Chapter I Introduction

A. Background of the Study College life is charged with a variety of events and activities the product of multifaceted interests of different student organizations. Active participation of students in different organizations enables them to develop leadership skills, explore new interests, and meet new people. Student organizations are made by interest to the diverse and growing population of students in colleges and universities. These organizations are encouraged to contribute to the campus by developing events and activities. College student organizations appear o provide students a variety of opportunities to become acquainted with the campus life within an institution. College student organization participation cultivates satisfaction with the college experience, increases campus and community involvement, and enhances intellectual development. In a study conducted by Ricardo Montelongo, he includes the work of Astin (1993) that College student organization participation can be a significant factor in a students college experience. On most colleges and universities, student organizations tend to fall in the following categories: student government groups, academic clubs, service groups, intramural sports club and religious groups. College not only provides students with a chance to learn, but it is also a place to get involved. These organizations conduct numerous activities such as tutorials, seminars, intramurals, outreach/service related programs, etc. The Ohio State Universitys web page concerning student organizations indicates that research on the benefits of student

organization membership suggests that involved students tend to perform better academically and are more likely to graduate than their non-involved peers. Being active in a particular organization give you chance to be around others who share your same interests and also gives you the opportunity to establish new friendship. Another benefit of joining organization is the chance to participate in campus production. Becoming part of an organization will allow you to take leadership roles. All organization is run by officers like president, secretary, treasurer, etc. These positions are held by members and can you with growth development, and encourage your team participation (Hughey, 2010). Research has supported that involvement has a positive relationship with student retention, student satisfaction, and student perceptions of the college experience (Abrahamowicz, 1988). Club is defined as an association of persons for some common object usually jointly supported and organization is defined as an administrative and functional structure such as an association or a society. Academic performance will be defined as of or relating to a characteristic of a school, especially one of higher learning. Hess, Kerssen-Griep, and Trees (2003) did a study that addressed important learner identity needs and predicted students intrinsic learning motivations and interaction involvement in school. The research showed that students perceptions of instructional behaviors will help sustain their involvement. They also found that the more a student is engaged in classroom activities the more the student has a motivation to learn which leads to better academic performance. Dean and Gifford (1990) examined extracurricular activity participation and achievement with ninth graders in a junior high school setting and with ninth graders in a senior high school setting. They found that the relationship of school organization, extracurricular activities,

academic performance, and attitudes toward self were all highly correlated with the ninth grade students in the junior high school setting because they were involved in more extracurricular activities than the ninth graders in the senior high school setting. Even though their study was done on ninth graders, it supports my hypothesis that the more involved you are in school the better your grades are. Hooper, Lundquist, Jackson, and Weiss (2003) did a study that examined the degree to which cognitive-motivational factors predicted academic performance in college students. They found that lower levels of procrastination and involvement during the school year contributed to an overall lower grade point average. They also mentioned that increasing time in school activities may assist in facilitating improvements in academic performance. In addition, some research suggests that the more involved you are the better your grades are because clubs and organizations tend to be a support system for individuals. The importance of getting involved in college clubs and organizations depends on the person you are measuring. Student service professionals consider involvement as an integral part of development. Research indicates that participation in college organizations and similar out of class student activities is related to increased skill development and other dimensions of personal growth (Abrahamowicz, 1988).

B. Statement of the Problem This study will be conducted to determine the impact of joining organizations to FEUEast Asia College Students. Specifically, this study seeks to answer the following questions: 1. What kind of student organization to join? 1.1. How these organization help you develop your skills and personality? 2. That they may emphasize the benefits of joining an organization and respond to the disadvantages of it that may harm the students.

Future Researchers. This study will serve as a stepping stone for the future researchers for further investigation on the advantage and disadvantages of joining student organizations. D. Scope and Delimitations This descriptive study will cover the different student organizations present in most colleges and universities. It will determine the advantage and disadvantages of being in an organization and how this organization made impact to their studies. This research also includes To know the insights and opinions of the college students, a survey will be conducted specifically to the FEU East Asia College students. The study involves all levels and courses of college students enrolled in FEU East Asia College during the first semester of academic year 2011-2012.

Chapter II Methodology

This chapter present in detail the research and design used, the survey instrument for gathering data, the description of the respondents and the data analysis. This research was conducted in order to determine the advantages and disadvantages of joining extracurricular activities to students. In order to answer these research goals, the researchers chose enrolled FEU-East Asia College students S.Y.2011-2012 who are member of organizations to obtain their view in line with this topic. A total of 30 respondents were selected randomly to answer the survey questioners. The data gathered was computed and tabulated for the result and discussion. The main goal of this research is to determine how these extracurricular activities help the students to enrich their Student Life and to gain a better grade. This study also determined how student organizations affect the personal development of students individual. The descriptive method used in this research. To describe the descriptive method, Jenny Anto states that descriptive research is also called Statistical Research. The main goal of this type of research is to describe the data and characteristics about what is being studied. The idea behind this type of research is to study frequencies, averages, and other statistical calculations. Although this research is highly accurate, it does not gather the causes behind a situation. Descriptive research is mainly done when a researcher wants to gain a better understanding of a topic. It is quantitative and uses surveys and panels and also the use of probability sampling. A total of 30 students respondents are from the enrolled college students of FEU-East Asia College S.Y.2011-2012. All of the respondents are members of a student organization, so that the survey would be accurate and not biased. The researchers searched them all over the

campus to obtain their insight if student organization would be helpful among college students in FEU-East Asia College. Choosing of the respondents are not affected by their gender, course or year level as long as they are students of FEU-East Asia College and a member an Organization whether its an academic, socio-civic, sports or government. The researcher used survey questioners for gathering data. It consisted of eight (8) questions for those students who are member of students organization. Respondents took an average of 5-7 minutes to answer the survey items. The distributed survey questioners were then gathered, and the results of the data were calculated. The researchers used tables and graph to determine how these extracurricular activities developed academic aspect and involvement of every student in the campus. The results of each question were converted into percentage by dividing the no. of votes to the total no. of votes multiplied by 100. The percentage of each questions were computed and compared to the percentage of the other.

Chapter III Results and Discussions

The second question, how many organizations did you join, most of the students answered that they have joined one organization. The third question, how does joining organization benefit you, the majority of the students answered that they benefited by meeting new friends. The fourth question, what are the activities in the organization that are you interested, the majority of students answered that they are most interested with the tutorial services of the organizations. The fifth question, do you consider joining organizations an advantage or disadvantage, all of the students answered that it is an advantage. The sixth question, what do you think are the advantages of joining organization, the majority of students answered that it gives the opportunity to be involved with campus activities. The seventh question, what do you think are the disadvantages of joining organizations, most of the students consider other factors in answering the question. And the last question, would you recommend others to join organizations, all of the students answered that they will recommend joining organizations. Based on the findings of the research, the researchers learned that the majority of the students join academic organizations. Organizations benefit students for they to meet new

friends. Among the different activities that organizations offer, students are most interested with tutorials. Students consider having an organization as an advantage for it allows them to be involved with the different campus activities. But student organizations have also its disadvantages. Students consider factors such as conflicting time schedules, money involvement,

11

and stressful activities as disadvantage of having an organization. Having a student organization is still recommended by all students for it can be helpful and give a student an advantage.

Chapter IV Summary, Conclusions and Recommendations

Summary A student organization is a group of students who have common goals and interests, embarking on joint activities in pursuit of these goals, and to meet regularly to form close bonds. Student organizations play a strategic role in molding the intellectual and civic consciousness of students. It can be a significant factor in a students satisfaction with the college experience and mostly gain valuable experiences, increases campus and community involvement, and enhances intellectual development. Active participation in an organization is beneficial because it enables student to value leadership and interpersonal skills, explore new interests and acquire knowledge. Furthermore, involvement offers students the opportunity to connect with peers, university faculty and members. This study intends to consider the advantages and disadvantages of joining on a Student Organization in Far Eastern University East Asia College. Also, to know if joining an organization helps student to be more efficient. The researchers chose 30 members from the different organizations in FEU-EAC enrolled college students of FEU-East Asia College S.Y.2011-2012 as their respondents. The selections of the respondents are not affected by their gender or year level. Survey questionnaire was the instrument used in aid of gathering information from respondents. The said survey was conducted last August 18, 2011 and the results are shown that majority of respondents agreed that it is advantageous for students in joining a school organization in FEU-EAC. Moreover, 80% of the respondents are part of the Academic type of

13

Organization, 13% answered Socio-Civic, and 3% into student government and the rest are in JPCS, Music, Technical field and others. All of the respondents would recommend others to join and participate in FEU-EAC Organizations. As such, it also showed some disadvantages when dealing with the students time frame, coping abilities and financial stability. Hence, these are just some of the pros and cons of joining and being a member of a student organization. It helps a student become much more aware in every way such as physical, emotional, intellectual and social aspects portraying ones personality.

Conclusions Given the mentioned statements of the problem in Chapter 1 and to the result of the study, the researchers were able to draw these following conclusions which were also the answers to it: 1. Out of 30 respondents, 80% are part of the Academic type of Organization, 13%

answered Socio-Civic, and 3% into student government and the rest are in JPCS, Music and Technical field. Moreover, 13% of the respondents are members of two different organizations. 1.1 Organization molds the students to develop their skills and personality

through group activities, tutorials, seminars, outside the campus programs, outreach programs and Intramurals. With these activities, a student will be able to gain and uplift what is lacking in their personality, enhance their talents, develop leadership skills and to socialize. 2. The researchers discovered that the majority of respondents agreed that it is

beneficial for students in joining a school organization in FEU-EAC. This study indicates

14

that there are numerous benefits to involvement and shows that 60% of the students who are involved receive better grades, 67% are satisfied with their college experience and are more successful in their academic program, 67% enhances their Social life and 30% said that its advantage is the Network Connections outside the University. Also, all of the respondents would recommend other students to join and participate in FEU-EAC Organizations. 3. With the great number of advantages come the disadvantages it also has. Some

disadvantages are when dealing with the students time frame, coping abilities, financial stability, etc. 43% answered that because of money involvements, 57% said that it is Time Consuming and cannot focus on their studies, 3% thinks that some members misuse their powers since they knew they have the great authority than the others and 50% of the respondents cried that it joining organizations add stress to them. 4. A student involved in an organization manages his/her time by prioritizing their

studies before turning their obligation to the organization. In such way, they can budget or allot specific time and energy to lessen hindrance and especially increase ones efficiency and productivity in accomplishing its goals and objectives throughout their involvement in the organization and coping up academically.

Recommendations After a careful study and analysis, the researchers would like to propose the following recommendations: 1. Students who are interested to join in a particular Student Organization that is

suitable for his/her quality, the researchers suggests that one should know the nature,

15

scope and be knowledgeable of the Organization to participate so as not to jeopardize ones safety. 2. This study is effective since it indicates that student should realized that there are

many advantages being a part of an organization in which student can enrich its Social, Academic, and Career Life as well. 3. However, this study also promotes the Disadvantages of joining a Student

Organization. It may require much time and effort to accomplish the necessary activities; involves money; may limit your friends; may result to dependence; may cause members abuse or maltreatment, etc. 4. Managing time is important especially if you are studying while being committed

with different kinds of involvements. The researchers recommend that one should know how to prioritize to be able to support the organization as well as cope with their studies and lessen stress related-factors. This study aims to consider the advantages and disadvantages of joining on a Student Organization. Joining a student organization is a great way for a student to get involved while at FEU-EAC. Joining gives a student the opportunity to become friends with others who have similar interests, and it is a great way to meet students in their field of interest. Hence, it is a great way to network, which is so critical to become an achiever. Taking on a leadership role within a student organization gives students the opportunity to become leaders and earn the respect of their peers and University Faculty.
