Director Tom Tavee traveled to the unique village of Ban Kok Sa-Nga (population 655) in Thailand. lt's the only place like it in the world and for a good reason. What started over 50 years ago as an advertising gimmick for some country villagers has turned into a deadly cottage industry; in this strange little village the King Cobra, has be(ome both a pet and a busines partner. The entire village-fiom elders to children-works as one and performs relentlesly at their temple to

are commonplace, but unbelievably the village has no anti-venom to combat the deadly toxins and the nearest hospital is over an hour away. Tavee was able to obtain inaedible access into the lives of the fighters and has suc(eeded in ac(urately and dramatically documenting this dangerous performance-sport ofsnake-boxing, the art

glorious performances turned in by an all-star (ast. determination to do things his own way led to a virtual bla(klist in America. Most of his films are taught in film schools now but in 1970 he was flat on his ass, turning out movies that would have been routine action fare in lesser hands but were transfigured by his phenomenal talent and skill. nursploitation films were big in the 70s. And like the other"working girls"exploitation movies they hold up pretty well for the most part. They (ertainly reflect the tone oftheir times better than bigger budgeted movies ever could, and by providing the nude scenes that drive-in moviegoers all overthe (ountry wanted,
they functioned as ideological Trojan horses, smuggling their anarcho-rommunal
message into hundreds of unsuspecting towns. THE Y0UNG NUR5E5 follows the formula set by Stephanie Rothman's THE STUDENT NUR5[5 - we meet several very attradive nurses and as their character arcs diverge and ronverge again, hot-button social issues like drugs and abortion are explored. The cool thing about biker movies is that usually even when they're bad, they?e still good. Nobody would consider THE GIORY ST0MPERS a good film but it has a couple of things going for it that make up for all the corny lines and the off-the-rack plotline. Number one is the score by Davie Allan and the Arrows. The whole movie is drenched in Allanl fuzz guitar and boogaloo backbeat. lt sounds so god damn good you'll want to run right out of the theater and beat someone to death with a chain. The second great thing about this movie is Dennis Hopper as the really scuzzy bad guy. Hopper looks like he just snorted the contents of an entire veterinary pharmacy before walking onto the set. I tried to count the number of"mans" and "you knows" that litter his line readings but I couldn't count that high. All the other a(ors in the movie, most ofwhom were veterans of beach party movies and the Mkkey Mouse Club, look completely terrified of Hopper, and you get the real impression from watching this that he wasn't really sure what was real and what was make-believe - which sucks for the poor bit player getting pistol-whipped, but makes for splendid realism for the moviegoing public. The boundaries between life and

literature - the real and the imagined - seemed to be a favorite theme of Losey's, so it was a small wonder that he would finally

direct THE

in which a highly succesful

author

her towards a relationship with an accommodating poet/gigolo/small-time drug smuggler. 0nce the unlikely pair fall in love, it seems quite unfair, yet all too human, that Fielding would explode in a jealous rage. The screenplay by Tom
