LO3 Properties of shapes and objects: 2- and 3-D shapes and objects
1. Karen visited her grandmother during the June examinations. She decided to help her grandmother by cleaning out the attic. While she was cleaning she came across boxes of things her grandmother had kept and were now old. Amongst the wonderful things she found a patchwork blanket that her great-grandmother had made. Refer to the picture of one fifth of the blanket below and answer the questions that follow.

1.1

Karen measures the patches with an old tape measure that she found in a sewing box. The patches are 6 inches by 4 inches. Determine the size of the whole patchwork blanket in inches. Convert the measurements of the patchwork patches into centimetres and determine the measurements of the whole blanket in centimetres square. The tape measure measures up to a total of 5 foot 6 inches. In metric terms, how long is 5 foot 6 inches? On closer inspection, Karen finds that one of the patches is as shown below.

1.4.1 Write down the various shapes used in the patch. 1.4.2 What form of transformation was used for the corner triangles? 2. Design a pattern for a square patchwork transforming parallelograms. 3. Draw a net (a 2-D combination of shapes that can be folded up to form the object) of a triangular pyramid, a truncated triangular pyramid (the top has been cut off) and a trapezium in the shape of a lampshade.

4. Snowmans Castle Pre-school received a donation of various shaped pieces of foam rubber for the children to play on. Use the shapes below to make up the following shapes: 4.1 4.2 4.3 Truck Bridge House

5. Draw an isometric view (on isometric paper) of a cube, a triangular prism and a hexagonal prism.

6. Scoop spoons for ice cream come in different sizes. Study the drawing of the two round spoons below and calculate the volume of the ice cream ball that each scoop will make in cm and ml.

ANSWERS
1.1 (6 X 5) X (4 X 8) = 30 inches x 32 inches for one fifth. The whole blanket measures (30 x 5) x (32 x 5) = 150 x 160 = 24 000 inches
1.2

1 inch = 2,54 cm The whole blanket measure ((30 x 2,54) x 5) x ((32 x 2,54) x 5) = 381 cm x 406,4 cm = 154 838,4 cm

1.3

5 foot and 6 inches

= (5 x 12) + 6 = 66 inches = 66 x 2,54 = 167,64 cm

They are round spoons and will therefore make an ice cream sphere. The formula for determining the volume of a sphere is
V = 4 3 r 3

4 Volume for the d = 3 spoon = V = 33

= 113,1 cm or 113 ml Volume for the d = 4 spoon = V = 23 = 33,5 cm or 33,5 ml
