Link between Indonsia and Hadramaut, Yemen

Salaamu aleikum Can anyone please expand on how yemenis, from Hadramaut, contributed to the spread of Islam in Indonesia? I've heard something about how just a handful of merchants converted the population. Is this true?

It's definately true. These nine people, majority of whom were Husayni Sayyids, are now known to the Indonesians and Malaysians as the 9 Awliya' or Wali Sanga, most of whom were related to this family: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Azmatkhan

Assalamu Alaikum An excellent reference is T.J. Arnold's "The Spread of Islam in the World". It contains a whole chapter on the archipelagos. I have forgotten most of the finer details since I last read it so can't relate some of the historic facts. Wassalam
