Let Not Your Heart Be Troubled

And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also. John 14:3

Some nights are long. Those nights may be spent in your own bed, but awake and staring into the darkness, trying to make sense of the struggles around you. There may be nights in the hospital waiting for words of encouragement from the doctor. There could be nights sitting in a silent house hoping to hear the sound of a child or spouse who is long overdue to be home. Some nights really are long. None of us seem to be fully adept at removing stress and worry from our lives. Even when we know that our worries accomplish nothing, we still stress. Even if we convince ourselves that our worrying does nothing, we tend to worry about worrying. As Jesus prepared his closest disciples for his departure, they had worries. Why could they not go where he was going? Where was he going? What were they supposed to do? Why would he tell them (Peter in particular) that they would not die for Him? What did He mean that He would be denied and forsaken? There were worries in their minds. To calm their stress and help their worries to subside, Jesus offered a simple remedy. Believe in me. He knew they believed in God. He knew they needed to believe in Him. If they would trust Him, their worries would diminish. It wasnt that their lives would be some sort of tip-toe through the tulips where no troubles would ever invade. Trust just does not remove troubles. What it does do is give us the tools of courage to handle those troubles. Jesus knew what they would face in His physical absence and wanted them to know they could still be assured of His providence toward them. It is a fact that we do not like to face troubles. During those long nights, when worries invade, we would rather that our troubles were gone. There would be something wrong with us if we didnt. At the same time, we know that there is no magic formula to make our worries disappear. What Jesus offers is trust in the like of the song: Like a bridge over troubled waters, I will ease your mind. Trust him! He will be there for us. Russ
