Concurrent Connection Issues
NetCharts Server can be installed on Windows NT 4.0 Workstation, Windows NT 4.0 Server, Windows
2000 Professional, Windows 2000 Server, Windows 2003 and Windows XP.
D Note: Windows NT 4.0 Workstation and Windows 2000 Professional have a limit on the number of
concurrent connections. This limitation will directly affect performance.
If the target environment expects more than 15 concurrent connections, we recommend installing
NetCharts Server on Windows NT Server, Windows 2000 Server or Windows 2003.
Solaris
NetCharts Server installs a Java Runtime Environment 1.4.2. Sun prescribes a list of patches that should
be applied to Solaris in order for this JRE to run correctly. The list of patches changes frequently and is
available at http://sunsolve.sun.com/pub-cgi/show.pl?target=patches/J2SE
HP-UX
NetCharts Server installs a Java Runtime Environment 1.4.2. HP prescribes a list of patches that should
be applied to HP-UX in order for this JRE to run correctly. The list of patches changes frequently and is
available at http://www.hp.com/products1/unix/java/patches/index.html.
AIX
NetCharts Server installs a Java Runtime Environment 1.4.2. IBM prescribes a list of patches that should
be applied to AIX in order for this JRE to run correctly. The list of patches changes frequently and is
available at
http://www-128.ibm.com/developerworks/java/jdk/aix/142/sdkguide.aix32.htm#aixenv
Linux
NetCharts Server installs a Java Runtime Environment 1.4.2. Sun prescribes a list of system requirements
that a Linux system must meet to run this JRE correctly. These system requirements are available at
http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/install-linux.html
To start the installation process in graphical mode, double click on the NetChartsServer installation
executable file. Please be patient as there may be little visible activity for the first few minutes1. The
following splash screen will appear when the installation process is ready to begin:
If the installation machines video adapter/driver has less than 256 colors, the installation will not work. Make
sure your video adapter/driver supports at least 256 colors.
Other Prompts
A series of additional prompts will present several click through license agreements. Other prompts will
provide the opportunity to install optional components, such as data base drivers.
NetCharts Server Port Assignment
This step allows you to change the NetCharts Server port on which it can be accessed. The default port is
8001. You may set this to any port that you wish, other than other port numbers greater than 65000, port
numbers currently in use by other programs on the computer, or port 8002 which is used internally by
NetCharts Server.
D WARNING: Setting the port to a port number that conflicts with other programs can cause NetCharts
Server and the other programs to not respond properly. For example, if you install NetCharts Server
on a machine running a HTTP server, and then change the port number to 80, both NetCharts Server
and the web server will attempt to respond to requests on that port.
10
The console mode prompts have the same presentation order and content as the graphical mode prompts.
11
NetCharts Server can be configured to automatically start at boot time by creating symbolic links to
$NCSINSTALL/Server/bin/NetChartsServerControl. This requires root permission. The location of
the links depends on the host system:
Solaris:
/etc/init.d/netchartsserver
/etc/rc2.d/S99NetChartsServer
Linux:
/etc/rc.d/init.d/netchartsserver
/etc/rc.d/rc2.d/S99NetChartsServer
HP-UX:
/sbin/init.d/netchartsserver
/sbin/rc2.d/S99NetChartsServer
NetChartsServer
NetChartsServer starts a NetCharts Server. It sets environment variables for Java, and calls a C program,
ESStart, to launch the server.
