The Recolonization Process for Our Undergraduate Chapter Begins!

On Saturday, we had our first reorganization meeting to begin the process of re-establishing the Beta Delta chapter of Theta Chi at Rutgers. Dave Westol, our organizations chief executive officer, and Alex Ruiz, one of Theta Chis regional counselors, were in attendance. JoAnn Arnholt, the Dean of the Office of Fraternity Affairs of Rutgers University, represented the Rutgers Greek community. I would like to thank Dave,Alex and JoAnn for taking time out or their weekend to be with us for this important endeavor. In addition to members of our executive board, I would like to thank Andy Babij 79, Greg Francfort 79, Rick Geiger 98 and Steve Leyden 98 for volunteering their time to not only attend this meeting but to act as advisors for our new undergraduates when we begin the recruitment process in January. (The complete minutes of this meeting, including a list of attendees, is available on our website.) We will be having three representatives from our national headquarters who will be on campus at Rutgers to initiate the recruiting process. They will focus their efforts on undergraduate campus leaders who would be active in ensuring that our Beta Delta chapter is once again a chapter that we can be proud of. A number of other alumni have volunteered their time even though they were unable to make this initial meeting. I would like to thank all of you for volunteering your time as well, given the importance of this endeavor. On another note, we have had several successful tailgates this fall, helped in part by the success that the Rutgers football team has enjoyed. It was great to see so many of you at these tailgates, as we enjoyed our Scarlet Knights achieve a ranking as high as No. 7 in the country after the exciting win over Louisville on Thursday, November 9th, which also featured one of our Theta Chi tailgates. I would like to thank all of you who gave so generously to our brick campaign. I hope that many of you had a chance to see our brick, which has one of the most visible spots on the Scarlet Walk of Fame where the football team enters before every home game.We expect that this will also provide positive publicity and visibility for our chapter as we return to The Banks. We will have another fundraising campaign in 2007 specifically related to the expenses associated with the renewal of our chapter. Our vice-president, Steve Tracey 78, will be sending a letter with details regarding this effort in the near future. In our next edition of the Bugle, I will provide all of you with an update on the reinstatement of our chapter, as the process will be well on its way at that point. I know that all of you share in my excitement at re-establishing our chapter, and thanks again to all of you who have volunteered your time to ensure that our reinstatement is a successful one. Have a happy and safe holiday season. Fraternally Yours, Glenn L. Long 72 President Beta Delta/Theta Chi Alumni Association

Dear Beta Delta Alumnus Brothers:

I am very pleased to have this opportunity to share a few thoughts about our recolonization of Beta Delta Chapter at Rutgers University. During the past five years your Headquarters staff has made the recolonization of inactive chapters a priority. Inactive chapters that have been successfully reinstalled during that time include Theta/Massachusetts,Alpha Iota/Indiana, Beta Tau/University of Southern California, Gamma Rho/Florida State, and Epsilon Zeta/Tampa. In each recolonization effort, the involvement of alumnus members has been a critically important factor. We will begin by recruiting a number of undergraduates who will form an Interest Group. The recruitment will be done by Leadership and Education Consultants from the Headquarters. If you know of a young man at Rutgers who might be interested in becoming a Theta Chi, please send his contact information to Joe Wachs, our Director of Chapter Services and Expansion, at joe@thetachi.org Once the Interest Group reaches a membership of 25, the members will petition to become a colony. That process also starts a timeline towards the reinstallation of the chapter. We expect that from the first recruitment effort to the Reinstallation Banquet the process will take about eighteen months. There are a number of ways that you can help us recolonize and ultimately reinstall Beta Delta. Colony Advisory Board (CAB): This group serves as a board of directors, so to speak, for the operations of the colony. Recruitment, New Member education, academics, community service--these are examples of areas of colony operation that the CAB members oversee. The CAB will ultimately become a Chapter Advisory Board. Alumni Corporation: Glenn Long and other very dedicated alumnus members are involved with the alumni corporation. In a classic model, the corporation focuses its attention upon the chapter house and financial matters. If you are interested in helping with the corporation, I suggest that you contact Glenn. Advisors: It has been said thousands upon thousands of times Show us a good chapter and we will show you a chapter with good alumnus advisors. In the Theta Chi of today, we have very few advisors of the Goodbye, Mr. Chips model who serve as the single chapter advisor for a number of years. Instead, we have small groups of advisors, ranging in size from three to six or seven, who share the responsibilities of attending meetings and helping chapter or colony leaders and members. I had the pleasure of conducting a preliminary educational/training session with eight Beta Delta alumnus members during the weekend of November 10th and 11th in Somerset, New Jersey. I am impressed with their commitment, energy and enthusiasm. I also hope that the session demonstrates our commitment as a staff to bringing Beta Delta Chapter back to life. My thanks to Glenn Long, Steve Tracey and others for their loyalty and patience as we begin the process, and my thanks to each of you for contributing what you can in terms of time or assistance. Fraternally, Dave Westol Chief Executive Officer Theta Chi Fraternity

Recolonization Update
Things are progressing rapidly with Beta Deltas recolonization efforts. We expect to begin recruiting new members when the spring semester begins on January 17th, 2007. As I have mentioned before, it will require significant time, effort, commitment, and financial support to bring Beta Delta back.Weve been blessed with an incredible outpouring of support so far.Thank you to all who have reached out to us. We recently hosted Dave Westol, Executive Director of Theta Chi, who led a group of us through a briefing on the mechanics of the recolonization effort. National Headquarters will assign two part-time men to begin recruitment. They will live close to the Rutgers campus and will coordinate with the university in their efforts to target young men who would be candidates for rushing to our renewed chapter. In addition, the Beta Delta Alumni Board has agreed to partially underwrite a third person who

would be dedicated more exclusively to Rutgers, assuming that a person is hired in time to meet our January target. This expenditure will be approximately $5,000 and we will be soliciting financial support in a separate mailing once we have definite plans to move forward. Perhaps the most important part of our success will be the support and time provided by alumni in mentoring and guiding the new colony in its nascent stage. If anyone has some time to offer, please email me at stevetracey@optonline.net.We have a good group of alumni already formed but we need more help. If you could possibly spare a few hours over the coming year it would mean a great deal to the chapter. Please feel free to email me or call me at (908) 962-8301 with any questions, ideas, or concerns. Theta Ch for life!
