. The main campus is situated in Edinburgh, the capital city of Scotland. Regarded as the Best small country in the world, Scotland provides an unrivalled student experience for students from all over the globe. The Edinburgh Campus is known as one of the most international in the United Kingdom as over one third of its students are from countries outside of the UK, including India, Malaysia, China, Mexico and Europe. If that is not an invitation to learn more about the world around you what is? The international opportunities do not end after graduation from Heriot-Watt University! The Scottish Executive has developed a pioneering initiative, known as the Fresh Talent Initiative, which allows Heriot-Watt University graduates to remain in Scotland to work full-time for two years. For more information visit: Name: Neeru Kundvani Dubai Edinburgh transfer student Course: Management with Marketing MA (Hons) So far my stay at Edinburgh has been a great experience. I am a people-person and have been able to meet students from all over the world; fitting in has not been a problem because of the great people. The University knows us well and has supported us throughout our time here in Edinburgh. The main concern my parents had was my accommodation, and that too was handled perfectly by the University. As international students we were given high priority according to our preferences. I was also assigned a mentor who has been very supportive. Even though studying abroad is a fantastic opportunity for everyone, I believe Dubai has given us good prospects. In terms of education, we are not treated differently; as much as we thought being in the bigger campus might mean completely different lectures or exams, we were mistaken its all exactly the same, just colder!

Many students in Dubai opt for the Degree Entry Programme as a sound means of bridging the qualification gap between school and university. There are many reasons why students decide to join our popular foundation year. Firstly, some students need to improve their English writing skills or gain a better understanding of UK study methods or it may be that the certificate obtained in their native country may not be accepted by Heriot-Watt University. Finally, the Degree Entry Programme will help if school leaving qualifications do not immediately qualify students for admission to the first year of our management or engineering degrees. Heriot-Watt offers two different oneyear Degree Entry Programmes that are specifically tailored to the Bachelor degrees that we teach, giving our Degree Entry Programme graduates the optimum start in their university career. The two pathways have modules including:
ENGINEErING pAtHWAy
Modules in: Entry Physics Entry Mathematics The Programme is taught over two semesters, beginning in the middle of September and ending in June the following year. The students will pass end of unit tests in all subjects followed by final examinations in June. Both streams put strong emphasis on language skills not only spoken English but written and academic English also. In addition to the academic modules, the course will include study skills and students will experience team work and improve their research skills. A combination of teaching methods is used so that all students will be prepared to progress onto the undergraduate programme of their choice. After completion of the Degree Entry Programme and gaining grade B in all subjects, students on their particular pathway will successfully progress on to their chosen degree course. I look forward to welcoming you to one of our two courses, designed with you in mind.

The School of Management and Languages, one of the largest in the University, is committed to providing our students with the education and personal development skills required to meet the needs of todays international employers. The emphasis on student choice can be seen in the flexibility of the courses we offer in Dubai. Currently, Management students can choose from four different undergraduate degrees and one postgraduate degree. With the undergraduate degrees, there is a common first year where students take the same core modules allowing students to defer their ultimate subject choice beyond first year and effectively tailor their degrees to suit their needs and those of the modern business world. Our Masters degree in Strategic Project Management differentiates itself from other project management offerings by providing greater emphasis on the strategic requirement in managing a portfolio of projects to deliver organisational goals. Russia and Kazakhstan, among other countries. There is also the opportunity for all our undergraduate students to transfer to our main campus in Edinburgh after their first year of study here in Dubai.
EMpLOyMENt SUCCESS
Our excellent track record in graduate employment is proof that we produce graduates equipped with the skills and attributes required by employers in the Gulf Region and beyond. The MA in Accountancy and Finance, for example, is fully accredited by the ACCA, the global body for professional accountants, and many of our graduates are entering training contracts with professional firms and will qualify as chartered accountants. Our Strategic Project Management graduates have taken up various posts with an impressive list of companies and non-profit organisations and we hope that you will be joining them in pursuing a successful career after completion of your course.
learning. We encourage student participation in their classroom and tutorial environments and students are expected to have carried out independent study prior to the topic being discussed. We want our students to have views and opinions but these should be based on an understanding of the topic or issue before stating them. Students are encouraged to express themselves clearly and articulately as communication skills are increasingly important in graduate recruitment and hence the stress we place on presentations and group working. I look forward to welcoming you to the School of Management and Languages in Dubai in the near future.

Accountancy has often been described as the language of business and it has long been recognised that an understanding of accounting and finance is an essential prerequisite for those who intend to pursue a career in commerce, industry or public administration. The increasingly complex environment within which both financial and international business is conducted and the development and spread of computerised techniques continue to reinforce the need for such an understanding. The value of such studies is also recognised by professional accountancy and allied societies which offer, to approved graduates, substantial examination exemptions and reduced periods of pre-qualifying service. The Heriot-Watt course in Accountancy and Finance is a specialist degree, particularly well suited to those seeking entry into the accountancy profession and careers in financial services or financial management. The aim of the course is to encourage development of cognitive skills so that as students progress, they develop knowledge and understanding, learn to apply that knowledge and understanding, and become versed in the deeper approach to learning, evidenced by powers of analysis, synthesis and evaluation. Successful completion of our Accountancy and Finance course provides the maximum number of exemptions from professional examination bodies including the ACCA.
FIRST YEAR Students will follow introductory modules in four key subject themes of Accountancy and Finance, and Economics and Management. SECOND YEAR Students will begin to broaden their study
of Accountancy and Finance. The accountancy subjects include Financial Reporting, Management Accounting, and Group Accounting. The finance subjects include Investment and Portfolio Theory and Corporate Finance.
FOURTH YEAR The final year provides an opportunity for specialisation, with studies in International and Contemporary Issues in relevant Accounting and Finance areas. Students must also undertake a dissertation in an area of accounting or finance that is of particular interest to them.

An understanding of business and finance is an essential prerequisite for those who intend to pursue a career in commerce, industry or public administration. Operating in international markets requires an understanding of international accounting standards, taxation, mergers and acquisitions, corporate finance, and exchange and interest rates. It is not surprising that there is a continuing demand for graduates who have specialised in these subjects. The value of such studies is also recognised by professional bodies which offer substantial examination exemptions and reduction of pre-qualifying service to approved graduates. The Heriot-Watt course in Business and Finance is a joint degree with equal emphasis given to the subject areas of management and finance. The aim of the course is to encourage the development of cognitive skills so that as students progress, they develop knowledge and understanding, learn to apply that knowledge and understanding, and become versed in the deeper approach to learning evidenced by powers of analysis, synthesis and evaluation.

The Management course follows a number of guiding principles, which mirror the values of managers of leading organisations and reflect current management thinking. In the first two years on all Management degrees you follow a common programme which provides a strong grounding in the principles of modern business management and also introduces the more functional areas of management including Marketing, Human Resource Management (HRM) and Organisational Behaviour. Our students are not here just to learn facts and figures. Senior managers everywhere stress that personal skills are as important as education and intellect. Our aim is to help you become the manager of the future and students are encouraged to develop practical management and problemsolving skills through the team development modules and other group projects. We believe that the real basis for management is experience. Strategic Project Management at Heriot-Watt University differentiates itself from other project management courses by providing greater emphasis on the strategic requirement in managing a portfolio of projects to deliver organisational goals. In this way, Strategic Project Management encompasses both project management as a process to deliver end products and change management as a process of capturing the rational and emotional buy-in of the people affected by change to ensure its success. A postgraduate qualification in Strategic Project Management would benefit those whether in business, engineering, IT or science whose job involves managing or directing work that has a strategic focus and a defined end goal. This course reflects the content of (1) The Project Management Institutes Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge and (2) The Association of Project Managements Project Management Body of Knowledge.

Engineers use their imagination and knowledge of mathematics, physics and chemistry to devise, apply and manage the technologies that are fundamental to the well-being and advancement of society. Taking Dubai as an example, the construction of iconic buildings such as the Burj Al Arab, which reveals its supporting structure for all to see, and of course the Burj Dubai as it breaks world height records, would not be possible without significant input from wellqualified, professional engineers. And engineers will be fundamental to the evolution of Dubais manufacturing industry, this being accelerated by the creation of Industrial City. Furthermore all this must be undertaken with due concern for the impact of our lifestyles on climate change. The provision of such well-qualified and able engineers is at the core of Heriot-Watt Universitys 180 year heritage, and we are proud to be able to offer our internationally recognised and respected degrees here in Dubai through our School of Engineering and Physical Sciences. We are now entering our third year of operation of our undergraduate Mechanical and Electronic and Electrical Engineering degrees, and for the first year, we are delighted to be offering a BSc in Engineering and Management. The performance of our students has been outstanding - for the second year running, a Dubai student has won the overall best student prize. This type of achievement proves that Dubai students are making the best of the opportunity that studying engineering at Heriot-Watt University in Dubai provides. All our students enjoy an intimate teaching environment which blends conventional lecturing and tutorials with interactive on-line material in our Virtual Leaning Environment (VLE). Labs and extra-curricular projects such as our Robot Challenge develop knowledge and practical skills. Our final year individual student projects are designed to establish contact with local industry, and we will favour projects that seek to minimise environmental issues. Furthermore we provide access to probably the best e-library in the region, the same e-library as our students in Edinburgh, enabled by the power of the internet. Access to the e-library and the VLE is possible from both the campus and the students home, optimising the use of study time and allowing our students families to see something of the teaching and learning process we provide. Of course, this is invaluable to our postgraduate Energy students, who will study via Distance Learning. Our Mechanical Engineering degree is accredited by the IMechE in the UK, on the basis that the learning outcomes, the academic quality control processes and the standards achieved are all the same in Dubai as in Edinburgh. Graduates of our postgraduate degree in Energy are able to gain membership of the professional association. We therefore welcome applications from well-qualified and motivated students who wish to benefit from a high-quality learning experience and gain a degree accredited by the appropriate British professional institutions. Such degrees will prepare them for employment in the engineering profession in Dubai, the region or beyond. Together we can make a difference.

Modern society needs high quality Mechanical Engineering graduates for their professional mechanical engineering skills and expertise. Mechanical Engineering offers an exciting environment where many skills are brought together to enable the undergraduate student to understand how products are engineered, manufactured and supported through the technological impact on processes and infrastructure; how and where analytical engineering science and mathematics impact on these; how the use and management of resources is important to society and business competitiveness; and how it is necessary to communicate and present concepts to engineers and non-engineers alike. Mechanical engineers play key roles in all industrial sectors ranging from aerospace, oil and gas, through food and transport to manufacturing, chemical and entertainment industries. Professional mechanical engineers are at the forefront of the management of the earths natural resources by optimising the conflicting demands of the modern world. These challenges are clearest in the field of energy production where the long term supply of energy continues to be an issue of major technical and political importance. The degree is accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE).
