Sophie has designs on the Olympics

NESTON High School student Sophie Roscoe has won the top award in the North West Regional 2012 Olympic Games mascot design competition. The talented Year 10 art and design student received her award at the Northwest 2012 Conference. Sophies mascot design was shortlisted from over 2,500 entries. Her winning North West design was presented to a judging panel including Olympic gold medal Triple Jumper Jonathan Edwards, Paralympic basketball player Ade Adepitan and the London 2012 Head of Education Nick Fuller. The design theme depicts the place and community in which the designer lives and Sophie chose to represent the musical history in her area with Wenlock supporting a drum logo, holding drum sticks and decorated with musical notes. The Mascot will now become a familiar figure in the run up and during the Olympics and Paralympics in the North West featuring on flags, posters, and developed into an official 2012 pin badge. Councillor Stuart Parker congratulates Sophie Roscoe as her design wins the Regional 2012 North West mascot competition.

Slimmer Helens feeling on top of the world!

NESTON slimmer Helen Thomas is on top of the world after losing all her excess weight with Slimming World. Helen who felt unhappy about her size, joined her local Slimming World group in October 2009 after being told about it by a friend My weight had spiralled out of control and I knew I had to do something about it. remembered Helen, So after being recommended by a friend I went along to Jaynes Slimming World Group on Before Burton Road in Little Neston. I felt quite nervous about walking through the doors of the Dee Scout Centre on my first night, but the consultant Jayne immediately put me at ease. She then explained all about the Slimming World Food Optimising Plan, which was really generous and meant that I never had to go hungry, because of all the free food that I could eat as much as I wanted to. I love my food,and eat out regularly, so that was great for me. Helen then began going for short walks and going to the gym to help with the weight loss. By Christmas she had lost almost 1 1/2 stones and as time went on and she was losing more and more weight, she started to do longer walks and eventually she increased After - on top of her fitness level Snowdon so much that she was able to go with her husband on mountain walks. In June 2010 Helen reached her target weight after losing a fantastic 2 1/2 stones! Moving onwards and upwards, next Helen did the Race for Life with her daughter Mel who had lost a stone by also joining the group. The next goal Helen set herself was to walk up Mount Snowdon, followed by Scafell Pyke and then, Ben Nevis, achieving the National Three Peaks with her husband, something she would never had dreamed of doing before losing the weight. She did it on hot summers days and in record time too!

Pupils learn about the dangers of trucks.

Pupils from Acorn Nursery and Neston Primary School had the opportunity to learn first hand about the dangers of trucks. The Trucks and Child Safety (TACs) programme is organised by the DHL Foundation and its aim is to improve childrens road safety. Through practical demonstrations the pupils were shown how difficult it is for drivers to hear and see children who are close to the lorry and the dangers of cycling near trucks. Mini Hollywood film school for Neston

FILM-MAkING classes are to be held at the Neston Youth and Community Centre on Friday evenings starting on Friday 2nd September. As part of the five week course, students will have a go at making a short film as well as learning about the world of low budget film making. The tutor is James Chalmers who is looking forward to passing on his considerable knowledge of film making which will also include music videos, show reels, script writing, acting and directing. The course promises to be fun as well as instructive and the emphasis on particular topics will be tailored to the needs of those who attend. The course is open to people of all ages. So whether you want to act on camera, write. So whether you want to act on camera, write scripts, learn how to put a movie together or simply fancy trying something different, then contact James for further details. HAvE you just finished work? Are you looking forward to having time to do all the things which you enjoy? If you join Neston U3A you will have the company of likeminded people to enjoy it with you. Our members have wide-ranging interests. If you are looking for physical activities we have walking groups, table tennis, pilates and country dancing. If you prefer something more intellectual there are language courses, science and technology and literature. Maybe you are artistically inclined? We have groups for painting and for craft. These are just a few of our interest groups. The U3A is run by members for the members. This means that if you have a particular interest you can start a group and if there is enough support it will run. It also means that the costs to members is minimal. Regular coach outings are organised, to places of interest. There is a lecture on the last Thursday in the month. Why not come along and find out what it is all about. Video company pushes the boat out

THIS summer Neston-based Chat Noir Productions Ltd was commissioned to produce a video promoting the new Hoylake Lifeboat Museum. Based in the old victorian lifeboat station on Hoylake promenade, the museum celebrates the bravery of the men who crewed the boats from the station for over 100 years. Chat Noir had already filmed the return of the 110 year old Champman lifeboat to the museum back in May. The last surviving Liverpool class lifeboat of its type, the Chapman had been painstakingly restored by trainees at the Laird Foundation in Birkenhead. Filming took place not only at the Hoylake Lifeboat Museum, but also on Hilbre Island at the remains of the lifeboat station built there. Chat Noir used a mixture of video and archive photographs to tell the history of lifeboats in Hoylake bay and the museums aspirations for the future. The video has been played at the Lifeboat station during open days, as well at funding events. At the July meeting, we were entertained by a belly dancer called Fatima who demonstrated the craft and encouraged some audience participation which led to some hilarity. The group visited Calke Abbey and Woodend Cottage in July and Bluebell Nurseries in August. In September there is a visit to Hoghton Towers and Bygone Times. In November there is a visit planned to the Floral Pavilion for a viennese Strauss Christmas Gala. Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th September The 2011 Neston Music Festival takes place with concerts on both days. This annual festival started in 2000 with a small-scale concert and has become progressively more ambitious, raising almost 10,000 for Claire House Childrens Hospice and the Wirral Churches Ark Project. In a similar format to last year there will be an orchestral concert on the Saturday evening and a concert by the Pemberton Old Wigan Band on the Sunday. Proceeds will go to the charities mentioned above. This years orchestral programme will include Berlioz Overture Les Francs-Juges, Dvoraks Slavonic Dance No.6, Saint Saens First Cello Concerto and Brahms Second Symphony. The concert will be conducted by Eric Jennings; the cello soloist will be Frdric Steinbrchel. The concert by the Pemberton Old Wigan Band will include a variety of music from this Championship bands wide repertoire. Tickets for the orchestral and band concerts will cost 8.
