Internal/External JOB POSTING Outreach Community Programmer

KNH is seeking a self motivated, high energy, compassionate individual with experience working with seniors to oversee the running of the Outreach Program to older adults at Maplecrest Apartments. Working collaboratively and under the general direction of the Seniors Coordinator, the Community Outreach Programmer plays a key role in implementing and delivering programs and activities to low income older adults living at Maplecrest, a subsidized housing building owned and operated by the Shalom Legion Branch, located on the Westside of Vancouver. He/she is also actively engaged in planning, developing and evaluating the programs and activities identified by the tenants, using a strength based participant directed model of service delivery. Key duties and responsibilities required: To work as part of a team to provide a safe, welcoming and inclusive environment for all tenants To build close working relationships with funders, senior serving organizations, health providers, multicultural organizations, and other existing community programs to support tenants Plan, organize and deliver the following identified activities, programs services and supports: Social Plan daytrips, in-house celebrations (cultural birthdays), seniors-based interest groups, (e.g. knitting, card games), special events, language support (30% of seniors are Russian-speaking) Education - Plan educational talks and workshops on topics of interest Accessibility Plan grocery shopping trips and activities that promote socialization and accessibility around food security and food education Advocacy Recruit volunteers to train to be advocates to provide support to tenants as needed Organize and facilitate a monthly Tenant Outreach Advisory committee meeting To provide community information and resources to tenants as required To recruit, train, evaluate and support tenants as volunteers Arrange set up and take down of equipment and supplies in order to ensure smooth delivery of the program To develop a training program for tenants who would like to be volunteer community advocates To gather statistical information on contacts made and to prepare and submit monthly progress reports Communicate and promote the program to the tenants and design promotional materials as required Monitor program budget and develop a tracking system for expenditures Prepare funding proposals for the program and identify new funding opportunities Provide detailed reports to funders that are both qualitative and quantitative To attend meetings that are relevant to the program

Qualifications and skills required: Post secondary education in a related field or equivalent training and experience Strong skills and experience working with older adults and volunteers Excellent communicating, writing, planning and problem solving abilities Proven ability to work effectively with diverse populations and with a broad range of community and public partners Passion for supporting older adults to overcome social isolation and encourage the building of their strengths and active participation in the community Strong understanding and commitment to community development principles Knowledge and awareness of issues surrounding diversity and multiculturalism Willingness to be flexible and adaptable in the workplace

Experience with Microsoft Office, Internet & Publisher Attitudes and values which are compatible with the goals and philosophy of Kitsilano Neighbourhood House Willingness to engage in the development and implementation of special events and celebrations hosted by the Neighbourhood House Class 4 or ability and willingness to attain one Food Safe Certificate First Aid Level 1 Certificate Preference will be given to applicants who speak English and Russian Job Details: Salary: $17.50 - $18.47 per hour Schedule: 17.5 hours per week (could be extended), occasional evenings and weekend work Location: 6th & Maple Expected Start Date: ASAP Job application closing date: August 26/2011 Application Process: As per Association of Neighbourhood Houses HR polices, all factors being equal, first priority will be given to internal and local applicants.
