Title: To analyze and give a brief description of TPI (teaching perspective inventory) for educational purposes.

Date: San Salvador, September 2011

INTRODUCTION To define and analyse the use of a teaching perspective inventory (TPI) as a tool to improve teaching in every single field on education, as well as to appraise the importance of knowing my personal teaching styles and teaching ideologies to achieve curriculum, syllabi and content objectives based on learners quality performance addressed to their every day activities and societal needs. TPI main purpose is to measure 5 different perspectives. They are: TRANSMISSION, APPRENTICESHIP, DEVELOPMENTAL, NURTURING and SOCIAL REFORM. Those perspectives are based on teaching ideologies to give the user a general guideline to identify himself with his teaching perspective in order to apply the appropriate methods, techniques and resources in the teaching - learning process. TPI is shown as an online questionnaire which has 45 items related to different teaching scenarios where the users select the options that better match with their teaching ideologies; at the end of the task, a graph is represented automatically providing to the candidates the results of their recessive and dominant teaching perspectives. It is recommendable to answer the questions with honesty in order to get a more reliable and accurate result.

My dominant perspective is Apprenticeship Based on the results, I have an Apprenticeship teaching perspective which means the knowledge that students can have and the contents that are taught in class can be learned by practice rather than receiving theory, I am a person who believe that the best content that I can teach or the best knowledge that I can transmit, is the one that I have mastered and specialized by being a practitioner of the contents that I teach, assigning roles, tools and guidance to students to make them owners and independent of their own knowledge by applying it towards several tasks within their learning environment. Even though my dominant perspective is Apprenticeship, the scores reflect that I have a combination of recessive perspectives such as nurturing, transmission and developmental, which is a great advantage because those perspectives help me to combine different teaching ideologies to complement and perform my teaching skills in order to address learner needs more properly. In the meantime, I have big gaps and weaknesses with the social reform perspective since I am a person who prefer to keep conservative models that have had success in the teaching field, rather than to

be open to innovate or accept new ideas to adjust or change those teaching models that have been already established. Teaching perspective scores classified on a graph

Conclusion

A TPI questionnaire can be used to demonstrate and show the candidate a more general guidance of his teaching perspective and combine new teaching ideologies to improve education, however a TPI test result is never going to reflect accuracy or reliability since a questionnaire is limited to get information that is generalized to the closest perspective that best match with the answers provided by the user, but it will never measure a specific perspective due to everyone has combination of them; for example, my dominant perspective according to the result is apprenticeship, but I have three more recessive perspectives that I can combine to build my personalized teaching ideology. However the more times a TPI test is taken by the same user the more reliable the information could be. However I can apply my teaching perspective during my classes by assigning students several tasks focused on practice instead of taking notes and designing contents based on real scenarios where the teacher and students are involved to find solutions for environmental, societal and personal needs.
