DLNA Introduction - Digital Living Network Alliance

DLNA is an acronym for Digital Living Network Alliance DLNA was introduced in June 2003 as the Digital Home Working Group (DHWG). It was renamed Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA) in June 2004. DLNA published its first set of Interoperability Guidelines in June 2004 and the first set of DLNA Certified products began appearing in market soon thereafter. The latest version of the DLNA Interoperability Guidelines, version 1.5, was published in March 2006, and then expanded in October 2006.

Digital Media Server (DMS)

These devices store content and make it available to networked digital media players (DMP) and digital media renderers (DMR). Some digital media servers can also help protect your content once stored. Examples: PCs and network attached storage (NAS) devices.

Digital Media Player (DMP)

These devices find content on digital media servers (DMS) and provide playback and rendering capabilities. Examples: TVs, stereos and home theaters, wireless monitors and game consoles.

Digital Media Renderer (DMR)

These devices play content received from a digital media controller (DMC), which will find content from a digital media server (DMS). Examples: TVs, audio/video receivers, video displays and remote speakers for music.

Digital Media Controller (DMC)

These devices find content on digital media servers (DMS) and play it on digital media renderers (DMR). Examples: Internet tablets, Wi-Fi enabled digital cameras and personal digital assistants (PDA).

Digital Media Printer (DMPr)

These devices provide printing services to the DLNA home network. Generally, digital media players (DMP) and digital media controllers (DMC) with print capability can print to DMPr. Examples: networked photo printers and networked all-in-one printers.

Mobile Digital Media Server (M-DMS)

These wireless devices store content and make it available to wired/wireless networked mobile digital media players (M-DMP), digital media renderers (DMR) and digital media printers (DMPr). Examples: mobile phones and portable music players.

Mobile Digital Media Player (M-DMP)

These wireless devices find and play content on a digital media server (DMS) or mobile digital media server (M-DMS). Examples: mobile phones and mobile media tablets designed for viewing multimedia content.

Mobile Digital Media Uploader (M-DMU)

These wireless devices send (upload) content to a digital media server (DMS) or mobile digital media server (M-DMS). Examples: digital cameras and mobile phones.

Mobile Digital Media Downloader

These wireless devices find and store (download) content from a digital media server (DMS) or mobile digital media server (M-DMS). Examples: portable music players and mobile phones.

Mobile Digital Media Controller

These wireless devices find content on a digital media server (DMS) or mobile digital media server (MDMS) and send it to digital media renderers (DMR). Examples: personal digital assistants (PDAs) and mobile phones.

How it works - Find and play movies

Your movie collection is stored on your network attached storage (NAS), a certified digital media server (DMS). Instead of watching the movie on the little PC monitor in your office, you want to enjoy it on the large flat-panel TV in your living room. Because your DLNA Certified TV is certified as a digital media player (DMP), you can use the DMP capabilities of your TV to find the movies on your NAS, and then play them on the TV.

How it works - Find, send and play music

Youve loaded all your favorite music onto your PC, a certified digital media server (DMS). Using your DLNA Certified personal digital assistant (PDA), which may be certified as a mobile digital media controller (MDMC), you can find songs you want on your PC and send them to play on your DLNA Certified wireless speakers. In this case, the speakers deliver the capabilities of a certified Digital Media Renderer (DMR).

How it works - Upload photos

There are photos on your personal digital assistant (PDA), a certified mobile digital media uploader (MDMU), you want to send and save to your newtork attached storage (NAS). Using a DLNA Certified PDA, you upload the photos to your DLNA Certified network attached storage (NAS), which operates as a certified Digital Media Server (DMS).

How it works Download Music

You want to transfer music from your PC, a certified Digital Media Server (DMS) in this scenario, to your MP3 player, a certified mobile digital media downloader (M-DMD). With DLNA Certified devices, you download the music from your PC using the MP3 player.

How it works - Send and print photos

You have a photo on your WiFi enabled camera phone you want to print. Assuming the phone is a certified mobile digital media controller (M-DMC), you can send the photo to your DLNA Certified printer, a certified digital media printer (DMPr), to print.

Coming Event and Update

DMC, DMR, and +PR2+ certification will be launched soon. (In March 2009) Plugfest #21 & RDQE#7 will host in Seattle, US during March 9 13, 2009 RDQE#7 focuses on DTCP-IP and WMDRM

Windows 7 Logo Requirement

Microsoft requires vendors who want their devices to be certified as Windows 7 compatible, they must pass DLNA certification Windows 7 devices can be used as digital media players, servers, renderers, or controllers. Not only will Windows 7 support DLNA, but in order for a PC, HDTV, or other peripheral to be listed as Windows 7 compatible, it also must be DLNA-certified. DMR, DMS, and DMC on Windows 7 must certify by DLNA.

DLNA Certification Testing

By DLNA certification testing, it can verify the implementation of the device. Ensure the best compatibility with other DLNA certified products Benefit when carrying the DLNA logo on your device

External Certification Information (1)

DLNA certification works in conjunction with the certification work done by other industry organizations. Before any product can be granted DLNA CERTIFIED status, proof of certification from associated organizations must be verified. Wi-Fi Certification ID (For device with wireless function) (WPA2) Wi-Fi certification testing must be performed according to the latest Wi-Fi test plan. http://www.wi-fi.org/OpenSection/certification_programs.asp?TID=2 UPnP Certification ID (DMS, DMR, DMPr) The UPnP Implementers Corporation (UIC) administers the UPnP device certification process and the UPnP logo licensing. http://www.upnp-ic.org/

External Certification Information (2)

UPnP Certification Process (DMS, M-DMS, DMPr) Become a UIC (UPnP Implementers Corporation) member Perform self test of UPnP CTT (Certification Test Tool) Submit the test logs, along with Web-based device registration form Review the test logs by UIC (up to 5 days)

Retest Opportunity: Retest one time. If the DUT fails during the conformance testing, retest shall be started from the beginning of the conformance testing. If the DUT fails during the interoperability testing, retest shall be started from the beginning of the Auto-IP Testing and follow with interoperability tests for that system usage.
