I ended up using a short 9-pin computer type cable, but I realize this was not ideal. So I have all kinds of raw cable kicking around, including 75 Ohm digital-audio coax and some stranded multipair stuff. I found the pinout for the ADAT sync online. Sync Out: pin 1, 6 = MIDI out pin 2, 7 = Time code out pin 3, 8 = 48 kHz out pin 4, 9 = MIDI in pin 5 = Ground

So I don't quite see how I can wire one up myself if I want to keep the clock signal running within 75Ohm coax, and run the MIDI stuff through whatever multipair line I end up picking. How is ground linked between 2 synced devices using this format? Can I link the shells? The shell of one of the ADAT Sync (I forget in or out) is plastic, so it seems they intend to break the shield ground. Are the pairs of pins noted intended to be run through twisted pairs? If so, is using coax instead actually better or worse? If anyone has any tips on how this would be accomplished, your advice would be appreciated. It isn't that expensive to just buy a

Probably open-collector outputs (like classic midi) Most of the signals - excluding the 48KHz - are differential, and dosen't need ground. The 48KHz is referenced to +Vs, not ground. My guess is that standard Cat5 networking cable would do fine for carrying these signals, I don't see the need for coax.. Jakob E. ..note to self: don't let harman run your company.. The Gepco audio cable suggested in Ian's document is surely a twisted pair of sorts. Wouldn't shielded CAT5 or CAT6 be tighter twists? Is this necessary or helpful? I assume that the side with the metal 9-pin Dsub is the drain side for the shields. I only need like 4.5 feet, I should just buy the Alesis cable or whatever, but even tying off a few feet of extra length seems like a negative for clock cables. Plus, I'd like to think I can make any cable I need for the studio, including proprietary stuff like the adat sync line.
