INTRODUCCIN
INTRODUCTION
It is five in the afternoon on March 13, 1999. I am tracking down some editions in the used bookshops on Donceles Street, right in the center of Mexico City. In one of them, quite close to the Templo Mayor core of Tenochtitlan-MexicoI find a popular book on how to wrestle, printed on newsprint. After my contemporary find, I leave the bookstore carrying other publicationsmagazines, books of literature, books on sports and various manualsand head toward the Zcalo subway station in the heart of the city, hoping to avoid the tumult which, due to the time (now six in the afternoon), is about to begin. Just in front of me centered in the main plaza, I see our Mexican flag hanging from a pole, about to be lowered in daily, military ceremony. Beside it, a static crowd mills around another group of people, this time dancers moving to accompanying drumbeats. Most of the onlookers are workers who just left their officeswearing suits and ties, briefcases in hand. Now, divested of their desks, they watch as those who identify themselves as shell dancers stomp and whirl, dressed in clothing with pre-Hispanic allusions; some are barefoot, others wear traditional leather sandals and rattling seashells on their ankles; all are immersed in ceremonial evolution: healing and purification. Converged in the same space, two realities clash. While I watch the ceremony, a certain person catches my eye: he leaves
Demin Flores Corts
his briefcase on the ground and suddenly joins the prevailing rhythms, continuing the urban cosmogonic ritual. Becoming part of the tribe, he is now crowned with a headdress and immediately proclaims he is god; he becomes part of the collective recreation. After a while, he returns to where he left his briefcase (which is miraculously still there), removes the headdress and gives it back; his body disappears into the subway entrance. With this visual document, I developed a series of drawings, a way of working which recuperates, cuts out and assembles images. This body of work is gathered together in the book at hand, a compilation of a series that comprises imagery moving toward underlying notions of territory, memory and identity. The drawings organize and join symbols, references to cultural practices, found and modified images, apostrophes of art history and various formal visual languages. It is a proposal staked on the impurity of content: a mixing of irony and playfulness, the political and social, a certain play between logic and the absurd.
