Student Spotlight: Cory Hamilton

mr. Cory hamilton, a Dallas native and graduate of W.W. samuell high school, will be a senior Biology major at Jarvis Christian College during the 20112012 academic year. mr. hamilton was chosen to present his research paper, study of signal Peptide interaction within the Archaeal signal recognition Particle, at the Emerging researchers national (Ern) Conference in science, Technology, Engineering, and mathematics (sTEm) held in Washington, D.C. on February 23-26, 2011. Cory is an intern for Dr. shakhawat Bhuiyan, Associate Professor of Biology, and has worked on the research for several years. Dr. Bhuiyan has encouraged Cory, guided him through the process of how to conduct research, and has been one of his strongest supporters. Cory is once again a Presidential scholar, and a member of Tri Beta honor society. he will spend his summer at george Washington University interning with the Quality Education for minorities (QEm) network internship Program conducting biomedical research. The internship is funded by the national science Foundation (nsF) who provides many students with these types of opportunities. interview with Cory: What are your plans after graduation? i have two plans actually; i want to go to graduate school and pursue my m.D. and Ph.D at a top ranked school. Depending on how high my score is on the mCAT will determine whether or not ill pursue medical school. In what organizations are you involved? i am a member of Tri-Beta, Beta kappa Chi, and national institute of science. These organizations deal with scholastics in the science field. in addition, they help to improve students social networking within the science community. What do you like to do in your free time? in my free time, i tend to either read or practice on the acoustic guitar. i like the latter more though. its funny, because i never really had any interest in music until about 3 years ago. Why did you decide to attend Jarvis? i heard about Jarvis from my high school counselor and from people i knew at church. i attended AsEP and really enjoyed the college classes. i havent regretted my decision of coming to Jarvis since. What is your most memorable moment about your freshman year? i believe it was how college classes were taught. i expected the professors to be something like in the movies where they really dont aid you at all. i was really surprised when i asked for help and they gave it to me. interestingly enough, thats also another reason why ive chosen to stay at Jarvis. Who is your favorite Professor? Thats actually a tough question. i like taking hard classes and a professor that can explain the subject well. i guess under those circumstances, it would have to be Dr. Bhuiyan. The first time i took his classes, he made biology in itself, so easy. What is your favorite class? i love mythology. You hear about myths youve never thought about or knew. This causes you to look at myths in a different light. What is one lesson that you learned last year that you would like to share? Always stay on top of your work. in some instances you may have gotten behind in your assignments and the professor gives you more work to do in addition to the work you have already. Your mole hill now becomes a mountain of paper work.

Jarvis Christian College Goodwin Nature Trail Opens

on march 25, 2011, Jarvis Christian College held the ribbon cutting ceremony for its new nature trail. After 19 months of securing permits from the Corp of Engineers, the nature Trail opened. students, faculty, staff, alumni and guests, heard mr. Juan merriweather, from the Texas Forest service, talk about the importance of preserving the wildlife. The nearly 2-mile trail passes through and around natural wetlands found in the northeastern corner of the Jarvis property. The trail includes an elevated boardwalk exceeding 1,500 feet in length. The plant and animal diversity of the trail area is still being studied, but at least 20 species of non-flying mammals of squirrel size or larger are known to be present, and more than 40 species of trees have been identified within 15 feet of the trail corridor. The trail will be open to the public on a regular basis. it was a beautiful day and after the ribbon cutting ceremony, the attendees were encouraged to walk the trail. The two-mile trail winds through the woods with native plants, trees, and wildlife and marshlands on either side. in recognition of Dr. goodwins diligent and hard work, the President saw fit to name the nature trail after him. Dr. goodwin was instrumental in obtaining the $200,000 grant from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department on behalf of Jarvis Christian College. one of the requirements is that the College match 25 percent of the grant. To date, Dr. goodwin said about $190,000 has been spent building the boardwalk, walking trail and outdoor classroom/pavilion. The outdoor classroom is located adjacent to the north side of the meyer science and math Building. Jarvis Christian College is transforming lives. According to Dr. goodwin, Biology and science students can meet in the outdoor classroom, and area schools will be invited to use the facility. scouts can enjoy the nature trail and study the plants and wildlife, also. When alums and friends come to the campus, everyone will be able to visit the nature trail which features a 1,600-foot boardwalk over the marshland. There are several areas that one will be able to stop and enjoy the scenery, one of which is the historic marker that was dedicated in 2008. in the months to come, Wood County master gardener will assist in the beautification of key areas. Additionally, an Urban medicinal garden is planned and area native plants will be planted as well. The nature trail will be open to the public from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 pm daily.

Million Dollar Baby Campaign

JARVIS CHRISTIAN COLLEGE NATIONAL ALUMNI ( JCC/NAA) PLEDGES $1,000,000
Jarvis Christian College national Alumni Association (JCC/nAA) launched a campaign to celebrate 100 years of excellence at the school and promote the Colleges theme of imagining the Possibilities . . . one learner at a Time. The goal of the million Dollar Baby Campaign is to raise $1,000,000 for Jarvis by the homecoming Celebration in march 2012. Proceeds from this campaign will benefit the JCC/nAA scholarship fund and retention efforts of freshman students through the JCC lEgACY Program which focuses on assisting new students in becoming successful in college. organizers of the million Dollar Baby, Fred hearns, and ron hay, Class of 67, are asking that all alumni contribute in the effort. JCC/nAA recognizes that each alumnus does not have the ability to write a check to Jarvis for $5,000, $10,000, or $25,000. Therefore, the JCC/nAA and organizers of the million Dollar Baby Campaign have developed the following method so that the campaign can reach this goal. The JCC/nAA is asking that each class (1960-2010) participate in the campaign and that each class collectively donates $25,000. Each alumni class will be divided into ten teams, with five class members on each team. These ten teams are asked to contribute or raise $2,500 or more, which amounts to $500 for each team member. The JCC/nAA is confident that every class member can contribute or raise this amount. if every alumnus were to ask twenty (20) family members, friends, co-workers or church members to donate $25 to Jarvis, each member will have his or her $500. if an alumnus does not have the capacity to personally donate $500 then such alumnus may also reach his or her $500 goal by selling 100 or more raffle tickets. Please see the list of coordinators below to determine who your contact person is for your class. Dr. John D. Mangram Ministers Conference

The bells rang once more as Jarvis Christian College hosted the 5th Annual Dr. John D. mangram ministers Conference and Bell ringer service Award & scholarship luncheon on April 12th and 13th. For more than 50 years, Dr. John D. mangram, Professor Emeritus, has trained some of the most dynamic men and women in ministry, earning him the title, The Teacher of Preachers. The theme of the Conference this year was: Preaching in real Time. The focus was the challenge of keeping preaching real in a time when we are bombarded with receiving information instantaneously, Facebook, tweeting, texting, etc., are elements of attraction being driven by the entertainment industry. if we are to continue positively, attracting young people to church we must preach to them in a manner they will understand and keep it (our preaching) real. The conference was also an opportunity to support the next generation of ministry innovators by making gifts to the Dr. John D. mangram scholarship .

Dr. Angela Chambers

Commencement was held on saturday, may 7, 2011, at 10:30 a.m. in the Anthony robinson Varsity gymnasium of the E.W. rand health, Physical Education, and recreation Center. The graduating seniors all wore the Jarvis Bulldog colors of blue and gold robes. honored at the Commencement were the 50 year golden graduates, class of 1961; mr. Earl Culbert of Alexandria, louisiana, and mr. laray Johnson, from Big sandy, Texas. other honors went to Dr. ralph Brown, Professor Emeritus who was thanked for his dedication to Jarvis and the students. Trustee, nancy shaw, who retired from the Board at the may meeting, was also recognized by Dr. Thomas for her years of service. The speaker for the 99th Commencement ceremony was Dr. Angela Chambers of Tyler. Dr. Chambers began her presentation with moment for life by nikkie minaj, which resonated for the 2011 graduating class. she went on to say that this was a great moment for Jarvis Christian College as we approach the Centennial Anniversary 100 years of educating men and women to make a difference in society. Dr. Chambers message was simple - have a Vision. she told the graduating seniors that it would be through developing a vision and sticking to it, that they would have success in their careers and their future. Proverbs 29:18 teacheswhere there is no vision, the people perish. Another point of emphasis given to the JCC students and Commencement attendees, was that you can learn from James 2:17: Faith, without works, is dead. she encouraged everyone to remember the moment, as we continue, imagining the Possibilities.

Centennial Celebration Continues Calling all Alumns, Where Are You Now?
As you may know, the College will be celebrating its 100th year anniversary soon. This celebration promises to be exciting and it is hoped that all Jarvisites will participate in the series of planned events. There will be many activities celebrating people and organizations, such as: miss Jarvis; miss UnCF; greek organizations; teachers/educators; athletes; choir members; and band members. As part of the celebration, Dr. John D. mangram is writing a book that tells the history of Jarvis Christian College. The book details Jarvis from the beginning to today. The desire is to include as much information as possible about how and why Jarvis started, information about the founders, students, faculty, staff, and trustees, as well as the current status of the College. The intent is that this be a comprehensive history. Therefore, for inclusion in parts of the history of Jarvis Christian College, certain features will require contributions by individuals and/or organizations. For example, there will be a section on the various young ladies who have been miss Jarvis. This will include photographs and a brief biographical statement. While the College has the photographs of most campus queens and knows when they were crowned, the College does not have current photographs. We are currently gathering information and are asking that if you previously served as ms. Jarvis., please contact mr. Christopher Wooten, Director of Alumni Affairs, at 903-769-5724 or cwooten@jarvis.edu to ensure the Alumni Affairs office has a picture and the year you were crowned. ALAbAMA CHAPTER
The Alabama Area Alumni Chapter of Jarvis Christian College is alive and well. Their 2010 Theodore Ted Hawkins Scholarship Banquet was held in Birmingham in November and was a success. They have approximately 22 active members from all over the state of Alabama. The members love Jarvis Christian College, and work very hard every year to support the scholarship banquet and the College. The Alabama Chapter meets every other month, usually in Birmingham. However, their January meetings were held in Montgomery and hosted by one of themembers, Mrs. Jessie Daniels Turner, Class of 1957. The Alabama Chapter is asking for your prayers for their most senior member, Mr. Cleveland Bedgood, Class of 1955, who had a stroke in November, 2010. He is on the road to recovery, but he needs your prayers. The Chapter is proud to announce that in May of 2010, thesecond Alabama student graduated from Jarvis Christian College, and is now pursuing an MBA degree. Currently, there are four Alabama students enrolled at the college and the Chapter is very proud of all of them. One of our main goals as a Chapter is student recruitment. Because of the emphasis on the upcoming Million $$ Babycampaign by the National Alumni to raise one million dollars to commemorate Jarvis Centennial, the Alabama Chapter will not hold its annual scholarship banquet in November, 2011. Instead, all of their fund-raising efforts will focus on the Centennial. The President, Eugene Harris, Class of 1966, has as one of his goals to increase our membership to 40 active members by 2014. He is encouraging all Jarvis alums currently residing in the state of Alabama to join the Chapter and support their efforts to help our beloved Jarvis Christian College.
