Volunteers are an important part of the Wood River Land Trust's work in caring for protected lands, planning events, and conducting office and field work. The guidelines outline the volunteer recruitment, screening, roles, training, supervision, and recognition. Volunteers are recruited through newsletters, emails, newspapers and event signups. Potential volunteers are screened using a questionnaire. Volunteer roles include land preservation workdays, field data collection and analysis, preserve adoption, and event planning. Training and supervision are provided for all volunteer activities. Volunteers are recognized in newsletters, with thank you letters, at an annual event, and those providing 20+ hours receive a membership.

Wood River Land Trust Volunteer Program Guidelines
Volunteers are an important component of Wood River Land Trusts work. Volunteers help us care for the land entrusted to our protection, plan and implement community events, and conduct office work and fieldwork. I. Recruitment Volunteers are recruited using advertisements and messages in: A. Our quarterly newsletter; B. Email blasts to members and other interested parties; C. Local newspapers; and D. Information gathered from event sign-up sheets, which have a spot to designate ones interest in volunteer work. II. Screening Potential volunteers are screened using information gathered from the attached questionnaire. III. Scope of Work Wood River Land Trust uses volunteers to: A. Plan and participate in workdays on local preserves; B. Conduct fieldwork on preserves and project sites including the Big Wood River; C. Collate and synthesize fieldwork data; D. Adopt-a-Preserve, in which volunteers work with a group of your neighbors to maintain the health and beauty of a Wood River Land Trust preserve in their neighborhood; E. Help prepare membership and community mailings; and F. Plan and implement community events. NOTE: To protect confidentiality and avoid potential conflicts of interest, volunteers shall not participate in tasks that give them access to proprietary or sensitive information about Wood River Land Trust or its supporters. NOTE: Volunteers may not use heavy or potentially dangerous equipment such as chainsaws, log splitters, chippers, all-terrain vehicles, etc., without proper training, experience, and/or certification. IV. Training & Supervision A. At the beginning of each volunteer activity (whether in the field or in the office), an appropriate staff member will provide a brief orientation about Wood River Land Trusts work, the job, and its importance to Wood River Land Trusts goals. B. All volunteers will be supervised by a Wood River Land Trust staff member. Volunteers doing fieldwork and/or manual labor will be supervised by a staff member at the site of the volunteer activity. VI. Recognition Volunteers will be recognized: A. Once per year in our newsletter, and B. With thank you letters sent after each volunteer activity or at the completion of a set of related activities, and C. At a once-yearly event. D. Volunteers who donate 20 or more hours of their time in one calendar year will receive a one-year complimentary membership. Volunteer Program Guidelines October 4, 2007
