Solution
Possible Cause
Jaw adjustment bolt too tight
Follow procedure for adjusting jaw bolt (see diagram 2) Block trailer wheels, idle truck backwards in reverse, apply parking brake, place in park, re-try to uncouple trailer Lower trailer so front of king pin box contacts the middle of the hitch first. This will let the hitch level itself to allow smooth coupling and uncoupling (see diagram 3) Squirt some WD40 or oil into the locking bar tube, work handle loose, open and close several times, and re-grease locking bar (see diagram 1) Place a piece of wood under the tire of the low side of truck to help level, then uncouple Contact Victoria Industries Limited at: Ph: 250-386-6231 Fax: 250-383-6533 Replace rubber bumpers (available at Victoria Industries Limited) Follow procedure for adjusting jaw bolt (see diagram 2) Install a new bolt and locking nut (available at Victoria Industries Limited) Check trailer manufacturers hitch weight. Shift weight towards front of trailer Check trailer manufacturers hitch weight. Shift weight towards back of trailer Re-locate hitch to above or slightly ahead of axle as described in the installation instructions Adjust addle bracket up or down on siderail plates to correct or king pin may need to be adjusted (if adjustable) Axle of trailer can be moved to top or bottom of leaf springs on most trailers to adjust the trailer height Riser block or other suspension extenders may need to be removed from high ground clearance 4x4s to accommodate trailer
Locking bar is gummed up with dirt Trailer is on uneven ground (This should not be a problem if you have a double pivot hitch) Locking bar is bent Single pivot hitch should have some tilt downward towards tailgate only, if some side to side, rubber bumper(s) damaged or missing Jaw adjustment bolt too loose Banging and/or bumping felt during stopping and starting from stop Jaw adjustment bolt missing Trailer hitch weight is light, which may cause bouncing at hitch Trailer hitch weight is too heavy Hitch was installed too far rear of the axle Improper hitch height setting and/or improper king pin height setting Trailer is not sitting level when coupled up (Front to back) Trailer suspension too high or low
Front end of truck feels light and steering feels loose and has swaying
Make sure the handle is lubricated between arrows at all times. To do this, pull handle all the way out and turn down then brush with grease. Diagram 1

Due to some of the configurations of corrugations in the bed of the box, we supply for use 4 3/8 x 1 x 5 spacers to prevent the box from collapsing in slightly during tightening of the bolts that go down through the box. With the space between the ribs wider and taller on some trucks, the end of the base rails do not span across the valley of the ribs creating a potential for crushing. The following procedures are recommended. **The use of the UL FB washers is not needed when using the 3/8 spacers for installations. Extra 3/8 x 1 x 5 shims are available from Victoria Industries Limited so they can be stocked by the dealer/installers along with any optional frame brackets.

Place the base rails on a flat level surface and insert and lock the side rail plates into the base rail holes as shown in the UM402001 instructions. Loosely bolt the saddle bracket (403PA) and the two cross braces to the side rails using the fasteners provided in the UM402001 carton. Tighten all the bolts. Unlock and remove the hitch assembly from the base rails and put to the side for later.
Truck Bed Drilling Instructions: Note: On some model years you will have to undo the emergency brake cable from the frame on the drivers side. Reattach after hitch installation. It may also make the install easier if the trucks rear end was lifted and blocked and/or remove the rear wheels to have more access for drilling of the frame. The four 2 diameter holes that need to be drilled through the box are done by the following method: 1. 2. Use the measurements shown in drawing #1 to mark out the four holes that will be drilled through the truck bed. Start out by measuring 37 3/4 from the end of the bottom of the truck bed (tailgate end) to a point on the left side of center of the bed and mark it. Do the same on the right side of center of the bed and mark it. Draw a line across the bed using these two marks as a reference. Measure out and find the center of the truck bed and draw a line from the front to the rear of the bed. Measure out 14 13/16 to either side of the middle centerline slightly ahead of the fender well and slightly behind the fender well. Draw a line between these two points. Do the same on the other side. Measure out (towards the cab) 13 1/2 from the points where the line that goes across the bed intersects with the two lines that are 14 13/16 off the center running the length of the bed. Mark these two points. There should now be four spots marked out for drilling. Double check that the rear to hole marks are exactly 37 3/4 from the end of the bed and that the front holes marks are exactly 13 1/2 forward of those marks. Check the hole marks from side to side and make sure they are exactly 29 5/8 apart from each other. Finally, check for square by measuring diagonally from opposite corners (drawing #2). The measurement should be the same both ways. It should measure 32 9/16.
3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9.
10.
After all the hole marks have been double checked for proper placement, use a center punch and hammer to mark out the spots for drilling. Drill the holes using a 2 hole saw. De-bur the holes using a small file and apply some touch up paint to match colour (not supplied).

Base Rail Installation: 1. With the four 2 holes drilled in the truck bed, insert the base rails one at a time with hole side up on top of the truck frame at the point just forward of the axle (drawing #3). Insert the first rail all the way to span across to the other side of the frame and slide it back towards the holes closest to the tailgate and position it under the holes. Repeat with the second base rail and position under the forward set of holes.
Insert at this point and slide rearward to position under holes
Drawing #3 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. With base rails in position below the bed and the base rail holes centered under the holes that were drilled in the bed of the truck, re-install and lock the hitch assembly into the base rails from the top side of the box. Measure and center the entire hitch assembly side to side and front to back so that it is as close to center of the holes in the bed. Attach the frame brackets (oval holes) to the tapped holes in the ends of the base rails using the 1/2 x 1 1/2 bolts and lock washers provided. Tighten the bolts to the base rails. For the 2011 model year installation is a no drill application that uses existing frame holes. See drawings below.
7.
8.
For 2010 and earlier models use the holes in the frame bracket plates as a guide and drill the frame in the two smaller mounting holes on each frame bracket with a 33/64 drill bit. You may want to drill smaller pilot holes to make drilling easier. The larger 3/4 hole and bolt is not used for these earlier installs. It is best to install a 1/2 x 1 1/2 bolt, washer, and lock nut after each hole is drilled to ensure there is no shifting of the hitch while drilling the next hole(s). Tighten all bolts.
9. 10.
Re-install the rear wheels (if removed), double check all fasteners for tightness, and lower truck (if raised). Unlock and lift the hitch assembly out of the box to make sure it can be removed and inserted with relative ease. If there was any shifting during installation that caused any binding, simply loosen the 4 bolts that attach the base rail to the frame brackets and realign the base rail and retighten. Ensure the side rail locking pins are turned and secured in the locked position with the safety pins. Install the hitch head to the saddle bracket.

Base Rail Installation: IF the base rails are unable to be slid into position because of insufficient space by the lip of the box bed, then use one of the following two methods to install the base rails. 1. A) Remove the mounting bolts that attach the box to the truck frame on one side only. Raise and block the box high enough so the base rails can be inserted (with locking pin holes up) and span across and rest on top of each side of the frame (drawing # 3). Lower and bolt the box back to the frame. Position base rails under holes drilled in bed. OR B) Locate a spot on both sides of the box support cross members on either side of the truck and cut and bend up a 3 1/2 wide section of the sheet metal lip where the bed and the fender well of the box join (drawing # 4). Insert base rails (with locking pin holes up) and span across and rest on top of each side of the frame (drawing # 3). Bend the sheet metal back down and position base rails under holes drilled in bed. IMPORTANT: Ensure that the shorter base rail with the angled crossbar is in the position closest to the tailgate with the vertical side of the angle beside the box cross member (drawing #5). Angle allows clearance for motor/pump assembly.

Truck Bed Drilling Instructions: Note: It may make the install easier if the trucks rear end was lifted and blocked and/or remove the rear wheels to have more access for drilling of the frame. The four 2 diameter holes that need to be drilled through the box are done by the following method: 23. 24. Use the measurements shown on the drill hole measurement chart to mark out the four holes that will be drilled through the truck bed. Start out by measuring the distance stated for the particular model of truck you are doing the installation on (refer to model on chart) from the end of the bottom of the truck bed (tailgate end) to a point on the left side of center of the bed and mark it. Double check that the rear to hole marks are exactly the distance stated for the model of truck you are doing the installation on (refer to model on chart) from the end of the bed and that the front holes marks are exactly 13 1/2 forward of those marks. Check the hole marks from side to side and make sure they are exactly 29 5/8 apart from each other. Finally, check for square by measuring diagonally from opposite corners (drawing #1). The measurement should be the same both ways. It should measure 32 9/16. After all the hole marks have been double checked for proper placement, use a center punch and hammer to mark out the spots for drilling.
33.
Drill the holes using a 2 hole saw. De-bur the holes using a small file and apply some touch up paint to match colour (not supplied).
Drawing # 1 Base Rail Installation: Heat Shield Removal: On some models there will be a heat shield that is attached to the bottom of the truck box that will have to have a section of it removed to make clearance for the base rail(s). 5. 6. 7. If the shield is below the level of the top of the frame, the base rail will have room to span across from frame rail to frame rail. If the heat shield is above the level of the top of the frame, the shield must be cut and removed before the base rails can be installed. Cut the heat shield just rear of the box support cross member that is at the front of the wheel well of the truck (see drawing # 2). Remove the screws that hold the rear section of the heat shield in place. A # 25 Torx head driver or and/or a 10 mm wrench or socket will be required to remove these screws. Remove the heat shield.

65 The Hijacker AutoSlide fifth wheel hitch comes assembled from the factory to help make the installation easier and quicker. The only prep work necessary is to bolt on the side plates. There are two different mounting systems for the AutoSlide hitch. It can be mounted on either the UL base rails or the UMS (Underbed Mounting System) base rails. Once the mounting system has been determined there is a side rail kit available for either. For the UL mounting system the UAS402 adaptor side plate kit (shown below) will be used and for the UMS mounting system the UMAS402 adaptor side plate kit will be used. Instructions to install both types are included in the carton with the adaptor plates as well as with these instructions.
Also included with these instructions is a procedure for adjusting the king pin capture plates. This is the most critical procedure that needs to be done in order to ensure the proper and safe use of the hitch. Please read and follow the instructions on how to adjust them VERY CAREFULLY. These instructions also include the procedure for replacing the slide disc(s) if necessary (shown below). The AutoSlide fifth wheel hitch comes with a limited five year warranty that covers most parts and labor. The slide disc is warranted for a period of one year as it is considered a consumable part.
CRITICALLY IMPORTANT
66
Capture plates must be adjusted to the width of the trailer pin box in order for the automatic slide mechanism to operate and function properly. Failure to do so can result in improper alignment and may cause damage to the hitch and/or trailer. It is best to measure the pin box width first and adjust the plates evenly on either side to 1/8 over the width of the pin box.
Bracket Adjustment
1. Back off both bolts that are on either end of the hitch head. 2. Ensure nuts on the under side of the hitch are loose, slide the top plates into proper position that is determined by the width of the trailer pin box. Tighten these nuts very tight (approx. 140 ft. lbs.). 3. Turn the 4 bolts on the ends of the hitch back in until they snug up against the bracket under the hitch head. Do not over tighten.
67
The gear adjustment bolt is preset at the factory and is not to be adjusted at the time of installation. It only needs to be adjusted if there is too much for and aft movement in the slide assembly when stopping and starting in the straight towing position. There may be some movement experienced when in a turn but there should be very little when the truck and trailer are in parallel alignment. To adjust bolt: 13. Make sure the hitch position is parallel with the truck box and not in a turned position. It should be forward towards the cab of the truck. 14. Using a 1 1/8 wrench, loosen the nut that is tight against the rear end plate. 15. Turn the bolt in clockwise until it stops against the gear. 16. Back the bolt off 1/8 of a turn and retighten the nut to lock into position.
NOTE TO DEALERS: When the hitch is in the straight towing position it is VERY HARD to turn by hand. There is a hard urethane dampener that helps to keep it from moving and turning when not coupled. If you wish to use hitch as a dealership floor display model please contact Victoria Industries for instructions to modify hitch for display purposes.
Coupling Procedure
Because the AutoSlide hitch uses capture plates to maintain the hitch head position in relation to the trailer king pin, the trailer can only be coupled and uncoupled when it is in straight or slightly angled alignment. The AutoSlide can couple and uncouple up to a 10-15 trailer angle quite easily. Anything over this degree of angle will not allow for proper coupling. See diagram below.

To remove bottom or both discs: 1. Remove the hitch head by unclipping and removing the large pivot pin located under the hitch head. 2. Using a 1 1/8 wrench, undo and remove the bolt and nut that hold the pivot assembly onto the gear shaft. This is located under the large pivot pin. Lift the pivot assembly straight up and off of the shaft. 3. Remove top disc and put aside for reassembly or replace with a new one. 4. Undo and remove the 4 nuts and bolts (2 per end) on the middle bottom of the end plates that fasten the lower guide tubes to the frame and remove the guide tubes. 5. The gear assembly, slide disc, and spacer tube will now remove from the frame assembly. Replace the slide disc with a new one. 6. Reassemble in the reverse order. Outrigger Adjustment
The AutoSlide hitch has an outrigger or bar that is designed to help carry and distribute the hitch and trailer weight when the hitch is near its full travel distance. This outrigger needs to be adjusted after the hitch has been installed at its correct height within the truck bed. The outrigger bar and bolts need to be loosely fitted to the end plate of the hitch that is closest to the tailgate of the truck before the installation procedure. If the hitch is to be mounted in the lowest setting with the UMS mounting base rail system, install the outrigger as shown in the very bottom drawing (2), using only 1 nut on the top of the bent flange to secure the outrigger. On all other height settings, install the outrigger as shown in the top drawing (1), using 2 nuts to adjust and lock the bar. Once the hitch is installed and locked into place in the truck bed, adjust the height of the outrigger bar so that it is snug up against the top of the truck bed and tighten both nuts to lock into place.

Bedliner Installations
88
NOTE: Always check your provincial laws and/or regulations regarding the installation of a fifth wheel hitch over top of a bed liner. Do not install above bed liner if in violation of law. If the customer prefers to have their fifth wheel hitch installed above the bed liner, below is the only procedure we recommend for this type of installation. The installer must accept responsibility that this procedure is followed and that the customer is aware that the bolts fastening the bed rail to the truck must be re-tightened after each of at least the first two towing trips. This will take up any slack that may take place due to some compression of the bed liner that may occur after trailer weight has been on it.

SL Installation
Note: Round bars and flat bars must run the full 33 length of the SL bed rail and 4 width of the UL bed rail
