SUPPORTING INDIVIDUALS WITH COMPLEX AND CHALLENGING BEHAVIOUR


Complex and challenging behaviours are often misunderstood and viewed as negative or disruptive behaviour. In this workshop participants will identify behaviour as a communication tool highlighting an unmet need, and examine behaviour as an interaction with others or an environment that may challenge staff and/or community understanding. Through reviewing past and present behaviour management techniques participants will understand the benefit of both proactive and reactive strategies, effective communication and managing their own behaviour in a crisis situation. Specific learning outcomes include:

John Fletcher has worked in the community services sector for almost 30 years working with individuals with cognitive impairment, intellectual impartment and mental health in the aged care, disability and welfare sectors. John has worked as a support worker, in coordination and management roles. John has been actively involved in lobbying government and key organisations. Johns knowledge of the community sector has allowed him to work in the Commonwealth Public Service, having worked for Centrelink as a Personal Adviser, assisting people to return to the workforce after being long term unemployed, CALD, prison release, refugees and mature aged. John has coordinated the training for House with No Steps in their program for disadvantage persons returning to the workforce and more recently John has joined Synapse to coordinate and deliver accredited and non-accredited training nationally.
