LO2 Multiple graphs: Graphs with two or more linear functions and graphs with linear and non-linear functions.
1. Mrs Radebe decides that it is time for her teenage twins to have cellular telephones so that they will be able to contact her after their soccer practices and matches. She approaches two cellular telephone companies in order to determine the best deal that she can get. She is aware that the boys will not only use their telephone to telephone her, but that they would also use them to contact their friends, go on line and probably also use smss. She tabulates the information she has found as follows:

Cellphone provider

Contract Cost per Minute peak Cost per Minute - off peak

Pay-asyou-go

Basic Rate

Cost per Minute

Yellow Phone Company

R95 per month R2,65

Red Phone Company 1.1

R110 per month

R2,65

First 50 minutes free; R1,90 after 50 minutes R2,50 First 85 minutes free; R1,25 after 85 minutes R2,45

Take the above information into account to determine the cost of giving the twins each a cellphone by copying and completing the table below.

Represent the information in 2.1 above graphically on a set of axes. If Zanele travels 245 kms per day, which option would be the cheapest? If Zanele travels less than 50 kms per day, which option would be the cheapest? If Zanele travels between 50 and 200 kms per day, which option would cost the most?

3. Inflation has resulted in escalated costs for all aspects of the economy. Building costs have also escalated over the past few years. When you want to build a house the quote given to you by the builder will be given as a rate in rand per square metre (R/m). Refer to the table below and answer the questions that follow. Year 2004 Cost Per m R3 000 2005 R3 300 2006 R3 712,50 2007 R4 455

3.1 Determine the cost of building a 80m house in 3.1.1 2004 3.1.2 2005 3.1.3 2006 3.1.4 2007 3.2 Determine the cost of building a 190m house in 3.2.1 2004 3.2.2 2005 3.2.3 2006 3.2.4 2007 3.3 Use a set of axes with the m on the x-axis and the cost on the yaxis. Plot the amounts of 3.1.1 above and 3.2.1 above on the set of axes and join the points. Now repeat the process for each year. 3.4 Read off from your graph what the cost would be of a 120m house in 2007.

1.3 The cheapest option would be to use the Red Phone Companys offer of a contract with off-peak minutes. This is the cheapest option. However, she will not be able to dictate that the twins only use off peak minutes, so it may be more advisable for her to get use the Red Phone Companys pay as you go option. This way she can dictate the amount of money she gives the twins and it will be the cheapest option financially if they do not only stick to off peak times.
