The Crucible is Millers most regularly performed play, dramatising the events surrounding the Salem witch trials in Massachusetts in 1692. The themes of mass hysteria, the confines and consequences of conformity and authority, and paranoid fear of the symbolic enemy within run through the play and are generally regarded as an allegory of McCarthyism in 1950s America, although these themes also resonate strongly in the contemporary period. At its heart is one mans struggle to come to terms with his own conscience as a community built on strict theocratic authority begins to turn in on itself and rapidly unravel. It has been almost 10 years since STG last performed this play and this will be our first major production as an independent touring company.
