GODHEAD - WHO GOD IS .

Part 3 - The Value of a Name To this point, God has been identified by his singularity or individuality and image. Our third identifier will be by title and the fourth will be by name. The very last identifiers involve an examination of his works. A title is defined as a word or phrase attached, usually as a prefix , to the name of a person in order to denote his: office social dignity or status A name is defined as being a word or words by which a person, place or thing is known. In summation, a title denotes one's role, what one does and/or their position in society, whereas a name declares who that person is regardless of the role he plays, what he does or the position in society he holds. Further information: Names of God In the ancient world, particularly in the ancient near-east (Israel, Mesopotamia, Egypt, Persia) names were thought to be extremely powerful and to act, in some ways, as a separate manifestation of a person or deity.[3] This viewpoint is responsible both for the reluctance to use the proper name of God in Hebrew writing or speech, as well as the common understanding in ancient magic that magical rituals had to be carried out "in [someone's] name". By invoking a god or spirit by name, one was thought to be able to summon that spirit's power for some kind of miracle or magic (see Luke 9:49, in which the disciples claim to have seen a man driving out demons using the name of Jesus.) This understanding passed into later religious tradition, for example the stipulation in Catholic exorcism that the demon cannot be expelled until the exorcist has forced it to give up its name, at which point the name may be used in a stern command which will drive the demon away. Biblical Names: In the Old Testament, the names of individuals are meaningful; for example, Adam is named after the "earth" (Adam) from which he was created. (Genesis 2) A change of name indicates a change of status. For example, the patriarch Abram and his wife Sarai are renamed "Abraham" and "Sarah" when they are told they will be the father and mother of many nations (Genesis 17:4, 17:15). Simon was renamed Peter when he was given the Keys of the Kingdom of Heaven. (Matthew 16). Throughout the Bible, characters are given names at birth that reflect something of significance or describe the course of their lives. For example: Solomon meant peace, and the king with that name was the first whose reign was without warfare. Likewise,

Joseph named his firstborn son Manasseh (Hebrew: "causing to forget") as a gesture of forgiveness to his brothers for selling him into slavery. Biblical Jewish people did not have surnames which were passed from generation to generation. However, they were typically known as the child of their father. For example: $?&?$? "?0? *?:?*? (David ben Yishay) meaning, David, son of Jesse. In a sense, they used their fathers' first names as their own last names, a practice done by most Muslims today. Similar to Jewish names, the "ben" is replaced by "bin" for males, "binte", "binti" or "ibnu" for females to Muslims. Sometimes, names include "Al-", "Ali-", "-allah", "-lah/-llah" or "-ullah" as it means "a servant to god" or "god's servant". They would sometimes indicate the place they or their child live in. Titles for God in the Old Testament Christian apologists claim that the strongest argument for the deity of Christ is the one that most incensed Jesus' contemporaries: He personally referred to himself using the Old Testament names and titles for God, and also allowed others to call him by those appellations of deity. This practice so tremendously angered the rulers of the Jews that they tried to kill him for blasphemy.[1] The Jewish authorities had no doubt that this Galilean teacher was claiming to be Almighty God, and also allowing others to do so unchallenged)-something those religious authorities considered to be flagrant blasphemy.[1] What then are God's titles and what is his personal name? The Old Testament contains names and titles of Jesus in more indirect ways, primarily in prophecy. The study of these names is called christology. Because of the sheer magnitude of the list I could produce from the Old Testament, this list will be confined to Christ's titles based on his chief role in each book of the Old Testament. Names can identify a class or category of things, or a single thing, either uniquely, or within a given context. A personal name identifies a specific unique and identifiable individual person, and may or may not include a middle name. The name of a specific entity is sometimes called a proper name (although that term has a philosophical meaning also) and is a proper noun. Other nouns are sometimes, more loosely, called names; an older term for them, now obsolete, is "general names". Jesus Christ Jesus of Nazareth Jesus the Christ Jesus the Nazarene Authors have put forward numerous explanations to explain the origin of the name Jesus,[cf. Matt. 1:21] and have offered a still larger number of explanations for the meaning of the name. The name is related to the Hebrew *?A?%?&?J?:?L??3?H? Joshua, which is a theophoric name first mentioned within the Biblical tradition[Ex. 17:9] as one of Moses' companions (and, according to tradition, later successor). Breaking the name down, there are two parts: *?%?&? Yeho, a theophoric reference to YHWH, the distinctive personal name of the God of Israel, plus the three letter root :?&?3?, relating to the noun shua. Due to disputes over how to render :?&?3? lexically,[2][3][4][5][6] there are a number of generally accepted phrases this combination can translate to: Yeho-shua "Yhwh" saves 'Yhwh" (is) salvation "Yhwh" (is) a saving-cry "Yhwh" (is) a cry-for-saving "Yhwh" (is) a cry-for-help "Yhwh" (is) my help Noun 1. a word or a combination of words by which a person, place, or thing, a body or class, or any object of thought is designated, called, or known. 5. a distinguished, famous, or great reputation; fame: to make a name for oneself. 8. a personal or family name as exercising influence or bringing distinction: With that name they can get a loan at any bank in town. 9. a body of persons grouped under one name, as a family or clan. 10. the verbal or other symbolic representation of a thing, event, property, relation, or concept. 12. to give a name to: to name a baby. 15. to identify, specify, or mention by name: Three persons were named in the report. to give the name of: Can you name the capital of Ohio?
