ow time flies! The first half of the year has come and gone but certainly not without countless blessings from the Lord.

In this issue of Impacting Generations, we invite you to join us in thanking our Lord God for the launch of our TEACH Fresh Training Initiative (Feb), our I CAN motivational socio-emotional learning programme for primary school students (Feb), our Thanksgiving Dinner (Mar), our SU East & West Asia Regional Council meeting (Apr), SU Singapore & SU Myanmar and SU Thailand Companionship of Ministry updates, our partnership and involvement with Children in Prayer (CIP) Conference (April), Go4th National Missions Conference (May), Global Day of Prayer (GDOP) Childrens Track (June), our first hosting of the regional orientation training programme for newly-appointed staff (May) and the Holiday Trek Programme for children at church camps (June), and many more. We are indeed thankful for the support of many pastors, church leaders, parents, teachers, donors and volunteer camp leaders as we move ahead with the Lords affirming words, Arise, shine for your light has come, in Isaiah 60:1-3, given through Reverend Henry Hong, senior pastor of All Saints Presbyterian Church, during our Thanksgiving Dinner on 28 March. Will you join us to let our little light shine brighter in every corner of our circles of influence so that the light of the glorious gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ will penetrate into the darkest places and transform many more lives for His glory? All glory to our great and awesome God! David Leong Executive Director Scripture Union Singapore

No, for us in SU Singapore, its Today God is FIRST!

s Rev Yeo recalled his first encounter with the organisation in the 1950s through the proverbial Daily Notes from England, he called on the senior pastors, church leaders, mission organisational leaders, school principals, ministry partners and donors in attendance to pass the good news on. We were honoured to have many pastors and ministry partners celebrate Gods goodness with us, including representatives from St Andrews Cathedral, All Saints Presbyterian Church, Grace Methodist Church, Boscombe Life Church, Mount Hermon Bible-Presbyterian Church, Eternal Life Assembly, Sembawang Assembly of God, Hakka Methodist Church, Zion Full Gospel Church, Sion Christian Church, Yio Chu Kang Chapel, Singapore Global Centre for Missions, Bible Society of Singapore, St Andrews Junior School, St Hildas Primary School, SKS Books, among others. Rosalind Tan of Prinsep Street Presbyterian Church testified of the great impact of SUs childrens ministry on their young through childrens camps and church camps. And even though Rev Andrew Raman, Vicar of Chapel of Christ the Redeemer, could not make it to the event, he blessed us with words of encouragement through his email.

Before the closing prayer and benediction, Rev Henry Hong, senior pastor of All Saints Presbyterian C h u r c h , presented David with a lamp as a symbolic reminder of Isaiah 60:1-3 for SU Singapore. He also assured David that he and all those present will always be supportive of SUs ministry.

hes all but 21 years old yet Ong Xuan is already into her seventh year of involvement in the Living Spring Fellowships childrens ministry. In January 2010, she attended Scripture Unions TEACH Fresh Masters Workshop before signing up for all five modules of the Certificate in Practical Childrens Ministry. The modules are very comprehensive and cover topics ranging from biblical basis of childrens ministry to lesson planning, from creative worship to classroom management - almost everything you need to know for the ministry (theory wise); much like a survival guide for an effective children ministry, said Ong Xuan. Besides, what I like about the course is that it requires participants to fulfill practical requirements such as helping out at a Christian schools chapel service, Sunday School, childrens camp and a holiday trek programme. The valuable feedback we get helps us to improve ourselves.

Im so happy I signed up for the entire course! It is: Comprehensive almost everything a teacher needs to know for childrens ministry! Creative gives a whole new perspective Contextualised hands-on practicum in mission schools, churches and holiday trek programme and camps. Ong Xuan

The Certificate in Practical Childrens Ministry is a TEACH Fresh Training Initiative of Scripture Union Singapore. It provides ministry leaders who want to grow in their love of God and for children the following: Systematic learning of basic but creative, cutting-edge knowledge in childrens ministry. Service opportunities through compulsory hands-on practicum arrangements in mission schools, churches and camps. Skills to reach and raise the next generation of 4-to14year-olds to become agents of Gods transformation in the world. Council Member for Training Geneieve Tang Speaks:
We believe that training is an on-going and life-long process, and that those ministering to children, young people and families should be equipped with effective, cutting-edge training that provides such compulsory hands-on practicum and tools which we offer in our Certificate programme.

Thank God for the Overwhelming Response!

I was not able to do well in my studies and I failed all my subjects, Matthew* disclosed. The I CAN programme has since bolstered his sense of worth. These days, Matthew feels good about himself, and is motivated to do his best. I started to believe in myself and gradually my confidence grew. I was able to pass and do well in my studies, he enthused. He knows he is cherished and valued. Just like the twodollar note. The I CAN programme launched this year at Kuo Chuan Presbyterian Primary School has made a positive impact on the primary school children who have not only learned to respect their teachers and parents but also to believe they can change. Raymond* who participated in the programme held in his school found the lessons fun and helpful. Everyone is special in different ways but we all can make a difference, he said, adding proudly that his teachers have noticed improvements in his work and behaviour since he attended the programme.

A participant in the I CAN motivational programme, Kai was all ears when instructor Barnabas Loh, SU Ministry Executive, took out the purple note, crushed it, stomped on it, and asked if anyone would still want it. I recognised then that we may fail our exams, disappoint our parents, but we are still valuable, Kai said, with a spark in his eyes. During the 14-week motivational programme, Kai and his schoolmates picked up many how tos to equip them to handle anger, make and treat friends and deal with hurts and pain. They were also taught how to make right choices, set goals and achievements and show appreciation - in short, Emotional Intelligence. Outdoor activities such as nature hikes, campfires, barbeques and fishing trips made the learning all the more interesting and refreshing. Furthermore, the hands-on practical sessions simulating true-life situations opened Alvins* eyes to his own unruly behaviour. Frequently up to mischief in school, he would walk around in class and shout vulgarities, showing little respect towards his teachers. Through the I CAN

The camp theme was SOLID ROCK, with Psalm 62:2 (ESV) as the theme verse: He only is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be greatly shaken. Children discovered the Bible truth that Jesus Christ is the Solid Rock in whom they can put their trust because he is fully dependable and trustworthy - for our salvation, protection, and provision of help in times of trouble. SU Trek Leaders, consisting of several veterans and current students of SUs Certificate in Practical Childrens Ministry, taught the Bible lessons creatively with exuberant praise & worship, games that paved the way for the lessons and reinforced the Bible truths, puppet shows, drama, role-play and group discussions.

n the month of June, SU Ministry Executive Barnabas Loh was invited for the first time by the following churches to speak to their youths at their camps. It was an awesome and wonderful experience to be able to minister to the group of 14- to 16-year-olds about being Gods Masterpiece. Many youths and adult leaders were blessed by the sermons, life stories, fun activities as well as the song, There Is Love For You, composed by Barnabas, and the Lord used it to touch their lives.

In the books foreword, Pam Rhodes, Presenter of BBCs Songs of Praise, Patron of MHA, calls dementia a robber that robs people of their memory, their personality and ability to recognise and react normally even with partners and family they have loved for years. She lauds these imaginative and practical 48-page Bible and prayer guides for people with dementia and those struggling with memory loss as a nudge to the memory. Each title consists of 31 daily devotionals with a different Bible theme every day and a cues and clues box to aid conversation and recall, and open for the person with dementia a close connection to faith and the God who has never stopped loving them. Included in each title is a CD with an evocative and inspirational hymn or song for each day. Words of Peace features Bible readings about the beginning and God, words of blessings and peace from the Old Testament and Jesus words of peace and joy from the New Testament. Songs in the accompanying CD include What a friend we have in Jesus, Sweet is the work, my God, my King, Be still my soul and How great thou art. Words of Hope contains well-loved words from the Bible tell the story of Jesus life and readings about the Light and life from Christmas to Easter. rom 5 to 8 April at the Crystal Crown Hotel in Petaling Jaya , the Scripture Union East & West Asia (SUEWA) Regional Council Meeting (RCM) 2011 was hosted by SU Peninsular Malaysia who was also celebrating her 40th anniversary. SU Singapore was represented by our Council Chairman, Rev Dr Alfred Yeo and Council Treasurer Valerie Ong. Our Executive Director, David Leong, attended as a member of the Regional Ministry Team (RMT). SU Singapore took the opportunity to present to the SU Japan Council Chairman Dr Kano a white cloth with little red hearts that formed a circle representing the Japanese flag. These little red hearts contained special prayers for those who have been affected by the recent earthquake and tsunami in Japan. They were written by the Singapore children who had attended the Children in Prayer (CIP) Conference on 1 April, which was co-organised by SU Singapore. The SUEWA Regional Council elected its first ever female chairperson in the person of Mrs Vivi Handoyo (below). It also recorded a note of thanks and appreciation to Dr Jerip Susil from SU Sarawak who has stepped down. The members of the new SUEWA Executive Committee for 2011-2012 were warmly welcomed. Chairperson: Mrs Vivi Handoyo (Indonesia) Vice-Chairman: Mr Jon Ong (Singapore) Secretary: Rev Tadashi Oyamada (Japan) Treasurer: Mr Joseph Chan (Hong Hong) Members: Mr Kyong-dong Min (Korea) Mrs Lucia Cheung (Hong Kong) Mr Jim Neging (Sarawak) Rev Dr Koh Gim Lam (Peninsular Malaysia) Congratulations to SU Singapore Council Member Mr Jon Ong who was elected the new SU East & West Asia Regional Council ViceChairman and Representative to SU International Council.

he Regional Ministry Team (RMT) consisting of Regional CEO Rev Tadashi Oyamada, Rev Dr Tony Oh, David Leong, Hans Wuysang and Jason Fong dropped in on SU Cambodia from 18 - 21 March 2011, the second leg of its visit to Indo-China. A one-day National Conference with the theme To be a Good Worker for the Lord was organised on 19 March by Long Sitha (Team Leader) and his staff with 120 participants representing 30 different churches 15 within Phnom Penh and 15 outside of it. At the conference, Rev Tadashi shared the morning devotion based on Lamentations 3:1922 and thanked God for sparing Tokyo of greater destruction. The RMT conducted workshops on How To Do Personal Quiet Time, Tools for Preaching

the Word of God, Principles of Effective Youth Ministry, Creative Childrens Worship. RMT members also preached at various churches on 20 March, Sunday morning. This trip has allowed them to understand the Cambodian culture better and enable them to help the SU Cambodia Committee and staff further develop its infrastructure and strategies.

SU E & WA Regional ON Institute 13 cum Childrens Ministry Institute 2011

wenty-four delegates from eight national movements - Korea, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Cambodia, Myanmar, Malaysia, Brunei and Singapore - underwent 13 gruelling days of training on 20 subjects by these 11 faculty members from 13 to 24 May 2011: Jon Ong, Rev Dr Alfred Yeo, Terry Williams, Jason Fong, David Leong, Hans Wuysang, Rev Tadashi Oyamada, Dr Andrew Goh, Yoong Fook Loy, Dr Cheah Fung Fong and Valerie Ong. It was the first time SU Singapore had hosted the ON Institute cum Childrens Ministry Institute since their establishment in 1994. The ON Institute (ONI) was conceived by Rev Koh Gim Lam after his appointment as Regional Secretary of SU East Asia in 1993. He saw the need to provide a more comprehensive orientation training programme, one that encompassed SU history, aims, mission, ethos, working principles and core ministry knowledge and skills in the programme, and which would be especially crucial to SU movements that lack the expertise and resources to train their new staff. Held once in two years, the programme includes two weeks of intensive residential orientation training programme and a week of hands-on ministry exposure. This year, the latter was made non-mandatory for all participants. Instead, the Childrens Ministry Institute was mandatory. This was because of the worldwide renewed emphasis on the 4-14 window/ generation. Rev Tadashi Oyamada, SU E & WA Regional CEO, was very pleased with the success of ONI and attributed this to ONIs rich history and solid content. It is a good thing to be able to learn so much. Jesus emphasised training. He trained his 12 disciples. And it is important to be trained to be a good servant of the Lord.

The following is an excerpt of interviews with three faculty members: Terry Williams, SU International Childrens Ministry Consultant; Jason Fong, SUEWA Youth Ministry Co-ordinator and Hans Wuysang, SUEWA Bible Ministry Co-ordinator: What was the most significant aspect of ON Institute 13 cum CMI 2011 to you?
Terry: The commitment of the Region to invest in the lives and ministry of SU staff from a wide range of movements. To live in community, as you did, and with the intensive program of specialised inputs, makes this a strategic investment in the work of SU and the Kingdom. This is a great model for downloading the values and working principles of the movement to the next generation of SU workers. Jason: Training! Human resource development is a key factor in the equation of growth and sustainability. If SU E& WA is to continue to grow, we must continue to train and develop our leaders, staff and volunteers. Hans: ON Institute gives the new staff a clear understanding of the vision and mission and philosophy of SU and how to put it into practice.

What would say were the special Ah-ha! or Wow! moments during your stay at ON Institute?
Terry: Interactive learning always creates some special Ah-ha! moments as delegates engage with the learning in a fun and creative way thst will stay with them. Walking the streets of Singapore with a small group of delegates created the space and the time to get to know some of them more personally. Meal times provided the same opportunities - for cross cultural interchanges and fun. Jason: I am an SU veteran, yet I continue to learn from others around me. I think my Wow! moment was seeing how the Koreans had made so much effort to interact with others. Hans: The angel of mine continued to surprise me with pleasant things.

In terms of the group dynamics which you experienced and saw among the participants, what captivated you?
Terry: I was encouraged to see delegates from the larger movements separated and mixing and not remaining in their safe country groups. Jason: The bonding and friendship forged among most of the participants is great. I see some of these relationships have continued post-ON Institute via Facebook. How did this happen? I think this is the result of Christian camping. When people stay together in a temporary community for almost two weeks, such dynamics will sure to be catalysed. Hans: I saw that all participants got involved in every programme and interacted and strengthened their relationship with one another. I think it is because the environment in this camp or training is built with good fellowship and good leadership.

What is your prayer/wish for the ON Institute 13 cum CMI participants?

Terry: My prayer is that the enthusiasm, experiences, and knowledge that were so much a part of the ON Institute 2011 will live long in the memories of each delegate and be constantly outworked, under the direction of the Holy Spirit, as each person serves God in his or her corner of His vineyard. Jason: My prayers: that the seeds sown at ONI will germinate, take root, grow and bear fruit. Hans: May all the participants be able put into practice what they have received and experienced, and their work/ministry will have more of the SU character and ethos.
